    I know this video is 5 years old but for those watching, it's highly recommended to apply RIT Dye Fixative to prevent bleeding & fading & once dry apply something like Scotchgard Water Sheild as moisture can cause dye transfer

    I've soooo been searching for a video like this. I have a 2006 Acura TL white with terrible tan interior. Ive redone the headliner using Corbeau suede material for most of the plastic pieces. Which all started by purchasing 2x Corbeau racing seats and when the dealer found out my desire to change my interior from tan to black thats when he put me on to the corbeau headliner material (though it works for plastic pieces as well.) I what i couldn't wrap I just bought off eBay (black door panels, black seatbelts, etc...) Even my rear speaker deck is wrapped. But the carpet I thought would have been easy to find. Unless it was a super expensive "donor" car or the vehicles carpet was too badly damaged it was all a failure. But seeing yours made me give more thought to just using black dye.

    Seems like a good method, but you should have washed it to see how it holds up. For anyone watching this I highly recommend you also make a spray bottle of RIT DYE COLOR STAY, as the name suggests it helps BOND the color to fabric.

      Believe you are supposed to wash it normally post dying, after its sit in the dye for long enough to stain. Thats what is done with everything else that is dyed with rit dye. Let the carpet sit for a night and then go in there with a bucket, sponge and soap and put in some hard elbow grease to get rid of the leftover dye material.
      Might take a second go through too idk.

I'm like really OCD & I know like carpet cleaners aren't good enough alone, like I mean their good, but not for really dirty stuff exp like an old used car carpet that had previous owners and stuff but OMG the pressure hose and the purple stuff and the broom scrubber thingy THEN the carpet cleaner, WOW! MY WHOLE GAME IS ABOUT TO CHANGE. Omg thank u so much, I love u ! Lol jk but this really honestly saved my life in SOOOOOOO many ways 🥰 this is amazing. Thank u(: & I also want to say thank u for showing us how to dye our carpet bcuz I've wanted black carpet in my car forever but like knew it would never happen bcuz it's too much money but this I CAN DO, like literally everything u did, I love, & the bottle I think had it had cold water around it to the top it would of worked just fine how u invisioned it, meybe like a certain size small bucket would been easier to fill higher... I'm very impressed & I love your style, I like to use rainbow colors too but wow u went way to the top ! That's way cool & lol at the end when u said about the driveway but thats really cool u pay attention to that kind of stuff(: anyways sorry I'm just hella happy I found this & learned so much from u. Did this on my 1994 Accord Wagon. If you do the same process but wash out each coat after it sits overnight with a sprayer on a regular garden hose it will wash the extra dye out and that way it wont stain other things and will keep the same texture as it did stock when done. So dye it, let sit overnight, wash off with water, dry by shop vac, redye, sit, wash, dry by shop vac, repeat until color is satisfactory when dry. When you like the color make sure its washed out well and then vacuum and dry it really well and then you'll be golden. The texture after done or being in the car for a couple days afterwards will be the exact same as stock.

    One criticism directed at DIY-ing in general (I am guilty of this as well), we talk about only spending $3 on this project, and we all feel so good about ourselves when it is all done.....BUT what about the 8 hours of OUR TIME IT TOOK, how much is the time worth?? We always forget to value our time as DIY-er's (again I am guilty of this as well).

      @Joe, At face value your statement makes sense, but upon deeper inquiry it falls flat. I make $46/hr, however, it would be foolish to believe that I would add this into my estimate as 1) I do not actually have to pay myself and do this during my free time, and 2) a shop would quantify their charge for this kind of work differently than simply take what YOU as the customer make per hour. If you were to take time off work to do this, then yes, it would make sense to compare your hourly rate to what a shop would charge as you are directly losing money from not working.

      We’ll here an unrelated but kinda related way to answer this. My fuel door release cable on my 4Runner was broken and I talked to Toyota about getting it replaced and they quoted me $750. I decided to tackle it myself, I spent $40 on the cable itself and it took me 10 hours start to finish to get it done. In the end I saved $700 and I got to learn the ins and outs of my vehicle. To me that justified the amount of time spent especially to save $700

    • @thehellbird8946
      @thehellbird8946 4 года назад

      @@meriss1901 it stays for awhile. It would probably take a couple years before you'd need to repaint it again. But this is important. Make sure you dont have armorol on your dash or components you are spraying. The paint will separate and have a issue sticking. So be sure to wash your dash down with some dawn dish soap to remove any armorol if you use it. It Is like 16$ a can from the auto store so it took me 2 cans just to do my doors and dash in my trans am. I still have to spray the plastic in the back and hatch. So I'd say 4 or 5 cans of it.

    • @thehellbird8946
      @thehellbird8946 4 года назад

      You can use armorol after it has dried to keep the dash looking slick and new but it shouldn't fade as long as your car isn't sitting in the sun all day all the time.

      @@thomastimpton6034 Nope, no reply. I finally used Duplicolor Vinyl & fabric spray and it was good on plastic parts like door panels, console, etc..., but for the carpet parts that suffer friction (eg. car's floor pan sections) it does not hold up. The good thing is that is easy to touch up, but I am still looking for a permanent solution... I also used it on vinyl seats to change the color, but after a little use, it starts to come off the cracks and you need to touch up. I am curious if the RIT dye would be better...

    • @kylerrhys8733

      If you did this for seats I would suggest using the carpet cleaner to wash the excess dye out (maybe let it set overnight first) because otherwise it’s gonna dye your clothes when you sit on it. Rit dye is meant to be rinsed out after. Kinda like when someone dyes their hair, same concept

    Hi I got a quick question have you noticed the dye come off onto your shoes or washed out like does it come out of the carpet I asked because I tried it on the a&p pillars and c pillars after I applied it I was able to rinse it all out back to its original color of tàn all the black came out but I used it straight from the bottle I didn't mix any water maybe that's where I'm doing something wrong.

    • @omgwtfmason

      if you’re coloring A pillars and such, that are plastic you’re gonna want to use a vinyl and fabric spray paint. Dupli-color makes one that’s great for car parts

    • @Givelasagna
