That sticker is the only thing they do. What I suspect (but can't prove) is that they are looking on places like Ebay for broken/damaged systems, buying them cheap, adding a sticker, calling it "refurbished", and selling for a HUGE markup.
@@gimphandjeff Another thing to keep in mind. The fact that they (so far) seem to be refunding people who buy these and get scammed, does not absolve them. What they're doing is still illegal/false advertising. Someone needs to unleash the FTC on these scammers.
Considering the age of these consoles, IMO not only should they be cleaning all the dust out but they should be replacing the thermal pad or paste under the CPU if they are going to call it "refurbished" and be charging a premium price for it.
Yeah I think that's a valid point. There's steps that should be taken to better the products purchased at the higher price point. They should last longer because of those steps and then I would be the first to say the higher price points are justified.
The N64 doesn't need thermal paste and the pad are still soft even from all these years abut a good clean is necessary also check for bad caps while you're inside too
@@xxbyron13xx Exactly! I said consoles not just N64. PS3 for example has a large heatsink on both the CPU and GPU. Both of these have thermal paste that should be replaced if they are going to call it refurbished IMO. The point is, they are not doing their due diligence. This is a very clear example of false advertising.
Ehhhh gamestop is still worse. DKoldies might over charge but the people who own gamestop are literal piles of garbage. Tho I give them credit for actually giving me 40 bucks in cash for one of my copies of NCAA 14 back in 2016. They will give you more for that game then they would if you traded in a ps4.
DKOldies needs to post photos of EVERY used item that they sell, not just stock photos. I can't imagine ever buying a used item from anyone without seeing what I'm getting. Boggles my mind that people purchase sight unseen.
Yeah I agree but can also see how that would be extremely hard for a business to track each specific listing and then make sure that exact item goes to the exact buyer for it. It would be ideal but in the end I think we'd just see videos popping up of people comparing their images to the product received and coming to the conclusion that they don't match in the end.
On my retro games store anything that is posted (even if its a repeat game or console) has its own set of photos. Its tedious as hell and I hate adding inventory but it saves me from SO much headache later. You can literally see what your paying for in incredibly high detail using a DLSR camera
Kind of reminds me. I have an intellivision in the attic. Dusty and never even turned it on. Can't remember where I got it from. Probably a local sale. Can't imagine I paid more than £10 for it. Should really get a cartridge just to see if it works.
@@WakaFIockaFlame I've been wanting to do a restoration/repair channel for a while. Did a test run a few months back but lighting was poor. We have camera equipment, including lights but daughter's bunnies are taking up half the side of my end of the living room, so nowhere to set them up at the minute. I have something like four Atari 800XLs that need repairing, as well as my old Vectrex that finally died on me 10+ years ago. We never throw things away so plenty of stuff for a channel around here. Another idea I have is to open up old toys and electronic games and see if it's possible to make one myself. My parents still have my TCR (jam car broke a week after I got it - plastic spindle wore down but I now have a 3D printer), my TomyTronic 3D and I have my Firefox F7. I once found a Battlestar Galactica electronic game in my wife's attic after we met that just needed some internal cleaning but I gave it away to someone on the AtariAge forum. That would have been a nice, easy one to start with.
@@daviddavies3637 well look here man im gonna subscribe to you right now and make sure you let me know when you start recording things like that because i could get lost watching that content. very excited to see it.
The thing that sucks is that DKOldies and company's like it are most likely buying or trying to buy out all the actually properly priced old stuff/old consoles and they just straight up reselling it for x3-x10 its worth trying to make it seem like its some sort of rich people thing/"collectors" item.
They do buy on eBay I know that first hand now which is actually an interesting story but I'm too respectful of people and their privacy for a content creator sometimes so I don't air out everything I know first hand.
I think my favorite thing that came out of people exposing DKOldies, is their response video of them showing everyone how they refurbish their consoles… and they are improperly cleaning it
Using those shitty little blowers that are more weak than a frigging cpu fan and using a bristle vacuum attachment to help brush the dirt further inside.
The reason people call it a scam is actually not because of the prices, because if it was just prices, people would hate it but not to this extend. People call it a scam because if you just look online, it's actually possible to find quite a few DKOldies customers receiving either not working products or like what the RUclipsrs covering DKOldies have shown, not cleaned or refurbished items, even though they advertised it as so.
Yeah if they were just ((overcharging)) They'd just be price gouging. The Scam comes from when they say the reason why you are paying that 2-3x retail premium because they thoroughly cleaned and tested the item. But they don't , That's the Scam.
@@Darkstar-rg8ze I've been aboard this Trainwreck for a while now, even had a laugh with some friends on discord over it... I still recon the site from time to time
Yeah technically what there doing is a crime its illegal its called false advertising not to add in 2020 most stores that where price gauging during the pandemic got shut down by the federal government for over charging to profit during a pandemic this store clearly never suffered that outcome as there still up and yes some stores seen a pandemic and thought let me raise the price of everything in my store food supplies entertainment everything the fact so many places did this was absolutely disgusting 🤦
I'm still happy I found a N64 in a charity shop for £7, with a couple of games, needed a little clean but it wasn't that bad. Best bargain ever, always check charity shops first for a retro bargain.
Agreed uk charity shops are amazing for console finds. I am finding alot of charity shops have now been told to ebay the price of stuff tho, so I am seeing the likes of single snes games for like 40pound in charity shops etc and that isn't on..
Unfortunatetly in australia the charities all charge more than normal going price. Quite often %50+ more, and consoles are hijacked by the workers or management.
Since you took the top off, you had to remove the jumper pak. I wouldn't be surprised if some dust made its way into the jumper pak slot, which would cause the issue you're having. I'd recommend cleaning the jumper pak slot and trying again if you still have the console.
This. Had to look at 20 comments till I found this one. I refurbish n64s all the time, it's normal for them not to post after you've taken the cover off. The expansion pak needs placed in just right, reason they have tape on them from the factory. Little compressed air, and seat it correctly and it should run. He should have tested it before.
There is an eBay seller in the UK who's been doing this for years. Buying stuff from eBay and then selling them at inflated prices. Difference is that he really does seem to refurbish everything he sells. I wouldn't buy anything at these prices but I get why people might. Not everyone has the time, confidence and inclination to do the work themselves.
Also some how they are smack 1st on any retro game store search it only proves there buyers are people who dont actually look for anything beyond there 1st google search there clearly just lazy 🤦
Sucks I felt the same way too. Then I just came to the conclusion that the only refurbishing they do is essentially exterior cleaning (if at all). Just support your local shops if you can.
Except for there videos probably the only time they do cleaning basically when the cameras are on its pretty much a sales tactic give the illusion for the idiots then sell the real deal when the cameras go off willing to bet the true stuff they repair never leaves that shop and is only used when the camera turn on 😂
so i actually had the same general opinion as you about them, bought a dsi in cosmetically good condition, got one with a bashed-in shoulder button thatd get stuck. and then a surge of videos about them are coming out just a few weeks after. i really hope they start taking all the criticism into consideration and up their QA
They really aren't. They are simply deleting comments on people calling them out on their "refurbished consoles" and pretending nothing is wrong. While also making videos of them "reading" customer reviews (fake reviews made by them) When it's just more advertising. The only thing they are doing is damage control, while pretending nothing is wrong.
What dude said above me I sent a few questions on the subject there way was deleted with in seconds meanwhile some are just straight up ignored all together they are flat out ignoring everyone and honestly that just makes them look even worse
Great video! It's sad to see how a beat up nasty Goodwill $30 special works just fine but a $119 "Premium Refurbished" N64 doesn't work at all. Wild stuff!
it amazes me the amount of videos i've been seeing the past few weeks about their consoles being poorly refurbished or not refurbished at all. I wonder how they will address these problems.
Edit:I didn’t get to the point in the video where the console just doesn’t work 😂 - what a disaster I think the thing that’s really surprising is just how dirty the consoles are and the fact that they generally work. It doesn’t take much time at all to take these consoles apart and just quickly dust all this funk out - what takes a lot more time is repairing consoles that don’t work/repair etc. If it was just the fact the consoles were overpriced, but still were nicely refurbished it wouldn’t be much of an issue - but paying a premium for these consoles and getting stuff like crappy third party accessories and finding them not even being cleaned on a basic level is absurd. At that point, you mine as well just buy off eBay or at a garage sale.
I got a used game at GameStop last week for about 30% of the DK Oldies price. Spent $25 on PS3 Spider-Man: Web of Shadows CIB. DK wants $99 for the disc only 🤡
Wow! Shitty! I still have my original N64 that I passed out to my mother for all the grandkids that would visit. She’s passed now and I have it back. Still works like new and i always keep it clean.
Still watching so apologies if this doesn't end up being relevant: the Nintendo AV cable used from SNES thru GameCube has Composite, S-Video *and* RGB pins. I've definitely had consoles where composite worked fine but the other modes did not because those pins were dirty or corroded. I wouldn't be surprised if stores don't check all three. PS: not all Nintendo consoles that used this connector supported RGB or S-Video. US and JP N64 and GCN do support S-Video at least. However they all support composite and the composite cables are completely interchangeable *if it's for the same region.* US and Japan use the same cables but they're different from European cables despite using the same connector.
I remember a few years ago I was looking for some old systems to just relive some of my childhood, and I eventually came across DKOldies, I never bought from them but I also never realized how high their prices were compared to places like marketplace or Ebay. I wouldn't say they're a scam, I'd say they're more of a ripoff. Some of their games are relatively priced okay-ish but their console bundles and consoles, for the quality they're selling is just not worth it at all, especially when they claim to refurbish the consoles but can't even take 5 minutes to get all or at least some of the dust out.
I only like to buy these things in person. Like i’ll google a retro store, drive there, and see what they got. If I don’t like the quality or price, I take my money somewhere else. I’m not the biggest online shopper at times. Only if it’s like a single game im looking for.
That's a good way to go but there's risk there too as usually in person you aren't able to test it so you're still putting trust in someone's hands. That's how it goes though any route you take.
I don't think it's bad for them to do that, because they don't know if you'll open it up and screw something up and then ask for a refund. Clearly slapping the sticker on without really fixing anything inside is not cool though.
@@Return_To_Sender Oh, I think they're annoying, but I also guess plenty of people who don't know what they're doing open the console up and screw everything up themselves.
About 9 months ago my son was super excited to receive his "newly refurbished" WII U in the post. He had been saving up for awhile, and even though I thought it was a bit overpriced I figured I didn't know much about the retro hardware market, so I figured it was legit. My retro goes as far as MAME and RetroPi :) - but I get it. You grow up with these things and they have special meaning. For me that was the arcade in the 80s, but I digress. Anyway, he gets it home and for some reason he wasn't super excited. He didn't want to show me the system, but I talked him into it, and I immediately knew he got ripped off. I didn't say anything at the time - I didn't want to rain on his parade - but my thinking was in the future maybe I'll give him some better advice. At any rate, fast forward 9 months and suddenly everyone is talking about the DKOldies scam. I innocently inquired if that system he bought came from DKOldies. He sheepishly said yes, so he probably already figured out he got ripped off. I left it at that - he learned his lesson and no need to rub salt in the wounds. At least it worked - for $350 it better work - but it was dirty, the controls were sticky, and overall it just looked like crap. Definitely not refurbished. I used to work in the refurbish department for a company I worked for in the 90s - in fact I started the department since we kept getting stuff returned from the field for one thing or another. My gear didn't go out of there unless it looked as good as new, if not better :D. I took pride in my refurbishing. Apparently DKOldies takes pride in ripping people off.
What an awful experience. With me I heard the talks of them not being a scam and initially thought that it couldn't be 100% true due to their longevity in the space but I was obviously very wrong. It's worse when someone like your son gets screwed over who saved up and didn't expect even the remote possibility of this being the reality of things.
@@OfficialChaseBrogan yeah, I never felt the desire to "get back" at DKOldies. There are scammers in this world, and there is nothing you can do about it but be aware. Do your research. That is something that I lectured him on a bit - I will admit. I am also going to help him save up for a PS5. I'm not going to outright buy it, since he wouldn't learn a lesson that way, but I will help him save. I told him it will be like a 401k and I will match 50% of what he puts in ;).
I bought a Xbox 360 that didn’t even work at all from them. I also bought a gameboy advance sp and the screen was broken and had a weird color. This was when I first started buying older games, sadly I wish I knew that they were basically scammers because I would have never bought anything from them.
I ordered a gameboy color from them that was supposed to be a "clean version console" it showed up with scratches and dents and the battery cover was a different color. Tried 3 different sets of batteries and wouldnt turn on. They did replace it but I wont use them again.
They always look bad inside because if you look at their refurb videos they don't actually open the inside of the consoles while cleaning. The guy doing the repairs just opens it, does a crappy job repairing whatever, puts it back together, and then it goes to the cleaning department where they don't take anything apart which imo is really funny.
@@OfficialChaseBrogan Yeah, they do have gamecube video that's more for show but if you look up dk oldies ps2 refurb you'll see what I'm talking about. It's a short btw
Of course they will ship priority mail, because they absolutely hose everyone who buys their stuff for the excruciatingly painful high prices. It hurts just looking at their prices
Just for my curiosity did you check the RAM expansion port to see if the jumper was in there. I wouldn't be surprised if they purchased that N64 with RAM expansion which they removed to sell separately, but no one put a jumper in the port.
holy crap. i've had an N64 since the 90s.... and it still works. I've never even considered opening it to clean. It is kinda hard for me to believe they didn't at least turn the console on before shipping with all the employees they have though.
@@pietrosmusi5250 2 weeks later and I’ve seen the 4 RUclipsrs and what suck is because of DKs prices the local stores where I live want to charge ridiculous prices as well. It’s crazy
Not defending them by saying this, but my guess is that either 1. They don't actually refurbish them like they say they do or 2. They do "refurbished" them, but they go through so many of them that they put them on a big shelf along with many others that they claimed to be working and when someone wants to buy one, they just go to that pile and pick one up, don't check or test it again to make sure that things are still working as they should and wrap it up and ship it out. While it is sitting on that stack of others, new dust builds up and gets into the console. Could be the warehouse they do this stuff in could be cold or where they store the consoles. Cold weather is not good for these consoles, they are designed to be house temp weather and putting them in places that aren't like that and keeping them there for a while could cause damage later. I personally do think it's #1. I don't think they are really taking the time to refurbish them. ReviewTechUSA made a video of the owner talking about how he started DKO and the way he talked sounded scummy and not knowing much about how games and consoles worked. He was and still is doing this just to make a quick extra bucks and I am sure he doesn't give a rats ass about this customers as he is a scalper ((he even says he bought older NES games for cheap and flipped them on Ebay)) and he knows that people are going to buy the stuff regardless of what others say because there will always be another person who is going to give them money because they could be uneducated about this stuff. What I think DKO needs right now other than being exposed which the great people making these videos are doing is have a stronger competitor who will take the time to do the refurbish and drive them out of business.
I noticed the jumper pack you have looks aftermarket. Maybe that’s the issue. I would use the pack in your goodwill one on the DKoldies one and see if that’s the issue.
Should have switched that to see but in the end that's not what I paid a premium price to have to do and the average person wouldn't be able to do that as you wouldn't be buying a console you have already in the first place. I already did too much work for the price I paid.
Tell me if I'm wrong, but the expansion upgrade was so common that to me you almost would have to go out of your way to not have a 64 with expansion pack. A lot of these retro sellers charge for the expansion.
Jumper Pak was the common one and needed to get the console going. Expansion Pak was extra and used for a small amount of games. It was needed to play Perfect Dark single player. You needed it to play Donkey Kong 64 and that's why it was sold with every copy
The fact that DKoldies channel presents it self as clean cut with old school professionals is just off putting when you see the polar opposite in reality everywhere else on the internet.
Sucks for sure. I have no issue with their video content except when its blatantly misleading people to place orders for items in a different condition than what is advertised. Their regular content beyond that though is good and Joey seems like a good guy who I'm sure since he isn't in fact the owner has little or nothing at all to do with the real issues behind the scenes. If they aren't going to do what they say they are doing to these consoles they should invest their time purely in video content. They have the audience to make and they already do make an absolute fortune from video content. It's jaw dropping what their numbers are. Look them up on socialblade. You can see what youtube channels make per month/year. The numbers aren't 100% on point but they aren't far off. I'm on there too and I can say their range is accurate. The high end is a bit high but not by much. Well within the ballpark.
I also thought they have just been getting drug through the mud by everybody. It seems like you gave them a pretty fair shot and wound up with a nonworking console and potentially some mid 90s dust. Wow..
Yeah I definitely did. You can see how I kicked the video off still positive with them thinking this was going to be functional and I was going to prove a point 😂. I proved a point but not the one I thought I would.
I hope you get your refund, concerned that they may say that it worked before you broke their tamper seal and disassembled it. I think that is why they put that sticker over the last screw hole. On a positive, that 30$ Goodwill find is the video MVP.
yeah, I wish my goodwills put out retro stuff. In my area it all hits ebay for some % under pricecharting prices. I like doing business w goodwill, they ship cheap and the stuff is usually described well regarding condition. I trust their stock photos and description a lot more than other peoples'
@@penguinjay Check goodwill store website. There are INSANE deals on there and you can find local stores too. I would search the stores closest to me because they keep the good stuff for their website auctions. They wouldn't have anything because it was all in the back being sold online in auctions. You can arrange local pick up though.
(note! I am not a lawyer) The nice thing is that because they're in the US, those warranty void stickers are not legally enforceable so even though he opened it, he will still be able to get a refund.
@@Crono1973 yeah you're right, my bad, but at the very least they can't deny warranty service for the stickers being damaged, which hopefully (although probably not) includes refunds for a broken/defective product. If it was me though I'd see if I could issue a chargeback and get my money back.
5:20 Jesus Christ. It seems like they didn't even include the original N64 Jumper Pak and replaced it with an aftermarket one. ...Which is fine for this _one instance,_ since the Jumper Pak isn't much more than a PCB with electrical contacts and traces, but it shows their habit of stripping _anything of value_ that can be sold separately and replacing them with cheap jank when it DOES matter, such as controllers and power supplies, whenever they can.
Probably should have tested it before you opened it up (this is what all the other channels do). Because you didn't test it before opening it, even though you clearly didn't do anything, they could argue that it was working when they shipped it and you broke it by opening it. I hope you still get your refund, but in the future it might be something to keep in mind. Test first, then open.
That would actually be illegal in the United States. Even the "warranty sticker" means jack shit because of the laws protecting consumers. They offer a warranty and sent a broken product by law they have to oblige the warranty.
Nice job with the video! I picked up 2 retro fighter controllers when I purchased my everdrive cart. Picked up a retrotink 2x pro for Christmas and love how it makes the games sharper for newer tvs
$190? That’s insane. I’ve bought mine for $45, that’s what they age going for. Condition is pretty much the same as the one in the video and it came with all of the cables and with a third party controller
@@OfficialChaseBrogan ultimately, they’re really just screwing themselves over. People will demand refunds and DK will be out of pocket on each purchase. Really doesn’t make sense to me
@@rickdiculous420 I think you need to lookup the definition of the word "scam". They are advertising it as "refurbished" and this clearly isn't. It's full of dust and doesn't even work.
Cool intro! The riff sounds like ''school'' from nirvana. I have to say I really don't like how they put the sticker over the screw cause they're kinda subtly saying that they don't want you to open it and it seems like it's because they don't open it and clean it themselves. Total BS that it didn't even work either. Good on you for giving them a chance and being fair and unbiased in the video. Got a sub from me.
Thanks! The best part of that is their warranty is voided if you remove that sticker. I understand if that's the case from the manufacturer but when buying from a reseller that's literally the only way to know if they did what they advertised and yes it's so similar to school that's what drew me to it!
warranty void stickers are technically illegal due to 1975 Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. Problem is not a lot know about it and don't want to pursue legal action or not worth the time for it
Yep which is very interesting when you think about it right. The only way to verify that what they sent you was in fact in the condition that was advertised is to void the warranty protecting you. That's insane isn't it? That being said they approved my request for return with a prepaid shipping label minutes after I sent my email to them where I mentioned that I did open it up. That doesn't mean they don't fight me in a couple days though. We'll see how it plays out.
I was in the same place as you, with my opinion of them. I had bought games from them before and the experience was good. I just assumed that some people were lying or exaggerating their negative experiences with them. So I decided to buy an OG Xbox from them, and was super disappointed when it arrived. First thing I noticed was that it wasn’t sitting level because they didn’t replace a missing rubber foot in one corner. Then, after I powered it on, the disc tray wouldn’t open. I don’t see how that could be missed in “testing” unless something happened during shipping. However, I am pretty sure the disc tray usually fails as a result of dust buildup around the rubber gasket and cogs, meaning they probably didn’t clean the thing. I processed and exchange to see what kind of condition the replacement console will be in, to see if they at least thoroughly clean and send a good condition console that works when somebody complains and has an issue. We shall see when I get the replacement, but I’m not hopeful and that sucks. My feeling now has shifted and I only feel comfortable getting games from them, but I likely won’t in the future after this experience.
Hopefully the new one comes in better shape since you've shown them you know what to look for. The disc gray is the most noticeable issue with those. Usually dust or just wear in the belt which stretches over time. I used to work on original Xbox consoles a lot myself so I'm very familiar with that console. If it's advertised as refurbished flip it over and check if it's been opened. You should see two screw heads that were popped open through the back labels if not they could have used a heat gun to get the label pulled back but that's work and well I'd be surprised to see them go that route. Even when doing it that way you can usually tell if it's been peeled back. That's a good thing you want to be able to see if it has been opened at any point in time. Belts can be changed without opening but "refurbished" means opened and cleaned. You also should have had the capacitor issue resolved as original Xbox consoles are essentially ticking time bombs and should never be left unattended this many years removed from their manufacture date. Check this video to see what the deal is with those. ruclips.net/video/gohQqS6H8J4/видео.html
Thanks for the advice! I’ll have to check all those out when it arrives. I am going to have to open it up regardless to check the capacitor, issue and if that isn’t resolved (and to be honest I’m pretty skeptical right now that they did anything in there) I’m going to just return it and get a refund and look for an actual refurbished console.
Update: The new console they sent me works well thankfully. I don’t want to open it up and cause a problem because I’m not very knowledgeable, but I did email them to ask if they deal with the clock capacitors. They responded by saying that the refurbishing team does deal with that problem on all Xbox’s, so I’m gonna save that email in case they actually didn’t deal with it. My Xbox doesn’t ask for the time every time I boot up, so they obviously didn’t remove it entirely. Is it possible they replaced it with one that won’t rupture or is there a version of the console that doesn’t have that problem?
I'm confused why you made a comment saying you'd "get crap" for using the Brawler64? It's literally one of the best controllers ever made for N64 and far superior to the original in feel and functionality. Anyone who's saying those are crap has either never used one, or is someone trying to pretend like the original controller is something good when it's not.
I did a video a while back with it and I got a ton of people talking crap about how it wasn't the original controller and how nobody from that generation would ever use anything but an original so I anticipated some more stupid comments. I'm of that generation and hated the original controller since I was a kid. Pleasantly surprised how many people are brawler fans. It's a phenomenal controller with excellent functionality.
That's also why they had the bright idea to place DKOldies sticker over one screw area to have many leave it on so they can return it without noticing they refurbished nothing
Yeah I can agree with that. Is this all intentional and a shady business practice or is there a major disconnect from owner/managers to the employees who are suppose to be doing the refurbishing. That's the question I wonder in the end. The end result is bad either way to the customers and you would think could be easily corrected if it in fact employees not doing their job or following the proper procedures.
The stickers are to me the most interesting part of this whole mess. The sticker removal technically voids the warranty BUT that is the only way to actually find out if what you purchased was actually in the condition that was advertised. For those that do want to open it up to check and maybe aren't as knowledgeable on how to do so...they could remove all the screws and find that the console doesn't open and then say forget it without realizing there is even a screw under that sticker. I know how to open these and I initially overlooked that the sticker was covering the last one up. Figured it out fast but again I'm a little more used to these than maybe the average consumer. I think a lot of thought went into those stickers and it seems sketchy across the board. I'm interested to see if I get a hard time from them about the sticker being removed with my return.
@@OfficialChaseBrogan The stickers can stay the major issue is the trust with them, If they did refurbish all consoles and placed it over a screw I wouldn't have any feelings on it but givin how many took that sticker off to find issues and dirty consoles in the inside is a bad look and this is my hot take but if that's on a recording it should be allowed to be returned to them it's good some aren't playing fair with it and looking inside anyways it's very shady
When I open up my consoles or working on them I test every variable like recently I soldered in LED lights into my original xbox controller ports for a friend I tested if it turned on are the lights stable and if the ports work as intended this is what companies should be doing

The only mistake you made is the most crucial one, but you should have probably tested it first before opening it up, because now they have a valid reason to not accept your return and refund you.
Agreed but they accepted it within minutes of me sending my email return request. I detailed that I did open it up and everything too. I def should have gone the opposite order tho you are 100% right. I didn't expect it to not work. What's interesting though and food for thought. The policy is you can't remove that sticker right? If you do the warranty is voided and you can't return your item per their policy (they obv make exceptions) but the only way the customer can verify that the product was delivered in the condition that was advertised is to remove that sticker and look inside.
@@OfficialChaseBrogan Great that they did for you man, otherwise it would look real bad for them. I noticed that your expansion bay was empty I cleaned mine and swapped the shell and forgot to put the pack on mine and would not turn on I noticed that once I put Ether the expansion pack or original pack it worked. As far as my understanding goes the 64 won't work without a jumper pack or expansion pack. It was an easy fix but I guess getting your money back works too
Great video, and I like your very logical approach to DKoldies' controversy & discussion. I imagine someone has said this already, but the only thing I would recommend is that you test the console before you open it. Not implying you might have damaged something, but it can happen with hardware you open, especially if it's old and/or during the cleaning process something could get damaged. I, though, firmly believe you more than likely received a defective console as that is more likely in this situation. Just a thought, though! Great content!
Thanks snd I totally agree with you. I initially had no plan to power it on as my focus was on whether it had been opened and refurbished previously. Then I realized I had that cable with the multi console connections on it right by me so I gave it a try. You are totally right though.
You have a good mentality when it comes to criticism of others. Keep that, we need more hope and positivity, even though in this case it so happened that the experiment proved negative. Well done.
no defending anyone here but fun little fact, dust is actually conductive and will short out components there is good chance that if you disassemble it fully and fully clean it, it would work. my custom pc i built a few years back was really dusty and wouldnt post. i blew it out completely and dusted that fan, ya know pc maintenance stuff plugged it all back in and it booted right up without an issue. dust will temporarily disable a system. no im not claiming you should have to do any of that above. im simply explaining more than likely why it didnt work.
Very good point to make. I believe the issue was that they sent this with a 3rd party pak in the console which I think was defective which would explain why the console acted as if nothing was inserted in there to begin with. Could also be the dust though. Definitely not ruling that out.
@@OfficialChaseBrogan thats a very safe bet, ive never owned an n64, always played my cousins when i was growing up so i have no clue how it acts without a pak in it.
01:39 if they claim their consoles are 100% refurbished and they're not 100% refurbished how is that not a scam? if you're promising something in return for a sale and you don't deliver the promise (in more than one occurrence.) that's the definition of a scam.
"Refurbishment" tends to have a pretty consistent definition. What they're doing, which seems to be nothing, doesn't even approach that. These should be opened and cleaned at least minimally, dusting takes little effort. Maximally they should be replacing thermal paste and checking for blown capacitors, and cleaning cartridge connector pins.
I believe that is def the issue as to why it wouldn't work. It was 3rd party so if it's faulty it makes it as if nothing is even inserted into the console.
The thing is the fact that they sell the consoles really overpriced, and that you spend US$90 (usually this on the case of N64 console only with no cables, no controllers and no games) or more and they send you something that wasn't refurbished and even worse that doesn't even works at all, that's why we can call it a big scam with all the letters. Scam isn't just when you buy something and the seller doesn't sends anything and you lose your money, a scam can also be that a seller says that the product he or she is selling works and when you get it in your home and try to use it you find it doesn't works at all. In DK Oldies's case they say they refurbish the consoles they sale, but truth is that they don't do it at all, and on top of that you can end getting a non working console. I'm surprised consumer protection didn't pay them a visit yet.
DKO has two options as far as I can tell. 1: Bring in an independent party to run QA, preferably a team of people who are experts at cleaning, refurbishing, testing, and, ya know, assuring the quality of the product. Suspend sales and operations for 24-48 hours and do a complete sweep of all inventory. That's power on, test, and clean., and test again. Once enough head start product has been verified, resume operations and continue the sweep until all products are properly verified. This process continues indefinately as new product comes in. 2: Cut prices at least 30%, stop calling them refurbished, call them used, and place a disclaimer on the page warning customers of a higher than 0% chance their console/peripheral/game WILL NOT be cleaned, and may not be fully functional, and that case the return process is quick, easy, intuitive, and... actually you know what? DKO needs to just test the fucking consoles. It's not hard. Comparisons have been made to Game$top, but seriously guys that's the lowest possible bar and DKO just headbutts the damn thing.
Agree with all your statements here. It's a very easy problem to correct. I hope it's not intentional deception where they bank on the consumer not opening the console and checking on them which I will say "voids" their warranty if you check by opening this up. They accepted my return so they aren't sticklers for this policy violation but it's in place and would deter the average person from opening the console. So of it worked people would just use it and never think twice I think. I hope the issue is just poor management of policies checks and employees that way it could be easily fixed in the way you've outlined already.
I very much admire the fact that you didn't just hop on board the hate train. You made sure to buy from them yourself before judging, and you proved that you are a real man by admitting you were wrong. The sticker is suppose to confirm that it's been cleaned and refurbished, and it's basically their seal of quality. It's sad to see a business that's been around for nearly 2 decades stoop so low. I have to wonder if this is how they've always been or if this is a more recent thing. If this wasn't the way it was when they started, then when did it all change and why? Anyway, I'll definitely be watching part 2 of this. I'm very curious to see how this ended for you.
Thanks for the very kind words! Part 2 is out already on this. Not sure on if this was always their process and now people are catching on or if there was a change at some point. Definitely unfortunate to see as I would like to say a reliable retro game store exists but that's not the case here at least.
They put a warranty sticker over a screw to keep people from opening the console and seeing that they actually didn't refurbish anything. Wild stuff.
Yeah there's a lot of thought that goes into that one little sticker
@@OfficialChaseBrogan I've seen quite a few youtubers and even people I know have had this problem with the "refurbished" consoles
That sticker is the only thing they do. What I suspect (but can't prove) is that they are looking on places like Ebay for broken/damaged systems, buying them cheap, adding a sticker, calling it "refurbished", and selling for a HUGE markup.
Yup. And it's illegal to do so according to the FTC.
The N64 doesn't need thermal paste and the pad are still soft even from all these years abut a good clean is necessary also check for bad caps while you're inside too
@@MrAlan1828 "consoles"
They don't get hot enough to really need that. A lot of these old consoles don't even have/need cooling on the processors, let alone thermal paste.

GameStop is just a funko pop store that sells some games and accessories. The one near me has Gachaball machines a-la Japan.

If only we had those in my country; you either pay premium or you don't get said console...
With those prices , knew it was a scam from the beginning lol
IF they are actually repairing and properly refurbushing things, that is fine. As long as they advertise what they are actually doing.

I’m loving these videos, all the RUclipsrs coming out the shadows exposing some of the bad work ethics of this company.
Edit:I didn’t get to the point in the video where the console just doesn’t work 😂 - what a disaster
I think the thing that’s really surprising is just how dirty the consoles are and the fact that they generally work.

What makes it even worse is the little amount of work it takes to actually clean and refurbish older systems especially for what they're charging
That is pretty despicable. Thank you for sharing this. I will absolutely be avoiding DK.
Yeah it definitely is despicable! Disrespectful too, I mean these old consoles mean a lot to a lot of us and they're just disrespecting em like this🤦
I remember a few years ago I was looking for some old systems to just relive some of my childhood, and I eventually came across DKOldies, I never bought from them but I also never realized how high their prices were compared to places like marketplace or Ebay. I wouldn't say they're a scam, I'd say they're more of a ripoff. Some of their games are relatively priced okay-ish but their console bundles and consoles, for the quality they're selling is just not worth it at all, especially when they claim to refurbish the consoles but can't even take 5 minutes to get all or at least some of the dust out.
no its a scam bc they are lying to their costumers by telling them they clean the consoles while doing absolutely nothing to them lol

DKOLDIES providing their usual level of expertise, and people actually buy this crap!
Tell me if I'm wrong, but the expansion upgrade was so common that to me you almost would have to go out of your way to not have a 64 with expansion pack. A lot of these retro sellers charge for the expansion.
You are wrong. It wasn't that common.
Actually the Expansion Pak is NOT common
Jumper Pak was the common one and needed to get the console going. Expansion Pak was extra and used for a small amount of games. It was needed to play Perfect Dark single player. You needed it to play Donkey Kong 64 and that's why it was sold with every copy
I had an N64 from the beginning and never had an expansion pak.
They also delete any constructive feedback on their social media
When he panned up on the goodwill N64 I belly laughed. He was talking so much shit on the goodwill one and it just fired up
I also thought they have just been getting drug through the mud by everybody.
Best retro gaming channel on RUclips 👍
Very kind of you!! Appreciate that!
Makes ya wonder if this stuff should all be cleaned in a ultrasonic cleaner if they wanna sell it for such a premium....
The one I went to locally never had anything and then I went online and found out that same location was a hub for their online market. They wouldn't have anything because it was all in the back being sold online in auctions. You can arrange local pick up though.
(note! I am not a lawyer) The nice thing is that because they're in the US, those warranty void stickers are not legally enforceable so even though he opened it, he will still be able to get a refund.
@@PaulTheFox1988 Refunds aren't legally enforceable either though.
Yep! Take what you can for up charges elsewhere
Definitely agree with you
That would actually be illegal in the United States.
Yeah those are both great!
$190? That’s insane.
I’ve bought mine for $45, that’s what they age going for. Condition is pretty much the same as the one in the video and it came with all of the cables and with a third party controller
Dude even my local retro store is selling a special edition jungle green n64 with a oem expansion pack for 160 and some people think that's excessive
$119*
Bonkers that that’s 2 videos of N64’s from DK Oldies on YT with exactly the same issue. 1 is bad enough, 2 is unforgivable.
Earned a sub btw ❤
Thanks for the support. Yeah it just continues it seems.
@@OfficialChaseBrogan ultimately, they’re really just screwing themselves over. People will demand refunds and DK will be out of pocket on each purchase. Really doesn’t make sense to me
I mean they are just taking trade-ins, claiming fraudulent refurb, and tripling the price. If that's not a scam, idk what is.
You need to look up the definition of scam they are fulfilling the orders with the product a scam is straight stealing and ripping off people
@@rickdiculous420 I think you need to lookup the definition of the word "scam".
I understand if that's the case from the manufacturer but when buying from a reseller that's literally the only way to know if they did what they advertised and yes it's so similar to school that's what drew me to it!
apparently from what I've heard removing the DK Oldies sticker or damaging it, voids the warranty...
warranty void stickers are technically illegal due to 1975 Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.
@@OfficialChaseBrogan spot-on
I was in the same place as you, with my opinion of them.
You should have tested it before opening it up. That way they can't claim that you messed up when you opened it.
exactly what I was thinking
Scam - a fraudulent or deceptive act or operation .
They aren't refurbishing their consoles like they claim , I think it qualifies .

Was the jumper pack/memory expander plugged in the front port? The n64 doesnt work if they are not plugged in as the jumper pack terminates the RAMBUS in the absence of the Expansion Pak. If its missing or not connecting properly then it wont turn on.
Seems like the DKoldies warranty sticker on the bottom is the only reason that makes their consoles refurbished and overpriced hahaha.
I still wonder how this is happening though, since you are not the only RUclipsr who uncovered this. Really eagerly waiting to see how this is going to end, and the whole backstory.
@Retro Gaming Guy That does make sense in that regard! Thank you for replying, and I am glad you agree! Keep up the great content!!
Hey man you tried to be positive and give them the benefit and admitted you were wrong that's cool. Props
Much appreciated
DK oldies refurbished consoles = We took a Mr. Clean sponge to the outside of the console
"And since your order got picked to be filmed, I'm throwing in this half eaten turkey sandwich I didn't finish because we don't care about you"
They should change their name to DKTrolldies
Have 2 systems in my cart n decided to look at reviews n I’m finding a lot of vids like yours. Definitely will find another place
Thank God.
I really don't want to see people give them any more $.
Their company needs to fail
You dodged a total disaster. They sell consoles for hundreds of dollars more than the going rate. You saved yourself hundreds of dollars.
Is it ironic 4 hours ago DKoldies puts up a refurbished console video on there page. I say not!
Nope just like them packaging up a n64 console right after my n64 video. They want to discredit honest reviews over accepting any wrongdoing
DK stands for Dust Kollector lol 😂
This is the third video I saw where a youtuber gets ripped off from DKOldies.
01:39 if they claim their consoles are 100% refurbished and they're not 100% refurbished how is that not a scam?
if you're promising something in return for a sale and you don't deliver the promise (in more than one occurrence.)
that's the definition of a scam.
I didn't clean my N64 in over 18 years since I owned it since 99, that has to be atleast 3-4years of shelf dust
Good on you for correcting the previous review
That "oh hell no" was funny af
Appreciate you being able to admit you were wrong, that's refreshing these days.
3rd party jumper pack. Curious....
Those are notoriously finicky.
I believe that is def the issue as to why it wouldn't work. It was 3rd party so if it's faulty it makes it as if nothing is even inserted into the console.
The sigh at about 11:30 is the sigh we all have when we are frustrated with gaming consoles lol
$119! You can pick up an N64, all cables and a controller, in the UK for £50.
I hope the issue is just poor management of policies checks and employees that way it could be easily fixed in the way you've outlined already.
what was previou video that links to this one .my frav console and goldneye

Seeing more and more of these videos. I will steer clear going forward. Thank you.

Yeah they should be checking. Refurbished is always a joke with most companies.
