  • CAMPSITE RULES ARE THERE FOR A REASON. Unfortunately we heard of a fire on a caravan site recently, this was caused due to someone not listening to the caravan site rules.
This week we have some caravan tips and some very important advice regarding camp site safety.
We look through some used caravans and motorhomes for sale. We have a nice selection of caravans for sale at our Stafford caravans site and also our Wolverhampton caravans for sale site.
We are a caravan dealer selling used touring caravans, this week we have tips and advice for everyone not just caravan newbies. Beginning caravanning. For all our used caravans for sale and used motorhomes for sale visit our website:

That's excellent advice mate. As a firefighter, I've seen a few such instances. Uncoil the whole cable. The heat that can be generated is , and has been, fatal. Keep up the good work.

Good to remind people about the need to uncoil extension leads, i’ve seen a few melted cables over the years and it’s scary. However, that has nothing to do with daft site rules regarding car charging. Plugging an EV into an electrical socket with it’s granny lead and setting the charge rate to 8 amps, for example, means the car will draw 8 amps of exactly the same type of electricity as a 2kW heating system in the caravan, or a 2kW kettle, toaster or awning heater. There seems to be this bizarre belief amongst many that the electricity an EV uses to charge is somehow different, and particularly dangerous….
If a site makes rules are that are clearly unjustifiable - “you can use this 240V electrical device but you can’t use this other 240V electrical device” - then those rules will be broken. We just stick to C&MH and C&CC sites - they provide a special type of electricity that can be used safely for anything, including charging our EV.
It’s pretty clear that the real reason commercial sites don’t like it is because they’re scared it’ll screw up their business model - which is completely understandable. So install meters and charge us for what we use. It’s fair and it has an added benefit of getting people to think about the energy they’re using.

I learnt this in my 1st year as an apprentice plumber at 16 years of age.i still find it unbelievable that people still leave any cable rolled up,even more so when they tuck it under the van

Hi Mark, I have been banging on about EHC's for years on my channel. I find MH's more likely not to uncoil the cable. Thanks Phil.

I reported a campervan owner who hadn't uncoiled his lead to a warden on a C&CC site in St Neots last week and they did nothing about it. The same week I watched a post on FB about a caravan owner in the UK who hadn't uncoiled and the lead caught fire. Luckily, they caught it in time.

In 2005 my parents lost their camper van to the same error. It also damaged the house and like this story, nobody was hurt.
The fire service identified the frazzled remains of a coiled extension lead as the culprit. A very expensive lesson was learned.

When extension leads are coiled up and use especially when full amps use it heats up and can set on fire if used long enough

One issue that can be a problem with extension leads some are only for light currents, are quite a thin cable & don't always have an earth wire. OK for there intended use but to use for higher currents etc. Could add to a potential problem.

Mark it sounds like you were telling people to level your Caravan on the legs. You need level Ramps. Some newbies might use the legs, definitely a no no.

Hi Mark. Superb videos and love the speed you you get round. I charge my plug in hybrid using the trickle charger that came with the car and is designed to work of a plug top safely at a reduced charging rate. I always plug it directly into the external socket and not via an extension cable. There could also be a setting in the car as mine has to reduce the charging capacity to a minimum but obviously takes longer to charge. I always check with the site first and all the sites I have been on either have a minimal charge for another connection to the post if possible and thats the safest, or they have said as long as it connects to the van power supply. The issue here is not about the electric car charging, it is that you should always uncoil any extension cable including power from post to van.

    • @thecaravanplace
      @thecaravanplace  Год назад

Yes we have the same 3 pin charger for our little run around. As long as you understand the dangers and avoid them, there shouldn't be any problems.

    Hi Mark. Another great V.log.
Note to oneself Mark. Keep one power box charged up at each site just in case mains goes off.
Thank you for bringing about unwinding cables.
Especially It's not just when using any type of extension cable on a drum or just coiled up.
Whether it’s in a domestic around the house-garden / commercial or leisure setting, people do not follow best practice of unwinding and laying out any extension cables if on a reel or not, including long cables directly attached on appliances, and think it does not matter, because It’s less work later to put it away.
As for the numpty charging his/her EV against site rules, what were they thinking of, Site rules don’t apply to them, I Just can get free electric for my EV and I do not have to pay at a proper EV charging station. This will lead site owners for excessive inconsiderate site users further down the path of charging customers per Kilowatt of electric they use. I feel sorry for the innocent people next door.
Because I do both on/off grid caravanning. I have a shorter 16Amp cable as well as the standard length hook up cable. This is useful when hook up is available when electric post is close by, and I do not need the 25-metre cable or if electric post is too far away, I can join the long & short to reach safely when needed. Off grid, the shorter cable it’s long enough to connect to my solar inverter power box.
On another subject Do Not leave appliances switched on unattended. Especially cooking appliances.
I was at an event, where a family had put the gas oven on cooking food in campervan, and left it on whilst they went out for most of the day. They left it on for so long, the food caught fire and burned down not just their campervan, but a few other caravans & tents were ruined as well.

Just comment about 3way non compressor fridges. as we are getting hotter summers in the UK, even when the caravan is level and the fridge is working at its best, the 3 way fridges don't seem to cope with excessive outside heat, I have been thinking of having a Dometic or similar with sensor caravan/Motorhome fan kit, to the top fridge vent to improve the airflow. it also helps if the side where the fridge vents are if possible not to be facing the sun.

The site I’m on now in Porthmadog the caravan near mine he keeps plugging his car in👹
Waits till staff go home and unplugged it before 8am.
The site has two changing points but always people waiting.
I think we have a long way to go before we go all electric on cars.
