We are living in Tauranga now for 2 months. The speed limits are something to get used to. Our area (Papamoa) have alot of bike lanes which is nice, especially for the kids. The sidewalks (pavements) are generally used for walking and kids on their little scooters. We were also surprised that people actually stop at pedestrian crossings to let you cross the road 😂
My friends from Durban, SA said to me yesterday while we were crossing the pedestrian crossing that they had to get use to this because like you shared, cars back in SA do not stop for pedestrians. I was shocked and realized that I took this for granted being able to cross the road here safely without a second thought.
Great to hear a different perspective on the pothole situation! Check out the shared walkway if you haven't already. You can walk, run, scooter, bike or beam it, nice easy to get into town away from the roads.
Hehe, the town we came from in SA had the worst roads, so the NZ roads is a dream for us! We've seen the shared walkway, but haven't used it yet, will definitely check it out!
Thanks so much for the insightful content as always. It’s been such a treat watching your journey. Just an observation but your husband reminds me and my wife of the meme guy called Pain Harold :D . You two are such an inspiration
Glad it was so easy to convert your driver's licence apart from the marriage license debacle. It's also cool to hear about the differences in the roads as well. Sounds like the roads are very easy to drive on in NZ.
Overall it's very chilled driving in NZ (in our experience), there are a lot of windy roads though, but always pays off with amazing views and destinations :)
The grass at the edge of the pavement is called a burm, also in the UK you are allowed to park on both sides of the road in NZ you can only park in the direction of the traffic. Come down to Taranaki to see our potholes 😂😂. Gravel roads are another kiwi experience too!
Ah yeah, we forgot to mention the gravel roads! Haha...I'm sure there are many potholes now after this cyclone! The town we lived in, in South Africa had the worst roads, so it's really a dream driving here :)
Excellent share on your experience! Always love the bloops! 😅. Changing your last name on government, legal documents after marriage is such a pain!!! Great video guys! ~Cara
@@BeingBedingfield great to hear 👍 - thank you for posting with this news. You're Kiwi's now having survived your first natural disaster in NZ. We were still in Napier when cyclone Bola hit and called ourselves Kiwi's after that 🤣. Looking forward to your next vlog " how we survived a cyclone"👍👍 Take care. Cheers Phil S
Good to know that when we visit NZ one day, we don't have to apply for an international drivers license to drive in NZ. What sort of eye test does one have to do when converting your license? Hopefully not that crappy checkered flag left/up/right/down test they do here. Oooo, that 100km/h limit on highways - that would be TOUGH for me to adhere to - esp in a Tesla. hehehe. Thankfully in Cape Town, potholes are also taken care of quickly, but as one cannot be everywhere all the time, they have a very efficient system whereby you log a C3 aka a ticket when you spot one and they sort it out.
Let me assure you Glen that the reality of driving on our paved goat tracks AKA State Highways is you will be doing well to average 78kph over any distance . Lots of hills and twisty winding bits , very scenic but limited safe overtaking areas and many small towns and hamlets with 50 k zones . I am definately no nana on the road but I never set cruise control over 100 , the highway patrol guys have little sense of humour when it comes to speed , 40 k's over the limit is automatic loss of licence for 30 days plus a ticket . Also loss of vehicle for the same period is possible . But don't worry about it , come over , cruise and enjoy the place after all there's no great distances between , well anywhere really !
Hi Glen, it was pretty similar to the SA eye test hehe But very quick and easy. Awesome that potholes gets fixed in Cape Town! In Hilton it was horrible...But I do think things are changing there, the new mayor is amazing (I suppose, he's not so new anymore). Haha! The lower speed limits definitely takes some getting used to!
But one thing they get absolutely right in NZ, is the use of traffic circles. Wish they could educate South Africans on how to drive through traffic circles!!
Not sure if it's still this way, but years ago we found it really strange that cars turning at an intersection would wait behind the line for oncoming traffic to pass, before turning. In SA people drive half way into the intersection to turn once oncoming traffic is past.
Hey guys, great channel, just found your channel. This is a bit off topic, but may I kindly ask if you guys got assisted by an agent? Ever heard of Immigration Limited?

Chantz your process was so much longer 🤪😆
I really like that the potholes get filled quickly!
Haha, so much harder for us girls lol

Another informative vlog! Well done 👍🏻 so interesting!
Thanks so much Helen, we really appreciate all your support and comments every week :)
Thank you for this info, your channel is helpful, as I'm moving to NZ from CPT very soon.
Hope everything goes well 🙏😊
Nice my friend thanks for sharing po God bless
Even banks can be closed on weekends. Quite different. It’s like SA of old.
It's actually so nice that people can spend time with friends and family over weekends. Work/life balance here is amazing!
Very interesting video 👍 Thank you for sharing
Fair bit of highway is 110km/h in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty.
Oh really? We thought the max in the whole of NZ was 100. That's pretty cool! Hope you guys are ok after the cyclone?
Excellent share on your experience! Always love the bloops! 😅. Changing your last name on government, legal documents after marriage is such a pain!!! Great video guys! ~Cara
After 4 and a half years of marriage, I think I've finally changed all my legal documents, the driver's licence was the last one hehe
Once again, nice one guys 👌👍👌P.S. Hope you don't get hit too hard with this next storm.
Hi Phil, our area didn't suffer any damage or floods during the cyclone, thank goodness. So happy to see sunshine again today!

Come to Auckland, plenty potholes
Thinking of you guys having to weather cyclone Gabrielle.
Thanks Glen, we're all good and got through the cyclone without experiencing flooding or damage. Thanks so much for your message :)

Yesssss! Forgot to mention this in the video...it was one of the first things I noticed when we got here :) People are so much more patient here hehe
strap in guys, the coming days might be a bit rough with the approaching Cyclone. Stay safe.
Hi, it was a rough couple of days, but luckily we didn't get any damage or floods. Everything ok in your area?
@@BeingBedingfield all good here, thank goodness. Feel like we dodged the bullet. Hope you continue to stay safe and can keep making great content😼

Hi Tatenda, welcome to our channel :) We didn't use an agent, did the application ourselves.
One of the biggest differencies that a bus pulling out of a bus stop has right of way.
welcome home guys, take care keep safe keep well🤣❤✌
Wow 10 years 🤩, that's awesome and how often do you have to renew your license disk
Isn't it amazing :) the disks are also yearly, but a much easier process.
There is people potential in whangarei that has free studying and they also offer to pay for driving
How does the road rules differ from South Africa..?
Thanks
Are you allowed to smile and move like that in your Sth African licences?
