How to Replace a Brake Light Toyota Prius 2003-2009 Gen II XW20

- This is a video tutorial on how to replace the brake light on a Toyota Prius 2nd Gen XW20. It is a little more involved than a typical brake light bulb. You have to replace the entire brake light due to not being able to replace the LED's individually.

Thank you for a super video! You just saved me a $500 trip to the mechanic. A mere $65 from Amazon, some elbow grease, and a cold beer, and I have a working taillight again! Super easy to follow and great direction!
Also, THANK YOU for not adding crazy music or graphics. Just simple, clear instructions with easy to see camera angles. Well done!
Excellent! So happy it helped. Thanks for watching!
You are my hero! As a 74 year old woman, I decided to give it a go after a ridiculously expensive quote for having it done. I am a bit bothered that I never heard that snap of the two, shall I call them, prongs when put in place, but someone else’s suggestion of using the old gasket instead of the new makes sense to me. The new gasket just seemed too thick and puffy to allow the necessary close contact, even after I trimmed it a bit. I will go back to it, this time trying without removing everything since it is now familiar, and see what happens. Nonetheless, I am pretty proud, so thank you! You were at my side, literally, every step of the way.
Nice work! I'm really proud of you! Thanks for watching!
Great video! You did not skip steps and pan away when installing certain items, like most videos do. Lighting was perfect, detailed descriptions are great, and NO MUSIC IS PREFERRED. I dislike videos with music and all the effects, just distracting and annoying. You did it perfectly, thank you. Now I hope I have success in doing this!
After my local Toyota service center quoted me $607 to fix my break lights, I set out to fix my own. Thanks to your video, I saved $500 and learned how to use some new tools. My new brake lights work wonderfully! I’m so grateful that you guys made this tutorial, as is my ancient Prius 😊
Nice work! Thanks for watching Elana!
$607?! Damn, glad you decided to DIY.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! As a new single mother, this has saved me a huge amount of money. Not to mention that it feels good to have done it myself. Appreciate the real-time instructions, also.
You are so welcome! So glad to hear!
This is a good DIY video, but I was changing the assembly on the driver's side on a 2005 Prius, and encountered some issues. One, the side panel has a light. Instead of trying to remove the plug, push the light out the back, and voila, you got the panel off! Two, to fully get the panel off, remove the tie downs that are visible when you put the seats down. Three, I peeled off the old gasket off the assembly I removed, and put it on the new assembly after I removed the new gasket. Made it so much easier to get the 2 male pins in (feel a snap) and the rest is history!
LED array went out on my 2004 Prius. Dealer wanted $262 w/tax for the taillight assembly, and $184 labor to install it. After watching this video a couple of times, I ordered a taillight assembly for $80.84 and did it myself. My wife was skeptical, but she can't quibble with $366 saved. Thanks for posting this. I'm a fan.
Nice work! $366 bucks is a heck of a savings!
Thank you very much - I was able to replace both in an hour, easy, peasy, lemon squeezy. Thanks again 2CarPros - I am woman hear me roar, found it very empowering!
Glad it helped!
Excellent video. This format is best, no music is preferred. Everything came off and back on pretty easily, minimal force needed.
Great! Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much! We followed your directions and replaced the tail light on the driver side. Some things were slightly different on that side, but it was nearly identical. Your instructions were very clear and you took your time, which we appreciated. Helped us save so much money and get the job done! Thank you so much again!!
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for being one of the few channels that doesn’t blast awful music. You’re going to save me $500+. Thank you.
Awesome to hear! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the helpful video, I replaced the tail light and managed to only break the bottom clip the side panel on the re-assembly which for me is pretty good! I will mention that I replaced the drivers side and as some have mentioned you need to be mindful of the interior light when you are taking off the side panel but it pushes out easily but you want to be careful not to break the cable attaching it as you pull the side off.
Great video. Made the job easy. Knowing about the clips removes a lot of uncertainty about whether I’d break some plastic part. Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Awesome video, Seeley wanted 257 for this but I found some on ebay for 60 and thanks to this video, no labor cost
Thanks to your video, i easily replaced the brake light assembly on my wife's '05 Prius. Also took your advice & purchased the part thru amazon for $64. Total savings of $300!
Awesome! Nice work!
Very nice video with clear explanations. I needed to investigate an intermittent brake light ... and then found out it is built into the assembly! Now I need to order a pair of tail lights (thanks for the link) and replace them. (The left is cracked & fogged, the right has the bad brake light.) 2004 Prius, over 185,000 miles, original owner.
Thank you so much for watching!
The video was taken very clearly and precisely. Thank you very much for showing and sharing the video. Well done job.
I ordered from the link you shared, for my driver side, just completed the installation! It looks so good and it works!! Thank you so much for this tutorial. It made me feel confident that I could actually do this.
Awesome!!! We love helping people! Thank you for watching!
Great Video, just replaced the left light assembly on a 2005 Prius using this video. Took about an hour from start to finish. I had to remove one more piece of trim (carpet piece over the battery) This made removing side panel easier. Toyota part was $180, I paid $70 on Amazon.
Thanks for watching!
Great video. Easy to follow. Followed on laptop while we did it. Thanks. And yes, the narration while you did it was very helpful. Music can be annoying when you just want to learn how to replace a part.
Great video my guy! Perfect presentation
You can replace most of the bulbs individually too. Only the brake light itself requires a whole replacement... Wish they would've just made that a regular bulb!
I like this video. I need to see as well as hear as you work. Music is distracting. Thank you for showing me how to do this. 😎 kool!
Great video. Easy to follow. I had to replace the driver side. The only difference from the passenger side is a plastic compartment with one screw and light on the inside panel. Careful pulling inside panel out and if you push the light from the back it just pops out. No need to disconnect from connector. Thanks again for the video.
John Czerwinski I changed only through hole, dont Need to takeout panel at all
Thanks -- I just changed out my 2005 Prius rear light assembly, with my laptop in the back, following along. Worked great!
Awesome!!! Thanks for watching!
Replaced both tail light assemblies for $100, cant beat that.
This video helped me replace the passenger taillight on my mother-in-law's 2004 Prius quickly and easily. Thank you for making it
No problem! It is so much cheaper to do it yourself! Thank you for watching!
Another thanks for posting this video...it saved me a $300 charge from the dealer.
Something that may be potentially helpful for removal of the old assembly is to insert a wide putty knife on the clip side (outer side) to add a little leverage on that side while a helper pulls on the inner side that is already loose from the bolts.
Awesome! I love saving others trips to the dealer! Thanks for watching!
AWESOME!! I followed this video bit by bit and was able to change my light! Thank you so much! (Got mine from Amazon too)
I was rear-ended so the old light lost its lens. It also bent with the frame so the new light didn't fit perfectly but it's close enough, it works and it will now pass state inspection here in North Carolina. Thank you again!
Awesome! It is so nice to have positive feedback and have it help someone! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video, I'm going to replace grandma's Prius brake light tomorrow ^^. Thanks again.
Excellent video. You clearly explain what needs to be done. Way to demystify! Thank you so much.
Thanks for watching!
Well Done, clear instructions and I very much appreciated commenting as you go with NO music.
Ok great that's the way I want to do them from now on. Thank you so much for watching!
This is a good, thorough procedure description, but the only thing that absolutely has to be removed is the two little plastic panels in the trunk behind the light; none of the trunk floor has to be removed. It's a tight fit for your hands, but if you can do it, it'll save you over half the time. First, look at either a picture or a replacement lens to see where the 2 posts are that the 10mm nuts screw on. There is a small slip-on wire retainer on top of those posts, and so when you reach in, that's the first 2 things you have to remove (pull straight off). After that, reach in and put the 10mm socket on the nut; you might be able to loosen the nuts by hand and a socket; if the nuts are on too tight, use the small (4") ratchet to break the nuts loose 1 turn, then they can be removed the rest of the way by hand. Once the nuts are off, get a good grip on the fixture and firmly pull it straight back. Replace with a good fixture, hand-tighten the nuts, then use the socket for extra grip to tighten them a bit more. (Use the ratchet if you're still concerned the nuts might not be tight enough. Put the wire retainers back on the posts, slap the plastic panels back in place and, voila!, Done! (I just did this, and it took about 10 min.) Remember to check them (back up to a wall at night, or your security camera, or get a friend to help for just a second.)
thank you for this video. part stores are saying they can or cant get the part.. thank you for the link! that was extremely helpful!
Thank you much for this video.
I just did the passenger side and it took about 10 minutes.
My electrical connector was stuck so it took a few minutes to disconnect, (the hardest part).
Other than that, this was a super easy install thanks to your video!
Very helpful video. I just replaced my passenger side 2005 brake light assembly. But the square port is not totally useless. It's useful when you only have to replace one of the non-LED bulbs.
I also had to replace the driver side on a 2004 Prius. In addition to the trunk light, I had to remove the 10 mm bolt that he said we didn't have to. There was also a plastic clip on the side panel in the lower corner by the driver-side passenger door. Then there was some other attachment of the side panel to the floor of the trunk between the spare tire compartment and the back seat, so I never got it off, but I was able to get it far enough out of the way to access the tail light assembly. Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much! This is so helpful and love how the video was done in real time with you explaining each step as you did it. ;❤
Nice video, helped this old sparky R and R my first Prius tail light assy :)
This was very helpful guiding me through my Prius 2004 passenger side light assembly with no errors. A running commentary is the better format than music and dubbing over. Well done.
Thanks for the Amazon tip.. Saved me $30!! Nice video.
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
Thank you, the way you produced this video was very helpful!
Thank you for watching!
Thanks for this video. My husband was able to successfully install the part and didn't have any parts left over!! My car is a 2005.
Awesome! Thank you for watching!
Thanks so much for making this detailed video, My driver's side brake light went out on my 2005 Toyota Prius. Going to go an get a replacement from the local junk yard instead of Amazon. .
Glad it helped!
Great job on this video, thanks for making it!
Thank you for watching!
It is in the description. Thank you for watching!
Best instruction video I found for this job!. Thanks
Thanks for watching!
great job on the very informative tutorial! Thanks for putting it together.
Thank you for watching!
Great presentation. Helps even a novice non mechanic like me!
Great to hear!
Thank you for no music, it was perfect
No problem!
Thank you for the guidance! Saved me a lot of money!
Right on! Thanks for watching!
Thanks, that is a great video. You guys are pro! So here is the mystery: how do the LED brake light get power? I see three or four wires going to that assembly, and I replaced the top bulb, the big orange bulb on the top, because I thought it must be the brake light. So I still don't see how the brake lights get power. Great Video!
Your video was so helpful I don’t know anything about cars and I followed your video and was able to change my break light with out any help
Very cool thank you for watching Kailey!
Nice, thorough and great quality video. Thanks man
Much appreciated!
Thanks man you saved me a fortune!
Thank you so much for watching!
Perfect instructions! Just replaced my 2004 Prius break light assemblies (purchased from Amazon), and had no trouble at all. Hardest part was just getting the side panel back on properly. But your instructions were great. Thanks!
Nice work! Thanks for watching Margaret!
This video is perfect! Thank you so much ❤️
You're so welcome!
I liked the video and found it very helpful! Thank you. 👍👍
You're welcome!
Thank you, this made it easy for me! 10 minute job thanks to you
Excellent!
Great video... thanks for sharing the knowledge! 😉👍
Thanks for watching!
Yes!!!!! Man!!! This is THE VIDEO!!!! I Hit liked and subscribed!! Thank you advance
Awesome! Glad to help! Thanks for watching!
Great tutorial. Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
You are doing the good work Sir ! Thank you !
Thanks and welcome!
Thank you! Great work!
Our pleasure!
This is so complicated for a break light, thanks Toyota.🤦🏻♂️
Oh well, you got it now though!
No doubt!!!
Ever tried changing a head light lamp?
jspanos500 that’s also a nightmare for a Prius
Yup. Great vid thanks a lot 👍
Thanks for the info,it will make the job much easier. Thanks for sharing. Harold Krotzer
Thanks for watching!
You don't need to remove all the trim. You can access both nuts through the small access panel. It takes a few minutes and no chance of damaging clips.
My hands couldn't fit. Thanks for watching Julian!
This was great - thank you
You are so welcome!
OMG I just had this done less than ten thousand miles ago, now, brake lights are out again! Where else can I go besides Toyota? They're gonna charge me more than my 05 Prius is worth! We got the same year and model, so thank you for this informative info video.
To remove the big side panel on my 05 prius there would need to be a lot more things removed. Once I got over that quandary I discovered it didn't really need to be removed to do the job. That caused the project to take up a lot more time and energy to get past that. Otherwise a well done instructional video.
Very helpful. Thank you.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching Jennifer!
Thanks! That helped me a lot.
Glad it helped!
Thanks very helpful👍
Thanks for watching Angela!
Actually you can reach everything just by taking off the plastic cover that you would take off when replacing the bulbs. It doesn’t need to be that complicated like you showed us here.
Did the new assembly come with bulbs or should we replace the bulbs?
Does the headlight you linked in the description actually fit a 2008 prius? It says 04-05
Thank you 🙌👌
You're welcome 😊
Thanks! I just changed without taking panel I did just through hole everything :)
Thanks for watching!
Me too, you dont have to take all that apart
@@winkyjackson2061 thats what i was thinking mine went out?! Can i just go threw hole?! Forsure?
@@RR-ud9km yes
Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Between 2:04 and 2:20 of the video the 10mm bolt referenced can be removed. I ran into problems too when using a 12 sided socket. A 6 sided socket grabs the bolt head more easily than the 12 sided socket. Just commenting on my personal experience.
Nice video but I wish you would have showed how to snap the clips in I can't get the plastic clips to snap in? After you put the screws back
Thanks man, but one question, for my right brake light there is only one led not lighting, the other 5 work properly. What would you recommend me? Since according the video I see that you change the whole piece. Thanks!
Maybe you can take the house apart and solder on a new LED but for me it is easier to just buy a new unit. Thanks for watching!
@@2carpros thanks for the answer! Will you have a link to show how it can be bought? In Spain I cannot see anything, neither Amazon, thanks again!
Oh man, what a rip off just for a damn brake light, thanks for the video
Yep not the best design. Thanks for watching!
I prefer this technical type without music, when I watched the one to make a self watering planter the music was not distracting, bit on this it would be!! BTW I got mine ail assembly for $58.75 from AM Auto Parts Thanks!!
So you rather have this type over narration with music? Because this is the way I'd like to do things from now on.
Good price! Toyota wants 200 a piece for them! Thanks for watching!
Is it possible to only replace the LED lights part of this tail light, since only four of those are burn out on the passenger side of my 2005?
Technically yes if you solder the LEDs off and on. But the controller or resistor or other capacitors could be the problem. Thanks for watching!
how you get 12v from/(for) brake light? -for front parking sensor- i tried to connect it on each of the wires (one was green and one was white with black stripe) and it didnt work..what should i do? (btw i have a toyota prius 2007)
That white clip in the center should power everything. You shouldn't need to do anything with the wires from the battery
can you just buy the replacement bulbs and keep the same assembly? or do you have to replace the whole unit?
Nope. They are little LED's that are soldered on. Thanks for watching Brad!
What is this thing called? 11:07. The thing that tightens.
What are the names of all the tools that you need for this job? Feel like I need to double check in order to get all the ducks in a row before I attempt this.
Thumbs up thanks
No problem 👍
Do I have to do this if just the top light on my taillight is not working ?? Or can I just buy a bulb
Nope. It is a whole panel that comes in the housing. Thanks for watching!
Pretty helpful video but I don’t think it’s correct to state the holes are just guides for pegs. Had to pry assembly off with leverage and can’t seem to reverse process no matter how much pressure I apply. Light works but the fitment is now way off with a big gap and I’m concerned about leakage etc. The assembly I removed had plastic pegs; replacement is metal. I wonder if this is source of added resistance.
Did you ever find a solution to this? In the middle of replacing my taillight and I can't get the pegs to fit no matter how hard I press. Mine are also made of metal
@@JelloOnWeb Hi there, I'm replying from a different account. I didn't, really. I just got it as far as it could go and gave up trying to push it further after I cracked the housing. Doesn't look great but it does not appear to be leaking so I called it good. But in hindsight I wish I had tried grinding the pegs down a hair to make 'em fit. Not sure that is a proper solution so you'll have to make that call. Good luck!
@@zverina Ah that's a shame. I also considered grinding them down but I don't have a dremel. Honestly besides the gap it doesn't look too bad, so I'm alright with just leaving it the way it is for now. Thanks for taking the time to respond!
@@JelloOnWeb You're welcome! I've been driving with it that way for months and it hasn't shaken loose so it's probably fine.
Wait do you can’t just put a nee break light in it?
Is it the same way with a regular 2008 Prius?
Very similar. Thanks for watching!
Question i'm doing the driver's side. The tray also needs to come out. But, I have all nuts and everything ready but the panel is hung up at the light area? Why? It's not popping off? Thx
Does it wiggle at at all? I think there might be a clip that pops off. Thanks for watching!
@@2carpros I got it clip thx for the video
You can put the car in reverse, and engage the e-brake all the way, if you don't have someone else to check the reverse lights.
Anyone have problems reinstalling the light unit and getting the pegs on the outside edge to snap back into the holes? I am left with a raised edge on the outside edge of the light unit which does not match the other original one. Thanks in advance for any help!
Yes, same problem. Struggled mightily to snap em back to no avail. Fitment is poor now and this video is incorrect when stating the holes are just guides for the pegs. I had to pry assembly off and it gave with a pop; reversing the process seems impossible. Sorry not helpful but you are not alone…
My tailgate brake lights works, my reverse lights works... the only lights that doesn’t work is the “night” light when driving at dark times! Do I need to replace the whole unit or just the bulbs!? A mechanic told me that I need to replace the whole thing! Can someone here help with this!? Thank youuuu in advance!
Are the brake lights and hazard lights one of the same? My brake lights went, but today I discovered the hazard lights don't work either! Please help,! I already got to take the car in for regular maintinamace, check engine light says so lol. That'll cost $350 plus, now, I'm looking at high cost for brake lights! I can't do it myself like you. I wish you'd come to my house and fix my car! Is there any place else I can go besides Toyota for repairs, and maintenance, like Valvoline, or some place like that? Please help. I'm broke and a total air head when it comes to car stuff. I need help ASAP! No brake lights! No hazard lights!
I would use Google Reviews on Google Maps and look for a local repair shop with good reviews. Maybe ask a neighbor if they know a good shop? Thanks for watching!
FYI gen II prius is 04-09. 03 is a gen I
Link is NOT for a 2006 Pruis. Won't fit.
