I hated them as well. Last week my wife found a good (really good) deal on one. Not going to sell my Durango with the 5.7 Hemi, but I use about the same gas pulling the dodge out of the driveway as I do going across down, mashing the accelerator and seeing how much fuel I can burn in the prius. Despite my attempts to kill as many big white bears as possible... Still on the same take of gas, the one I filled up for $4 when we were driving the car home. (it had half a tank when we took it home.) I'm really trying to hate it. But its comfortable, is the fastest go cart I've ever driven. And really if you think of it like a really fun, high tech Go Cart, that's road legal, then it is kinda fun to drive. At 6'3" there's plenty of leg room, and again, the seats are really comfortable.

Found a blue 2007 Prius that is loaded, everything checked for options. Owner says it won't run right, sells it to me for $500. $200 later with 10 hours of labor and it runs like new. A couple cells went bad is all. Car has 417K miles. Added an additional 19, 400 miles in 3 months of Lyft driving and it hasn't complained at all. Car was garage kept by an older couple, so it still looks brand new. A great find for such a reliable appliance.
Don't replace every cell, just the ones that have a much lower voltage than the rest in the pack. If they all measure at 7.4v but a couple measure
6.5v or such, replace those cells.

I have owned and loved Priuses since the 2005 model and for the life of me, don’t understand why so many guys hate them. They are lightweight, so the combined 135 hp really makes them peppy, and the electric motor delivers all of its torque right off cracking of the throttle. It puzzled me so, I started asking all of my friends the question. The most definitive answer was from a young lady who quipped, “The reason that so many guys hate Priuses is because they fear that their peepees aren’t big enough!”
    Suddenly, it all made sense!

We're on our second Prius. Sold the first one, 2008 Gen II, and bought a 2018 Gen IV. More leg room, Radar cruise, Lane holding, Cool assist graphic with the back up camera that makes parking a breeze even though it's also got assisted parallel and back in parking. Gave up the storage that the Gen II had. But when I cleaned out the Gen II to sell it I noted that all the crap I'd been carrying around for years and hadn't used didn't need to be put in the new car anyway.

I was thinking of getting a gen 3 last year but decided on the gen 2, just because the interior is more normal or something that belongs in a late 90s honda (isn't comparably ugly to a similar year audi a3 interior). Gen 4 feels more like a corolla hatch than something between a camry and a corolla.

Apparently man, it's only US spec Priuses that handle like shit, they're exactly the same from Japan besides steering wheel position.
EU spec Priuses were always the ''touring spec'', which had rear sway-bars that were thicker than the average pencil and had 16'' or 17'' rims. The Japanese/US spec cars are much more tuned for comfort and have stupid looking 15'' rims with giant sidewall tyres on them. I knew my car was 'slow', but I never understood the bad handling aspect. I managed to drive a Japanese import with 15'' rims and fuck it was bad. It didn't feel like the same car as the Euro specs. Much more floaty for comfort, but just really shit.
Fortunate for you guys, rims, tyres and anti-roll bars are cheap in the US.

I had to achingly buy a hybrid. I drive up to 4K miles a month on a college student budget, my Subaru gas bill was borderline $450 and it was time for something else. I purchased a 2008 Prius Touring, I still think my car is ugly - love the look of the third gen way way more but with my car, the savings, space, and technology made this car way, way more attractive to me. I’ve already driven more than 40k miles this year and have only had oil changes. My gas tank holds 11 gallons, goes on empty at 9 1/2 and I can easily achieve 400-500 miles on a tank. It costs less than $25 to fill here in Oregon and I spend maybe $150-$200 in gas. My insurance is the same as my old Subie, my car payment is $40 higher. Overall with the gas (and my free lifetime oil changes) I’m saving some good money. Plus there’s literally no reason to not travel and adventure anymore! Yes this things is slow, but probably not as slow as you may think. The traction control is a bitch at times, and people HATE when I pass them. My driving habits haven’t changed much since I got it, though I’m more cautious about my fuel consumption. I’m still a fast driver though and when I’m driving slow for fuel savings I’m also aware and I try to be courteous to other drivers who are creeping up behind me. I’m probably a rare Prius driver being someone who tries NOT to be a Prius driver and other Prius drivers still piss me off. But I love my Prius and I’m now a huge Toyota fan!

I've heard of the recalcitrant second generation traction control but never experienced it. They had that fixed by the time my wife's 2010 (third generation) was made. The reliability is nothing short of incredible for any second or later generation Prius. My 2002 - a *much* less reliable first generation - needed its first repair a couple months ago... the inverter cooling pump failed. $150 and a morning's work got it back on the road. Even the brakes are original at 193K miles.

I think its kind of strange that people don't understand why other people buy hybrid cars. In my case, it has nothing to do with being a hipster or going green,. Where I live, gas costa about $3.5 a gallon while average salary is less than $500 a month. So it is only natural that you would want a car that consumes a reasonable ammount of gasoline. Customs clearance and import taxes for hybrids here are 50% of the gasoline cars, as a result, you get a city where every 3rd car is a Prius. Just come visit Tbilisi, you will be blown away by the number of hybrid cars in the streets.

When people are under financial pressure they tend to make more logical decisions. If you need basic transportation and don't want to waste gas it is hard to beat a Prius. The more expensive the gas, the more a hybrid makes sense versus a regular compact or mid-size car.

    • @Davidbld
      @Davidbld 5 лет назад

@@billalexander8011 maybe its because I have old 2002 prius, but the money I've saved on gas has been spent on fixing the Main battery. My next car will be a fuel efficient non-hybrid sedan, and I have no doubt it'll probably cost just as much as my hybrid to upkeep (less battery costs, more on gas). Tired of fixing main battery issues that cost me to much time and money.

    • @toyotaprius79

Computers get in the way of that.
One guy did it to a first gen 2000-2003 model but had to go through hell with custom pipes and etc. For newer generations, what happens is that if the tuned engine is producing too much excess torque (which can be read by unusually high amps from the generator), the computers would limit or shut off throttle, change air/fuel mix ratios, etc.
Applying NOX into the intake or changing the cam shafts to the Otto cycle ones found in the Yaris would have the same effect. Toyota made the Prius bullet proof from tuning and emissions tampering. lol Quite the opposite of VW.
So far the only way to make it fast is by not using the brakes. ... By improving handling and weight distribution.

      Just to clarify:
      6 1.2v cells in a 7.2v module
      2 modules in a block
The service plug/HV fuse splits the pack into halves, 19 modules each for NHW11, 19 and 9 modules each for NHW20. Yes the service plug splits a block (which to me doesn't make much sense).
      NHW11 19 blocks, 38 modules, 228 cells, 273.6v nominal.
      NHW20 14 blocks, 28 modules, 168 cells, 201.6v nominal.
You will often see the battery voltage for the NHW20 incorrectly listed as 500v because there is a bidirectional DC-DC converter in the inverter that can boost the battery voltage up to as much as 500v to feed the inverter's internal DC bus for high speed travel, IE from freeway speeds up to the electronically limited/governed top speed of about 105-107 MPH.

I remember seeing your video years ago. MY 2007 Prius has 266,000 miles and I just replaced the hybrid battery. A company called Greentec. They have location 4 hours away in Dallas and the guy drove up to my house in SW Oklahoma and swapped out my battery with a reconditioned one with a 2 year warranty. Cost me $1399. And $440 for them to come to my house. Was well worth it. I was getting 40 mpg on average with my old battery but it was slowly dying and causing weird things to happen with my car. Plus I had the red triangle showing up everyday. I had to clear the codes with my bluetooth code reader for the car to drive. With the reconditioned battery I got 48 mpg using cruise control at about 68 mph driving to the Lawton OK to go to Home Depot. Local Toyota dealer wanted $3000 for a brand new battery. I didn't need brand new. I just wanted good enough. And I'm happy. Love how reliable and spacious the Prius is. Thanks for the video!

I would be very careful when any company says they will change out a battery with a 5 year warranty. The reason why is it is "NOT A BATTERY", it is 2 stacks of "28 battery "CELLS" or a total of 56 cells. These cells die out at different intervals kind of similar to light bulbs in a lamp. When a company replaces these, they only replace the bad cell or cells that are not working, they don't replace all of them. So the rest of the cells obviously since they are the same age, and have had the same amount of usage as the other cells that stopped working may not have a huge amount of time left. The guarantee you would be getting for $1500. and 5 years would just be on the one or few cells they replaced, not the rest of the cells, and remember there are 56 cells. This is the part that gets expensive is to keep replacing battery cells.

Fixed my 02' battery with $150.
I found it was just a wire harness with sensors on it that runs along one side of the pack. A few of the sensors were corroded and not sending the correct voltage to the computer. I assume it's a common problem with the 1st gen Prius. Bought new harness at dealer for $150.

We rented one a few years ago and drove from Vegas to Boise for Thanksgiving. The car has such good electronics that it with the colder climate, the air pressure dropped and the tire pressure light came on. Not knowing what it meant, we had to stop and check that out and finally went to a Toyota dealer to check that out. Gas mileage was great and we even drove thru some areas on the highway covered in snow behind a long line of cars. Finally bought a used one a few months ago and we really love the car. Middle of summer and the battery does discharge and recharge drastically, which it didn't do when the temps were below 100 degrees. So, may have to check out the life of the battery. Fyi, got the car with 84K and now we are a little over 87k on it.

That may be true if you are willing to pay for various repairs. My GF has one w 180K on it. It's not a bad car, but less reliable than my Matrix. Recently it's had a coolant pump leak, the driver's window won't close completely, the a/c fan only works when it feels like it, and some weird thing w the dash display not always turning on and when this happens, the car doesn't shut off when you hit the power button. The engine still runs well, but the Prius has lots of stuff that has gotten flakey before it reached 200K.

IMO, we are regarded / upgraded to 'almost acceptable' in most mainstream social circles -- thanks to the fact that Gen 2 Prius' with 300K miles and more are still on the road, getting 50 MPG projecting their dorky/ futurist/ techno-evolved charm while sitting silently at traffic lights across America.

Even after removing the plug, there are still powered up capacitors. You must wait at least 10 minutes before touching it, giving you time to take out the seats and panels. After that if you touch the contact wires to the cells without rubber gloves, you will die. Only after removing the wires can individual cells be handled.

Both my wife and I owned a Prius. I had the regular model, she had the slightly larger Prius V. We absolutely loved them, but they did have one drawback. Twice we were stuck in our home for days after two significant snow storms, and our local municipality laying down on the job and not properly plowing our cul-de-sac. Unfortunately, the Prius has very little ground clearance and is only 2 wheel drive. After the second time getting snowed in, the minute the road cleared I went straight to the Toyota dealership and traded her in for the RAV4 Hybrid. I absolutely love this vehicle. The MPG is not as good as the Prius, but the ground clearance and AWD make it worth it.

The Prius is not an Electric car. It only drives in EV only mode for brief periods of time. The electric motor is mainly for assisting the gas engine like when accelerating or driving at slow speeds like in a parking lot.
The newer ones do have a EV mode that can go a lot farther without using gas. Those ones will have a LOT larger battery.
