Your channel is awesome! FYI...I'm here in Detroit, Michigan...last week, I finally received my Philips recall CPAP replacement. Its a "Recertified" Dreamstation. Its been 16 months since I submitted. In the meantime, I bought a Resmed Airsense 11 and Resmed AirMini for travel (per your recommendation). A HUGE HEADACHE WITH TONS OF BACK and FORTH. Thank you for bringing people together on CPAP topics!

I did the test Nicko recommended last night. I've been trying a mandibular advancement device and the SpO2 results looked great with my Wellue SleepU monitor (samples ever second). Well not so great when using the CPAP at 4 cm. It showed that although I was averaged 98.77 saturation, my AHI was actually 10.7! Whoah, that really made me think. It's mostly REM and positional so for tonight I'll re-test using the side sleeping backpack but what a revelation. Thank you Nicko for this tip. It just goes to show you that even with a good O2 monitor you really can't tell if you're still having apneas/hypopneas through the night.

I recently started taping my mouth and using breath rite style nose strips. I now only need to sleep 5 hours a night a wake up feeling like a million bucks. You know how I know its getting me into REM sleep! I used to have short few second dreams... I guess because I was waking up every time I start to really fall asleep hard. Now I have these super long dreams. These dreams are like a movie. Try the combo, its been amazing for me.

Kinesiology tape, but with no slits, is what I’ve been using - with CPAP.
Interestingly i stumbled on one that is perfect for me first time, but didnt realise till it was out of stock and the two i have tried since aren’t quite as good. One is not quite sticky enough and is a bit stiff, the other is a bit too sticky!
So even in kinesiology tape theres slight differences so its worth trying a few.

The only thing that stopped my mouth leak and cheeks puffing out was a cheap chinstrap from Amazon. The design is such that it holds my chin in place AND prevents my cheeks from inflating. I'm finally having a restful sleep after 6 months of mixed results. I'm using the chinstrap and a bit of mouth tape but it gets the job done. The tape alone didn't prevent my mouth from filling up with air as the air leaked from my nasal cavity into my mouth.

I've been on sleep therapy for 20 plus years and probably should have been on it many years prior. One thing I was never able to conquer was mouth breathing even with chin straps and FF masks. After seeing Scott's video last summer, I bought some tape and tried it along with an O2 ring. My results were stunning. With no CPAP,, I could average 95-96% saturation with 3-4 drops below 90%. I then purchased an Airsense 10 C2C to replace my recalled Phillips unit, and my average maintained 95-96% with NO drops below 90% and the graph line is pretty flat for the entire night. I also lowered my maximum pressure from the Doctor recommended 15 to 13 and I find far few mask leaks and more normal operating pressure seems to be in the 12 range. BTW, I did consult my sleep doctor about the tape, and I'm using some 3M 1" tape that he recommended.
Your results may vary, but I'm finding that I, too, am no longer sleepy during the day and my utilization rate is nearly 100% and my numbers are excellent in my SleepHQ reports. I truly appreciate all the work by Nicko in bringing the numbers to the people. I'm a data driven person.

I've been using cpap for over 19 years. I firmly believe that cpap has saved my life. I have only spent 5 nights out of the 19 years without the machine because of power outages or forgetting my machine on a trip. I have a ff mask but, being a mouth breather, I have always struggled with dry mouth. I got the humidifier and that enabled me to continue using the machine. In the last couple of years, I have lost 80 pounds and the dry mouth has gotten really bad even with the humidifier. I saw your video on taping and I began taping my mouth. I also made a chin strap which, with the tape, keeps my jaw in place. I also used a neti pot with saline solution to clean out my nasal cavity every night. I'm averaging 0.2-0.5 AHI each night.
Lately I've been wondering if I was ready to quit cpap. I really like your idea of the O2 meter along with dropping the pressure down to 4 and then checking the cpap report each night.
    Great video! Thanks!

Definitely agree with mouth tape. I cant use Cpap due to perforated (not deviated) septum caused by surgery to untangle my nasal passages at top of my nose. I tried taping as an experiment..it works for me. Even tried plastic "in mouth" anti snoring gadgets and they are hopeless for me. So taping is the answer and I like the tip to cut a small slit to allow for coughing. Brillianti info..thanks.

We do use mouth tape, but not in the same way as Scott.
One of my sons has REM-related sleep apnea. Treatment started by the somnologist with a Resmed Airsense 11, but it didn't work out. My son is autistic and the mask would cause too much discomfort during his sleep, which caused him to either not sleep at all or he pulled the mask off while not being aware. He only was able to keep it on for less than an hour each night.
So, the next step was a mandibular advancement device (MAD), with the exact same results. Either my son didn't sleep at all or he would take it out without being aware.
That's where the mouth-taping would come in. The combination helps keep his tongue in place, for him to breathe through his nose, and for him to be unable to pull out the MAD during his sleep. The results have been like day and night, he was no longer overly tired and his schoolwork has been improving constantly ever since.
However, we did get a clear warning from his somnologist, which is to ensure to not fully tape the mouth and to not use it at all when he has congestion. After all, mouth taping is restrictive and possibly dangerous. That's why it's never possible to use it to fully replace a PAP device or a MAD, but only should be used as a possible addition in certain specific situations.

I use 3M transpore surgical tape across my lips with the Resmed n30i nasal cushion. It works great. Just over the lips, the 1 inch roll is the perfect width. I have a full beard and mustache and would rather not lose them. That said, I've been unsuccessful with a handful of different full face masks. Just can't find one that seals over the beard. Add to that my mouth falls open when I use any type of nasal mask. I've tried chinstraps but they're all uncomfortable and slide around the beard when I move in my sleep. The tape is simple and I don't even feel it after a few minutes. The n30i is so low profile that after a few minutes of watching TV before bed you don't notice either the mask or the tape. The tape stays on all night and is relatively easy to remove in the morning or when needed. I highly recommend as an addon to CPAP and over a chinstrap if you have problems keeping your mouth closed, especially if you want the comfort of a low profile nasal mask. I should add that the Dreamwear nasal cushion is also super comfortable with this set up. Trying both I found the n30i to fit my face a little better.

This is quite a coincidence. I, too, am a Mike G, and I use the same tape with my nasal pillows for the same reason - full beard and moustache. I just peeled my tape off a few minutes ago as I just woke up, and I will point out that you WILL catch the odd hair in it when you are peeling it off, and that is not awesome. I just use a short piece of tape maybe 1-1/4" or 30mm long. It doesn't completely seal my mouth, but it stops my mouth from being able to open significantly.
I used to use chin straps (I've probably had four or five of them) and they are annoying and can give you wicked bed-head.

    • @mikegraham7078
      @mikegraham7078 Год назад +1

@@johnbeddoe782 I have used several kinds of tape. The 3M surgical tape is really nice but I have used regular 3M first aid bandaging tape of the variety that you might buy at a drug store, and I have tried the same stuff from Johnson and Johnson, and it works just fine. You want pretty wide stuff - like 19mm (3/4") wide. I was worried that over time it might cause stress to my lips from peeling them off every day, but that hasn't been a problem. I use a short piece, perhaps 30mm (1-1/4) long, horizontally across my lips in the center. If you try to open your mouth you can still breathe on both sides of it. First I dry my lips (important!) then I tuck the piece of tape under my moustache to try to get it as high up my top lip as reasonably possible, then when that is pressed down I close my mouth and try to compress my lips a bit, then press on the bottom half of the tape.
The tape is so profoundly better than a chin strap that I can scarcely explain it.
When I first started doing this I used to put the tape on in the bathroom with the aid of a mirror, but now I can keep the tape at my bedside and just pop a piece on without hardly thinking about it. Lovely.

I tested my Galaxy Watch 5 pro while also wearing an 02ring. I found them to be remarkably similar in data. The watch would sometimes record a few percentage points lower than the ring, but it did record each dip more or less the same as the 02ring. I think it's about positioning (wrist versus finger) rather than actual functionality, at least in my use case. There was one element he mentioned that I did incorporate into my supplement regime with Vitamin D and Vitamin C. That's had a huge positive outcome for me. My numbers ticked up across the board whether I was wearing the cpap or not -- but not enough for me to consider ditching it. What would be the physiological reason that mouth tape alone (without CPAP to compliment it) would at least partially reduce the average events per hour being caused by the Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

  • @itsBenChang
    @itsBenChang Год назад +2

So I think the mouth tape and the reasoning why it helps some people because it forces them to breathe through their nose. Breathing through the mouth can cause all kinds of issues that would be less severe if you breath through your nose only. If you can maintain breathing through the nose, it could help with snoring, sleep apnea, etc.
I'm currently reading a book right now called Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art. The author of the book goes into details about his experience and explaining how you can train to breathe better, why you should breath through your nose, etc.

Not in all cases. I have to fully tape my mouth-no slits in the tape because of the high 14 pressure I need. I am NOT a mouth breather, but the higher pressurization forces air out between even closed lips. So, your premise is not universally true.

This caused me to start mouth breathing at night. Found out about taping on a cpap forum about 10 years ago. Been taping since then. At first, it scared me to do it. But I was desperate. What if I vomit during the night? Then I realized the only time I did that was when I drank, which I no longer do. So I decided to chance it.
I have accidentally forgotten to put my mask back on in the middle of the night after using the restroom. Never noticed anything until I woke up and realized the mask wasn't on. While I would not recommend taping for anyone else, it seems to work for me. So I keep doing it. I get restful sleep with AHI numbers in the .5-2.5 range. Chapstick on the lips before tape is a nice approach. Over the years, I have lost weight from 200 lbs to 150 lbs so I am no longer in the overweight category according to CDC. About every six months, I try sleeping without the cpap and tape for a couple of nights to see how it goes. But the tiredness comes back after a couple of nights and I go back to using the machine.

I HATE my cpap machine with a passion. I can't stand anything on my face while I'm sleeping, I just can't. I've been trying for about a week now and can only tolerate it for about two hours. Every time I start to fall asleep, it wakes me up. When my mouth drops open, it feels like it's suffocating me, and I rip it off my face. If I can find an alternative, I'm definitely going to try it.

I used to wake up in the middle of the night gasping for air. Not anymore! I learned about this from another fellow named Patrick McKeown, but I tape my mouth at night too and so does my aunt who learned about mouth-taping separately. I use 1/4 wide 3M Micropore Surgical Tape. I position the tape vertically over my lips (other are better off if it's placed horizontally) because that is usually sufficient to keep air from inadvertantly getting inside my mouth. I fold a pull tab on it so that it is easy to get off. As long as no air comes in through my mouth AND manage to stay on my side, I don't have breathing issues! This trick has likely added years to my life.

He really is a stand up guy. Very traditional, does what has been working in his field, slow to adopt new tools or systems. Unfortunately that sometimes includes personal safety if it slows his workflow. I think that mindset bled over to SA treatment.

My doctor set up a referral to a sleep specialist and that appointment is coming up next month. Whatever the outcome of that visit, I absolutely refuse to rely on a machine to live. This is going to sound dramatic but I equate it to being on an oxygen tank for the rest of my life. I have already changed my diet and exercise habits and limiting alcohol intake. I had the option of getting a nasal mask or face mask and I went with the nasal mask. A cure, to me, implies the underlying cause for the problem was permanently removed so even if you don't have access to the item, it won't immediately come back. This isn't the case with taping, it's as much of a "cure" as taping a tennis ball to your back. Treatment perhaps, but not a cure.

We see for-profit sleep therapists and manufacturers like Resmed and Philips and even your O2 ring telling us that their treatment is going to solve all of our problems... at a price. (Not to mention the ongoing maintenance costs!)
Mouth taping absolutely does work. I tried it before getting my CPAP machine. And you don't need fancy tape like kinesio tape and you don't need such a huge piece covering your entire mouth and chin. I used about 3 cm of surgical tape. No need to seal your mouth shut, you just need to 'encourage' it to not open while you're sleeping.

His excessive daytime sleepiness was not just because sleep apnea but also because his depression. That could explain why he's feeling better but still needs some naps a week (the normal would be not naps at all).
I'm saying "crazy guess" because of course we don't have all the information to diagnose a depression and this is not the way it should be done, but mood actually plays an important role in his condition.
And it's also true that excessive daytime sleepiness is caused not just by sleep apnea but by several other diseases/circumstances.
    Thanks for the analysis Nicko!!

If he's "freaking out" he's got others issues. Like central apnea and taping his mouth shut can cure them no problem ☠️
