  • We compare a REAL £325 TOUR AD golf shaft against a FAKE £25 TOUR AD golf shaft at GOLFREPAIRS4U in DERBYSHIRE with CUSTOM FIT specialist SAM SMITH.
    After our recent exposure of golf equipment bought from TEMU, we were very surprised how far FAKE golf equipment had come on, and we openly admitted, most of the gear we purchased could have fooled us!
    Now, all that being said, although the fake gear looks great on the eye, we still don't know how well it performs!
    Today we're starting with a test on a FAKE Tour AD graphite design purchased off ALI EXPRESS for £25! A real Tour AD graphite design costs approximately £325!
    Come and join us at GOLFREPAIRS4U with CUSTOM fit specialist SAM SMITH to find out the truth about FAKE golf shafts...

    wow great vid! im sending off for my "fake " shaft! asap.....£325 v £25 for 1yard difference....no brainer....lets stop saying FAKE...instead lets say a not been RIPPED off shaft which performs almost if not better than the RIP off shaft...no wild hooks no wild slices...in fact u were straight down the middle....u hit 1 bad shot left which skewd the numbers...with the real shaft u hit the same bad shot and took it out and rehit...otherwise the FAKE won hands down......basically we golfers get ripped off by golf manufacturers...£550 for a driver...£500 for a putter.....LETS NOT SAY FAKE .LETS SAY ALMOST AS GOODBUT MUCH FAIRER PRICE...thank gary

    Just watching the fake shaft. Three of the balls went straight down the middle and just about everyone seemed longer, so how are you getting these numbers? The fake shaft seem to perform better

      It's the total distance is less because of the spin. The carry was actually slightly longer with the fake. Wasn't much in it for difference in cost. Wonder about durability though.

    A word about the importance of SWINGWEIGHT. In today's brand agnostic world we buy clubs that may have similar flex and loft when putting our sets together, but, do we check to make sure that the FEEL is the same? Recently I bought a set of older TaylorMade Rescue FCT Hybrids. With the 65 gram Aldila RIP shaft. I put Jumbo Tour Velvet grips on them and then went off to the driving range. I could not make consistent contact with the ball. My swing was all over the place because they were TOO LIGHT. (swingweight about C5 or so). I then bought the Identical clubs in the TP line. (the ONLY difference being the Aldila RIP shaft comes in 85 grams). Problem SOLVED! (D2, even with the jumbo grips). I now own a Swingweight scale.

      I’m so guilty of not giving swing weight enough consideration! I am 100% going back for all my clubs checking! I’ll say more in the video, but im very annoyed with brands who don’t even talk about it.

    Interesting test Gary.....it seems to us the viewer that both shafts worked for you even though the fake felt different 🤔..it does throw up two thoughts though... that with practice we can make any shaft work and second how important it is to get a proper fit for clubs.... I cannot believe how many new golfers won't get "fitted" and then wonder why they can't use the clubs.. you need to give yourself a fighting chance and at least if you get properly fitted then you can't blame the tools... together with a few lessons to show you how to use the clubs will at least hugely benefit you, I believe that one goes with the other..... anyway Gary not letting you get away with it "G E T F I T T E D"

If the real shit wasnt so damn expensive, and prices were reasonable like $250 for a driver, people wouldnt be so enticed by the fakes a d we would virtually eradicate the counterfeit market all together. As a longtime clubmaker and player, I earned two things about swingweight. First, even the top quality brands can have significant variances in the swingweight throughout their iron sets, leading to performance issues/differences. Second, in matching up a club set, I always measure the swingweight with the grips OFF. Grips can vary in weight, thus skewing the result. BTW - did your fitter have a torque measurer? Curious about the variance.

  • @turfinteractionsgolf
    @turfinteractionsgolf 11 месяцев назад +2

    You need a proper fitting. The way you hit that fake shaft makes me think a slightly softer shaft might suit you better anyway. Even though the spin was slightly higher, you hit it generally straighter and with a bit more carry. It was only roll out that made the real one be longer, in wetter conditions you won't get that rollout and a flatter flight is not as advantageous. Plus softer doesn't always mean less stable, some of the high end ladies shafts have very low torque but are extremely soft. Go back to Sam again and test some different flexes from Ladies all the way through to X stiff in some high end shafts but in your own driver head and see where you end up.

    • @garymartingolf

      @@garymartingolf There are enough different heads, lofts, shaft flex, shaft stiffness, swing weights, grips and club length options to be able to get to equipment that gives the right numbers but also the right feel, and the right feel is important, if you don't like how your clubs feel you're never going to feel like you can hit it perfect every time, even if the 'numbers' said you should.

      It wasn’t. It was higher spinning , one yard less in carry, and about ten yards less in total distance. This did flatter the fake, as these numbers would separate more into a wind. Most importantly thought, i was a surprise I got the first three so straight as I felt like I didn’t know where the head was, you can’t show feel with numbers, but if you could, they were miles apart.

I mean seriously, a 1 yard difference in carry ?!?!?!? Dispersion was very close. If you really want to point out possible differences put the shafts in a frequency analyzer, preferably a Mitchell golf Digiflex 2.0. Then robot test the shaft at a club head speed rated for that shaft. Post up dispersion and distance variables. So untill we go down that road I'm going to need that link to purchase these.........

My conclusion is, the shaft is crap, because I wouldn’t sacrifice feel, I’d rather use a stock shaft, but if you like the numbers and don’t care too much about feel, go for it. @@garymartingolf I guess I would agree it's crap if it was 20 yards shorter and 50 feet offline but I just didn't see it.Also for statistics outcome you shouldn't have been able to know which one you had before starting the test. You skew the results of a test by knowing the placebo.

    Looking at how the balls flew, I could not really discern a great deal of difference. You hit both shafts pretty well, and they all ended up very playable. I don't know if a mid to high handicap golfer could really tell the difference. Moreover, as someone here has pointed out, the best test would be double-blind, where no one knows which shaft they are using until the test is over. Perhaps a pro or very low handicap golfer might be able to detect differences, but again the real problem here is bias. You really need to control for that to be sure.

      I agree, if you’re a casual golfer, you can make it work. You’d maybe just order one flex stiffer than normal to give it a stronger tip and less torque.

      @garymartingolf the big question is how long until the fake heads become close to or on par with the genuine ones? I can understand the fake driver heads my never be due to the high quality materials used in the genuine ones but it may be a little different for irons in a few years. It also begs the question? Is most of the price in a golf club just down the brand name?

    Just like most commenters. One go a couple of meters shorter and definitely more consistent for a tenth of the cost and the consensus is dont buy them?
    I'm not sure that there is as much honesty there should be?
    Is it because you guys get them without having to spend money? 200 pound to you is 400 dollars where I live. That's about 700 before tax or about all my spare cash for three to four weeks. = car insurance for 6 months, 3 months electricity or my fuel bill for 3 to 4 weeks. That's a massive saving for a couple of meters!

      @garymartingolf I get that. But you also haven't given credit go the factvthis thing is actually value for money for someone who wanted consistency. Seems this thing was def more consistent than the big dollar spend if what I just watched was correct? I'm not taking a personal shot. Merely making an observation. The best fishing knot breaks consistently at a breaking strain and is the easiest to tie. The best club can be the one that gives consistent distance and accuracy (if it's in the ball park). Sometimes name products are over priced. Sometimes we should call them out? I'm not suggesting it's ethical to pass something off as fake by any means, I'm saying thatbthe b evidence presented didn't reflegtbtge opinion given.

    Since the shafts look identical, it would be perfect to set up a double-anonymized procedure over a few days so that you could gather sufficient data to run statistical tests to see if there would be any significant differences. Just scanning your limited data here, I see everything so close that I am not convinced one stands out as superior. As has been pointed out in other remarks here, you failed to control for your own bias. Since you know which shaft is the most expensive, you may have already concluded that it is superior to the cheaper one. It would help if you found a way to eliminate that bias and let the data speak instead. Throughout the Internet and especially on YT, I see content creators doing these cursory tests, hitting a few shots, and almost always the more expensive brand wins. If your aim is to be scientific then it requires that you use well established procedures and results to be confident in your conclusions.

    • @garymartingolf
      @garymartingolf  8 месяцев назад

      I do like the idea of playing out on the course with the fake shaft and I will be as I’m in the process of building a full bag of fake equipment.
      Iyou watch more of my content, reviews and comparisons, you will soon see there is never ever bias. I’ve quite often praised faked equipment, but in the case of this shaft, the flex, feel and torque was clearly not true to the real version. As we said, the results, they were great, but I think that was more down to my ability to adapt to the softer feel. In conclusion, it wouldn’t play consistent to the feel of all the other clubs in my bag and therefore I couldn’t play that shaft, and I would worry that less skilled golfer would struggle to adapt and they would lose control.
      Anyway, we will see, all this will be tested in the future once we’ve got a full bag setup.

I agree, the data and results aren’t bad, but they don’t compare on feel which I couldn’t get used to. I do agree, maybe someone in regular flex, a softer swinger, wouldn’t feel the torque so much, so for them, it could be better.
