    Throughout high school and my first two years of college, music was a big part of my academic studies. I performed in many different choirs as a baritone vocalist and often had issues with losing my voice during concerts. One time during a choir show, my baritone register completely dropped out, so i jumped a whole octave and sang tenor for the entire 2nd half of the program. It took me three weeks to get my voice back completely.
    After that experience, i started a routine of relaxation and loosening my vocal cords via steam inhalation and drinking herbal tea. To this day, i still keep three boxes of my favorite herbal tea blends on hand so that i can have them ready to go in the colder months. My favorite herbal teas are Traditional Medicinals Throat Coat Lemon Echinacea, Traditional Medicinals Roasted Dandelion Root, and Stash Lemon Ginger. All of the tea that i keep on hand is caffeine-free.

    Coconut water at room temperature can help a lot if you're dry raspy at the gig. Drinking it after a gig before bed will also help your voice recover faster and improve your endurance. I learned this from some of my friends who are professional opera singers and they say it is an absolute necessity during performance season. If you need something for nerves, a tiny bit of brandy mixed in can do the trick.

    People just want to let you all guys know that Green tea Is really good for the vocal chords. I'm a singer and it helps my voice. I strained my voice one time and I had to do a 6 week recovery and I couldn't drink coffee. so i had Green tea instead of the coffee and I got my voice back in the 6 week time period. So stop saying that green tea isn't good for the voice because it is.

    Hey Nicola - I live in the Barossa Valley in South Australia and have been sipping on port for my singing voice and found it really good, but now I have another one.... still port but a port that's produced here in the Barossa called Sable, it's a chocolate port and not fiery like some of our ports and I find I can pitch much better. In fact I really can't sing very well without it. Of course you still have to go easy with it as you don't want to end up drunk! I found your exercises very helpful and I am going to keep doing them to give me better control. Thanks again!

    "The Lady In Red"
    I've never seen you looking so lovely as you did tonight,
    I've never seen you shine so bright,
    I've never seen so many men ask you if you wanted to dance,
    They're looking for a little romance, given half a chance,
    And I have never seen that dress you're wearing,
    Or the highlights in your hair that catch your eyes,
    I have been blind;
    The lady in red is dancing with me, cheek to cheek,
    There's nobody here, it's just you and me,
    It's where I want to be,
    But I hardly know this beauty by my side,
    I'll never forget the way you look tonight;
    I've never seen you looking so gorgeous as you did tonight,
    I've never seen you shine so bright, you were amazing,
    I've never seen so many people want to be there by your side,
    And when you turned to me and smiled, it took my breath away,
    And I have never had such a feeling,
    Such a feeling of complete and utter love, as I do tonight;
    The lady in red is dancing with me, cheek to cheek,
    There's nobody here, it's just you and me,
    It's where I want to be,
    But I hardly know this beauty by my side,
    I'll never forget the way you look tonight;
    I never will forget the way you look tonight...
    The lady in red, the lady in red,
    The lady in red, my lady in red,
    I love you...❤️
    No one's mentioned this very obvious fact often enough; you're a very kind, intelligent, generous, talented, sweet, funny and very lovely lady Nicola, also looking very lovely in red.
    It's definitely your color.😉
    Excellent videos, enjoying all of them, thank you! BTW, I've always brought my own bottled water to gigs (trusted source) and drink them at room temperature, never cold, sometimes poured into a glass with a straw, adding a clean slice of lemon, and drinking regularly throughout the performance, whether thirsty or not. It's always worked best for me, compared
    to anything else I've tried/tested.
    A side note; the great power/pop/rock singer Robin Zander of Cheap Trick insists on always having a hot pot of coffee in his dressing room before their gigs - it's been in the band's technical rider for many years. Proving once again there's usually an exception to the 'rules', as coffee is known to dry out the throat. Stick to what works for you individually.

    I'm not being sarcastic here, but I've tried all the "recommended" pre-drinks "Throat Coat, "Tea "w/honey", "etc. I sing Sinatra and what works best for me is (believe it or not) is a highball with bourbon..."A" highball (not several.) My choice is two fingers of Jim Beam, three splashes of mineral water, and a Maraschino cherry. Maybe it's psycho-suggestive, because Frank drank the same thing only with Jack Daniels (I find the Jack a bit too sweet.) Good luck everyone, Nicola has good recommendations; especially, if you do not partake. But the most significant thing that affects us (me) is nerves, that's probably why the Bourbon works : ).

    Yes, I have a lot of phlegm production, even when I’m not singing I can feel more crud developing if I have any cow’s milk. I’m lactose intolerant anyway so it’s best to avoid that. I learned the hard way that cold water is a baaaad idea! I didn’t know coffee was bad. If I can’t get hold of water before singing, I have grabbed some hot decaf coffee-no milk, only creamer-and that seemed to help. I did not know peppermint tea was good for singers. I love mint tea anyway! I will have to carry it with me, and drink it more often otherwise.Thank You!

    I like your accent, you definitely know what you are talking about. I am a solo performer, and I can tell you from personal experience that peppermint tea is by far the best thing that you can use before and during performances. Also, a vertical mesh nebulizer that delivers pharmaceutical grade Saline to the dry and swollen vocal cords, it's better than Steam and is a big help. If you could see my set lists you would see the kind of torture that I put myself through singing in standard a440 tuning and one half step down if it was recorded in that tuning. In my personal opinion which isn't worth very much I would say that if your singing is not taking a toll on your voice, then you are using improper technique. If you are singing cover tunes then you should adapt your voice to the song, not the song to your voice. If you can't then don't do it.

    i always drink coffee in the morning, if i dont i cant sing for crud, good coffee relaxes all my muscles and makes me feel awake and aware, of course i dont drink coffee while im belting like a demon.... cuz it can dehydrate you so i drink a good amount of coffee in the morning wake up stretch around go for a walk, cleaning always helps me feel up to some serious belting, because a clean space motivates me, then i make my own chamomile, licorice root tea have been doing it for years didnt even realize kt was helping my singing always just felt smart for brewing it, i was pretty shocked, also i knew that about green tea i think its the way the human body handles caffeinated teas i think on occasion it handles it like water because its so much water and the caffeine gets processed the way your body would process water, how i came to the conclusion is like so, about 10 years ago when i was growing up i used to get chronic leg pains and everyone told me it was growing pains etc, so most of my life i had to deal with random leg pains, about 4 years ago i decided to start drinking teas on a daily basis, cuz i thought it would help my singing, after about of month or two of drinking tea my ancient leg pains started coming back, and i always deduce the reason for things like this in my life by asking myself what did i do differently that i wasnt doing before the pain. so the answer this time was i started drinking tea. but for years i was drinking mint tea and chamomile tea on and off, not religiously, so i tested it. i stopped drinking tea altogether. two weeks later the pain was completely gone no knee pains no pain anywhere, felt great. so i brewed up a cup of green tea "caffeinated", felt good for about two days, then my legs started hurting.
    hmm i was like weird, so i waited another two weeks for the pain to go away completely and brewed another cup of tea this time, it was a black tea also caffeinated, and about two days later bam, hurt like crazy, so i did this over and over for about a year, and learned that caffeinated tea confuses my body, making my body think its straight water, then processes it like straight water, and somewhere in my knees and legs the caffeine literally builds up and blocks some form of body communication flow.... or blood or something because thats what it feels like. coffee doesn't do that, it seems my body can identify coffee diferently than water especially observable by the fact that when i drink it it dehydrates me a little. so advice: do not drink caffeinated teas because they are notorious for causing chronic pains, drink coffee in the morning and follow this beautiful ladies video. thanks for reading take care and rock on.

    I find milk terrible, but usually when I've done open mic I accepted coffees as a thank you instead of beer etc. Would alcohol be better than coffee - given it doesn't have much milk in it (normally)? Also, what about ginger beer or just ginger water? or lemon water? lemon, honey, ginger? honey, pepper? I read chocolate can clear things, but I guess you would go for one without dairy in it. :)

    some people vocals work differently though some can drink cold water and still be able to sing comfortably and warm up their voice even though cold drinks are not usually good for the voice but some people have that ability but i say honey tea or peppermint tea are good drinks for your vocal muscles also

    Wow! I drink green tea before singing everyday and have been noticing dry, cracky vocals lately. I've noticed orange juice is very harmful as well. I'm curious to see if cutting out green tea and switching to a peppermint tea will help!

    What’s the 3rd drink on the best drink list? Can you spell it? The accent is making it hard for me to understand. Sounds like “Port” is it a wine or what? And does the alcohol in it dry your vocal cords? I must say I’m glad your addressing this it’s been on my mind!!

    Thank you so much! I'll have to test it on my system; but having some kind of a compass is extremely valuable. I'll stay away from seltzer and just go with water now. Keto will keep me away from port ;{. Took me awhile to realize Scotch whiskey doesn't work(guess I just like it). I'll try brandy as I like that too. Not many options with keto.

    Actually, white wine is the prescribed drink for singers in old europe, or certain parts, at least. They will only serve the singer white wine, in certain European countries... Just saying... I have used this a jam booze and I do find that it is one of the best... I agree with milk, green tea, fizzy drinks as well, as I've sung on them all!
    I drink Throat Coat, by Traditional Medical... not cheap.. includes peppermint and licorice teas... Port wine? Red.. interesting... I will def try!

    Thank you for advices, have to admit that I haven't heard fkr half of these good for singers drink :)
    But some things depends from person to person I guess,
    Any sort of alcohol I tried is the worst dring for me, most of the time I lost voice for at least 3,4 days. Cold drinks 2,3 dayes. Fizzy max two days, most of the time after fizzy drinks I just need good sleep to recover my voice. Both cold and fizzy add rock rhasp but that can't be heathly I guess. Coffee middle voice sounds better and more comprrsed,upper register like blocked, but for some reason coffee also protects my voice, so I find it useful when I am not singing. Milk I haven't notticed any difference, maybe bit sore thorat, but def. not the worst option for me. Sour juices like lemonade or oragngade are way worse thing for me.
    I am male (tenor).

    Thanks for the tips! If I may add: tea and wine (especially red) are drying on the throat due to tanins (tanins are astringents, so they dry the mouth). Can you tell me why warm tea is better than cold water? I figure the cold water would help with the inflammation, overusing the muscle and the vocal cords... What do you think?

    Peppermint could actually be very bad. Peppermint relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter, which can lead to acid reflux, which is horrible for the voice
