    When using AMD RDNA2 (i.e. Steam Deck), make sure to get Mesa fixes for mesh shaders. Current mesa, will show many textures incorrectly (rocks, faces, etc), but with a patch, it will fix it. Do not disable mesh shaders in d3dvk, as performance will drop a lot (like -50%).
    But even then, it probably is not worth it to run at like 25 fps.
    It is impressive still that is runs it so well considering the TDP and other limitations.

    To be honest I would have not expected games releasing today or tomorrow to be playable on current handhelds. Nothing unfortunate here in my opinion regarding the actual idea of the handhelds.

    I will be streaming/remote playing this from my series x to my steam deck and should still get 1080p/60fps this way.

    This is why fsr3 frame gen is needed. 17~23 fps is good enough for me i have played with worse fps, i don't expect igpu to play this well
    Futute handheld pc should have discrete gpu chips built in

    • @WinDeckTech
      @WinDeckTech  9 месяцев назад

      The problem with frame gen is the input latency. If you were trying to use frame gen on something at 20-30 fps you will have a very, laggy game. As well there would be numerous visual artifacts happening.
      The tech is meant to boost from a base of 50-60 for best results.

    Definitely recommend Digital Foundries recommended PC settings for use with the Ally +xg 3080. Equals PS5 and locks at 60fps/1440p dlss quality. I'm on official ally drivers, no 7840 stuff installed. Should be noted that you should optimize your Nvidea control panel. Stock settings suck.

      Nice! Glad to hear!
      I don't typically let nvidia control the games settings etc. I'll just set it to a preset and compare one to one. But yeah, definitely would recommend the df settings as well!

    RAM isn't the issue on the Steam Deck here.

  • @zork219

    Dude, you know this is literally the first game with mesh shaders? No wonder handhelds struggle. I believe that if game companies optimise their games for Switch. They can surely optimise AAA titles for handheld gaming (if there's money to be made). As to the amount of ram I agree that 32gb is the future standard

    Debating on wether to buy steam OLED or ally. Would you still recommend the ally vs new deck?

    • @WinDeckTech
      @WinDeckTech  9 месяцев назад +1

      That is a tough question.
      I'm sure for a lot it is an easy choice or no brainer.
      However, to be able to recommend one over the other, I always ask if you have a dedicated gaming set up already. Mainly a PC, but a latest gen console could count as well.
      I ask this because if you already have a way to play the latest and greatest AAA games, comfortably, then I would suggest the Deck.
      1) it is cheaper than the ROG Ally no matter which version you pick. However, I would not personally recommend the 1tb option due to the anti glare etching. This can make the image appear more, dull at times. For OLED display, absolutely go glossy for the best picture quality.
      2) it is an excellent companion device to a dedicated gaming rig. You can play games either locally and if they can't run on the deck then you can stream from a PC that can.
      3) without having seen the OLED screen in person, but having owned many OLED displays. The new OLED display on the deck should be absolutely killer. If you haven't experienced OLED HDR, you are in for an absolute treat.
      Points for the Ally
      1) it is more versatile in what it can run. It is more powerful, hands down. But that comes at the cost of battery life. However, it also allows you to be plugged in and pull higher wattages, unlike the deck.
      2) for better or worse, you have the xg mobile GPU option, if you planned on only having an ally. The only egpu I can recommend is the 6850, unless you can get the 3080 within $100 of the 6850.
      3) the screen on the ally is really good, it gets plenty bright and is crisp enough for my liking (just felt I should say that the ROG screen isn't immediately crap because it's not OLED)
      4) despite the rocky start and broken SD card readers, it does appear as though Asus is listening and adapting to requests from the community.
      However, SteamOS is simply better or more suited to the handheld style, simply because it was built specifically for the steam deck and various valve products. But, to bring it back as a plus towards the ally, the ally runs windows and can play games like destiny 2 and cod. I would hope for this to change at some point but as of right now, that's the rub.
      Ultimately in my use case if I wasn't doing this channel and had only one handheld, it likely would be the Steam Deck. Because I have a gaming rig to play all of the heavy duty games on and then I can play lighter games leisurely on the deck.
      If I had the Steam Deck LCD (I have 3) I would sell it to fund the purchase of a steam deck OLED.
      I would take advantage of buying the cheaper model (512gb) OLED and either use SD cards or buy a larger 2tb SSD.
      I don't think I personally would go for a windows handheld, again if I were to have only one device. Because I don't *need* the windows functionality to play cod or destiny 2 on the go as well I don't *need* the increase in power because if I couldn't run a new game on the steam deck, I would play it on my desktop.
      Hope that helps somewhat!

      @@WinDeckTech Thank you so much for the detailed response.
      It is kind of what I was afraid of regarding the ally as I already have a gaming rig (3D artist so top graphic cards for job etc).
      I'm afraid streaming to deck using moonlight is gonna gonna be a better experience than rog ally running those AAA games in the end which is really holding me back.
      However i was also pretty interested in the ally to emulate switch games on the go. Mainly the most demanding ones actually, ToTk, xenoblade 3+DLC, astral chain.
      From what i've seen xenoblade 3 is a nogo on steam deck, same for astral chain. ToTk is a pain to set up to never truly reach stable 30...
      If the ally was running those very well it'd be big for me, but then again it's hard to find videos regarding how those runs today on the ally so it's kinda hit or miss.
      Just wish there was a more powerful deck at the end of the day... Even sacrificing some battery life I wouldn't mind.

  • @TorstenSimon

    Since the game runs on the series s I guess the issue is rather limited schalability on PC or in case of the Ally, all the Windows Background crap eating up the memory.

      Honestly the biggest L here is the lack of ram on the systems, imo.
      Sure it's not amazing on the 7840u with 32gb. But it is much more playable than the Ally and absolutely better than the steam deck

    People said at first that Steam Deck will never be able to even launch Alan Wake 2 because of the specs, and yet here we are.
    Optimization is key, even with new technology. Alan Wake even on top machines is not very optimized, so there always room for improvement.

    • @WinDeckTech
      @WinDeckTech  9 месяцев назад +3

      It is pretty well optimized I would say. This is just the absolute limits of what the deck can do. This game will likely forever remain unplayable/inconsistent on the deck. Not to mention the texture issues.

    I am thinking in doing the 32 gb mod to the ally but after using smokeless and tighten the ram, it runs much smoother. I will also use the device to stream from my desktop as the new moonlight update improved image quality a lot! would you do a vid from the 32 gb mod with 7500mhz ram and that would be awesome for the channel!

      @WinDeckTech  9 месяцев назад +1

      I had looked into the 32 gb mod for the Ally and from what I could tell, it cost about 300 (or more) USD just for the service, not including shipping.
      I have done electrical soldering in the past, but nothing to that level.
      IMO it is not/would not be worth it.
      For that price, you are much better off going with a device that has 32gb supported natively.
      My advice would be to wait for a Z1E device with 32gb of fast ram from a name brand manufacturer (dell, gigabyte, MSI etc) whoever makes one first. Unless you are comfortable/familiar with buying a Chinese, not so name brand (globally) company.

    • @WinDeckTech
      @WinDeckTech  9 месяцев назад

      Yeah it is a different beast with a potentially, radically different buyer.
      Steam deck is an amazing companion console to your PC I would say.
      You absolutely can have just the steam deck as a gaming console and have a great time. But I think it shines when complimenting a desktop. Steam stream heavy duty games or play them locally at reduced settings. Having the steam deck initially, before getting into all this, it really helped me beat out some of my backlog as I could continue paying the games on my couch etc.
      The ally I see more as an all in one gaming device. With the ability to change your tdp at will and have more power when docked. On top of the ridiculous xg mobile.. you can very comfortably get by with just the ally depending on your set up.
      But, each have their cons. The steam deck being less powerful but the ally being more power hungry etc.
      I would say sell your ally and switch back to a deck, or hang tight for new refreshes, and likely new designs and manufacturers in the new year.
      Alienware, MSI, etc.
