    This is the best explanation of GEDmatch's One-to-One comparison that I've ever seen. Thanks for sharing your expertise!

    Thanks! I understood enough of this to get on with, but I did learn a lot! I need to go back and explore more.

    Thank you for that explanation Andy, I've been trying to find an adopted friends parents for over 12 months (all we have is the mother's name) and having hit brick wall after brick wall hopefully Gedmatch may help break them down.

    Thank you, Andy! I'm trying to determine family of a 2nd gt grandfather b c 1831. I've a cluster of matches- right time, right place- lots of pedigree collapse, intermarriage among the 4 families . This encourages me to look at some who are also on gedmatch - especially starting from one with only the one strip of 26cM- be nice to confirm the identity of one family ! Thank you!

    What is MRCA and how does all of us tell us how we are related. I was hoping to not use multiple sites to figure that out. This is so complicated.

    Why does it show green lines but no matching cM?

    What I don't understand is why are the DNA sites so very much different. I have uploaded Ancestry, and ftdna too gedmatch. But several different people has said those two kits can not be both mine. Because they are too much different apart. I tried uploading my 23 and me but can't figure it out yet. Why are the testing sites so different. And if DNA, is not changing why are there different matches on both Ancestry and ftdna? And they tested on both sites but we don't match.

      @ValorieZimmerman 2 года назад +1

      All the testing companies use different chips in their testing, which means different SNPs. That is why there is a Tier 1 tool to create a "super kit" that takes all of your kits, and all of the SNPs, and makes one kit out of it. That's the one I usually use now especially for one to one matches.

    Do these segments ever move or change, or segments always change.

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  2 года назад

      Segments are shared DNA. They can't move. But in succeeding generations they can be passed on unchanged, cut into a smaller segment, or not be passed on at all.

    Have you got a video to help with matches where you don’t know who the different fathers are? I’m struggling to understand :(

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics

      Not specifically, but I strive to talk about techniques in my DNA Q&A live streams. If you want to have this question answered, send it to www.familyhistoryfanatics.com/contact and say, "Question for next DNA live show"
      Give me more details that what you shared above for your question and I'll see what I can do.

    So, if I am understanding this correctly two kits that share some matches are somehow related?

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  Год назад

      Depending on how much they share, yes. When two kits share more than 7 cMs, you could figure out how they are related. The larger the amount of shared cMs, the more closely related they likely are.

    Question: Where on GEDmatch do you see that you share 74% of your DNA with your brother?

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  2 года назад +1

      If I misspoke, then what I should have said is I share 74% of SNPs, you can see that down at the bottom of the page.

      My wife can relate to your frustration. She suggests you do what she has done and make note of the concepts you don't understand and search for supplemental videos to understand the terminology.
      The One-to-One Tool is for intermediate and advanced genetic genealogists who understand the terminology.
      I hope this doesn't quash your enthusiasm but rather redirects you back to some genetic genealogy fundamentals and then come back and use this tool. For those who have done that, it has been helpful.
      Best of luck.

      @@FamilyHistoryFanatics I found a few of the criticisms quite unfair. This video is one in a long line that builds up your knowledge incrementally. If you don't understand concepts or terms then the topic is too advanced for you. You need to find your own level and it is a bit rich to expect Andy Lee to reprise basic concepts each video.

    This guy has to be the worst educator I have ever come across - he is not capable of actually engaging with his audience. I taught very technical coding and security concepts to people at all levels and I made sure that they 'understood' the meaning of those ideas. Here this guy makes no attempt to match this tool's data to what the tool is trying to tell people - complete fail.

    Way over my head…..I need to watch again…….What is a snip???????? You don’t really explain this in any of your videos.
