    Howdy Andy! Thank you very much for this series of videos on using the GEDmatch tools, interpreting the results and especially on excellent strategies for finding relatives, using techniques like triangulation with cross-matching. My goal is to find matches with family trees posted here or in Ancestry that will help me to decide which branch of several to further research to discover my third great grandparents who lived in County Cork Ireland. You’ve mentioned that you’re interested in viewers’ opinions on which new videos to make. If you were to make a series of videos, that follow that process using an example family, that may help some users make better use of GEDmatch. It would be like a continuation of your videos on which order to follow when using the GEDmatch tools. I’m really enjoying all of the Tier 1 tools thanks to your helpful videos. Keep up the great work! 😊🇨🇦

      Cool. That's a great idea. I'll add it to my list. It might take a little while to make because folks want me to update my GEDmatch Tutorials first and also discuss the other genetic genealogy platforms. But, perhaps I could make this a channel membership video sooner than a free video. We'll see.

    Crucial question: How do I find out who in the matching segment group has a GEDcom? Is there a quick way or do I have to enter the individuals individually in the user name, etc link? Thanks as always for these great videos, Andy!

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  2 года назад

      Unless GEDmatch has made an update, there's isn't a quick way to see who has a tree. You have to use the User Look Up Tool. ruclips.net/video/1QMQ9EgJcK0/видео.html
      However, if you'll make a spreadsheet from these results, you'll begin to notice other reports that include the notation that people have a family tree. So, then you can just make a mark on your spreadsheet. That's a nerdy way to do it. But, it's what I do to piece together many different pieces of data.

      @@FamilyHistoryFanatics Thanks, Andy. Here's a sequence of what I've finally figured out:
      1. run the segment search tool;
      2. tic the boxes of the triangulated groups one wishes to examine;
      3. click "Multikit Analysis;"
      4. click on "Visualization Options;"
      5. click "GEDCOMS" on the ribbon that shows;
      6. click "Find Matching GEDCOMS."
      Thanks for your great videos. You do more in 10 minutes to explain a topic than many take an hour to explain. Any you do it better!

    Does the Ancestor Projects search allow comparing an outside kit to the project members? Usually I do this with Multi-Kit, but this may be better.

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  5 лет назад

      No, it does not, although you can always manually enter the kit numbers in if you would like once you are part of a project. For project administrators, when someone requests to join, we can do a comparison of their kit against the project to verify that they have some matches.

    I'm trying to solve the mystery of my Chinese Dai on Chromosome 8, from 23&me and also on other sites like GEDmatch. So, if I run this tool, to find matches who will have a Chinese ancestor, will it then be a indicator that I too share that same ancestor from China?

  • @m27238

    thank you for the video, but what is the practical meaning of shared segments?

    • @ValorieZimmerman
      @ValorieZimmerman 2 года назад +1

      Every segment we share with a match, at least if it is over, say 15 cM, came from a common ancestor. The larger the segment, in general, the closer the match relationship.

    how do we determine some admixture related to the segments of matches (cm/dna).... thats the moneyshot question which makes it interesting

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  4 года назад

      Only 23andMe (and the GEDmatch admixture) show you the admixture along each chromosome.

    You have a good grasp of this stuff can you explain to me why gedmatch generates more matches for my V5 data vs my old ancestry file some matches dont match either kit is this a glitch or something..please help

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  5 лет назад +1

      Each kit has a different set of SNPs. Some of them are more useful for matching. With the V5 there is less overlap so you would likely see matches increase because the differences (no match) may be contained in the SNPs that weren't tested.

      Not one called GEDmatch for Dummies, but I do have a lot of basic videos. GEDmatch links to many of them on their website so if you are at a specific tool and there is a video link it probably goes to our video.

    All I want to know is what is the significance of the asterisk in the name column in the matching segment report?

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  2 года назад

      There are two possibilities. First, it could mean the name is an alias. The second means that the kit could be managed by someone who matches both. Use the USER look up tool and you'll figure out which is which. ruclips.net/video/1QMQ9EgJcK0/видео.html

    If you share 2 segments with a DNA match on two different chromosomes, does that mean yous share 2 different ancestors? Thanks :)

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  5 лет назад +1

      No, more likely you both inherited the same segments from a single common ancestor.
