After watching a good many of your videos I got the idea to capitalize on the Tempest Cleric features in a new build. I call it the Blue Shell or Thortle, a mixture of high burst damage and battlefield control. I want to see how you would rearrange or streamline the features using 6 levels of Tempest Cleric, 1 level of Hexblade Warlock, and 13 levels of sorcerer. The focus is to use Transmute Spell Meta Magic from the Sorcerer, Thunderous Strike from the Cleric, and push creatures around, into, and through spell effects, force your enemies to use up their movment, or in a moment of desperation, vaporize a foe with maximum damage. Notable interactions include: Doubling up on damage from Spirite Guardians by pushing enemies back out and moving over them, transmuting Wall of Fire into lightning damage to create an electric barrier enemies have a hard time moving through, transmuting Ashardalons Stride to rearrange enemies into more optimum AoE locations (or existing spell effects), transmuting Booming Blade to both push back enemies but also penalize their movment speed with the second instance of damage, and finally maximize the damage from Chain Lightning or Cone of Cold. Feats to be taken would include Great Weapon Master (Maul), Meta Magic Adept, and optionally Elemental Adapt (Lightning). The Tortle race is used to boost the front line potential and give advantage on concentration saving throws when needed via the shell defence ability. If love to see you do a video or just hear your thoughts on it.

Ha ha - I really do! Admittedly, I only try to read *every* comment for the first 12 hours or so after a vid goes live, and after that, I just read whatever the RUclips algorithm decides to "highlight" for me. :)
Been playing a Chronology Wizard in Out of the Abyss recently (Level 6 atm) and I've been having a blast. What you picked up is interesting. I went Pallid Elf (also from Wildemount) and a first level dip in Knowledge Cleric. 2 expertise skills, advantage on 2 more, free Invisibility and Sleep, a better Charisma save because I dumped Charisma, medium armor and shield. Kinda got a glut of close blast spells but oh boy when they work, they work.
Colby, I love you man, but if you really want crusader's mantle on a wizard by level 17... Stay wizard and cast wish. It's a terrible use of wish, granted, but at least you got the option of being a wizard
Regarding Countercharm being bad: I have been playing this game for some time now, and I've only seen Countercharm be used to great effect once. It happened in our 3-year long (so far) campaign. We had our bard, originaly born an elf and now reincarnated as a female white dragonborn, pull out her lute and preemptively play a soothing melody to countercharm the alluring song of an imprisoned angel we were hearing during our night rest in a god forsaken marsh (think of it as a "siren's song" kind of situation). Outside this one very specific occasion, yeah, it has been a total waste of a feat.
Crusaders mantle finally appears! I've been wanting to see you use this spell ever since the subscriber special when treantmonk played the summoner and you didn't caster it when he had 16 velociraptors
@@snazzyfeathers in the one shot Colby was playing a paladin and treant monk was playing a wizard multiclass summoner to conjure animals tons of velociraptors, as you can see from the end of this video d4s add up real quick when you're making dozens of attacks
@@ryanscanlon2151 Ahhh. 1d4 seems like not a bunch of damage and something I wouldn't normally use (at the table I play at there's generally only 4 players and none play summoners) but teaming up with a shepherd druid would work out really well I reckon
Quite cool build Colby. What i would do differently is take Dissonant Whispers instead of Hex spell (when choosing Fey Touched). That would potencialy give "opportunity attack" from all of our animated objects. Plus if creature save againts Desintegrate, it takes 0 dmg, and in case of DW it would take at least half.
I love watching all of your builds Colby, not only are the builds quite impressive mathematically, but your personality and calmness are just relaxing to listen to after a stressful day. I've pretty much watched all of your builds and I haven't even played a game of DnD yet Lmao.
I want to see an Order of Scribes build sometime! They can do some fun things with changing damage types on spells, casting spells from their sentient spellbook familiar, and can still also have a familiar. I'm curious how much damage you could do without being in the room, lol. It would probably have to be a nova build though, since you can only cast from your awakened spellbook a certain number of times per day.
I'm trying level one dip in Artificer into Scribe Wizard leaning on the Bugbear damage racial. I can thank Treantmonk for inspiring me down this path of evil. Malvagrah is going to be much much fun for me. His judging gaze and well practiced smile offers a charming tone as he speaks, "Doing good things makes me feel good. The emphasis is on the word me~"
DM: The Adult Dragon has Frightful Presence. Please make Wisdom save DC19 for your animated objects, because they are considered as creatures. Oh wait, they have wisdom of 3(-4), so they are 100% failed the save, will become frightened, and cannot move close to the dragon at all. 🤣🤣🤣
There's definitely ways to counter spells like animate objects. Frightened/charmed condition, aoe effects, and even dispel magic. It's still a fun spell that's both flavorful and effective though. Unfortunately mass "summoning" spells (Conjure animals, woodland beings, etc) are limited to at most 4 creatures at the table I play at, but they're significantly less broken and easier to play at the table...so it evens out.
@@darkestlight660 1)The animate objects will have their own initiative order, or their turn after the caster (up to DM), but right after the caster's turn, the dragon can use legendary actions Wing Attack to kill most the animate objects if they are on top or close to the dragon. 2) They still need to make the Frightful Presence WIS save. By RAW "Each creature of the dragon's choice that is within 120 ft. of the dragon and aware of it must succeed on a DC 19 Wisdom saving throw..."
There's lots of great Wizard multiclasses, they just all involve a small dip of Wizard, mostly Wizard and a small dip of something else, or a Bladesinger build.
Inspired by your videos I theory crafted a build around Jim's magic missile & Spirit shroud! I need to know though, how do you calculate Numbers? It uses divination & elven accuracy to mitigate the potential for blowback and I have no idea how to calculate 16 potential attacks.
Love time wizards. Built one out to 10th level using Herengon (the white rabbit), and have a +15 to initiative, which allows for all kinds of shenanigans with the spell and feature choices mentioned here. Love this channel!
I recently made a build that uses the chronurgies 14th level abilty on repeat by using greater restotation (gotten from a 1 level dip into warlock) I thought it would be fun if their patron is actually just them from the future!
So Colby, I got inspired by your videos on an Armorer tank, and I thought about combining it with Psi Warrior, Abjuration Wizard and Armor of Agathys. Everything scales off of one stat, and this should make Armor of Agathys last absurdly long. An alternative thought was also War Mage to significantly improve saving throws, there's got to be a build hiding somewhere in there with War mage lol...
I love how you went wizard mostly and propped it up with Bard. It's about time someone spoke the truth. Wizards are passe, Bards are the OP fotm now!!!🤣
When you take Fey touched, wouldn't Bless be better for concentration? I **think** it should be better DPR, and you get to buff allies alongside the other great benefits.
Hello Colby I am once again coming to you with a unheard of strategy that I believe can hold great merit. The “Cordon of Arrows” spell is extremely powerful in that it is a concentration less spell that lasts 8 hours and deals damage to a creature whenever they enter its area of effect or end its turn inside. With simple movement manipulation you can easily take advantage of the damage, so the only reason I can fathom that it’s not used in conjunction with spike growth is that it’s a ranger spell. But the swarm ranger exists as well as the Swarmkeeper Ranger exists with built in 15’ push at 3rd level. So all you need is a 5 level ranger dip for both spells and multi attack. How would you optimize this build? Perhaps a fighter dip for double spell set up round? Warlock+Sorcerer dips for bonus action Eldritch blast push pulls? I’m very curious
Ideally it would be a trapper build where you could take advantage of the duration of both spell allowing you to cast them ahead of combat. Perhaps you are a 3rd level warlock who can cast 2 cordons than short rest before the fight. That would also scale nicely with upcasting the spell at later levels of warlock.
Ah, the Time Wizard - master of the wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff, proud owner of Police Box flavoured extradimensional spaces, and wielder of the handy dandy Sonic Screwdriver spell focus.
Go diviner wizard 17 get the feat adept metamagic then end with 3 sorcerer. You get 9 level spells from wizard, full caster slots and 5 metamagics to finally get heighten magic. Combine that disadvantage with portents and you will make enemies burn legendary saves like crazy.
this build should come with a disclaimer of something like "No Tardis's or Timelord's was harmed or regenerated during the construction of this build'"
Seriously Cody! With a good DM, an illusionist has Illusory Reality, and that feature gets crazy creative! For your little spreadsheets, yeah, it won’t look great… But, at the table, the illusionist is amazing! The best Chronurgy wizard I ever built uses a few levels of warlock (genie) to really get nuts with concentration effects (spell bottles, familiars, your genie vessel, glyph of warding, etc.). So yeah, you can make VERY powerful wizard multiclasses, even where intelligence is not the secondary classes big stat.
I know kobold synergizes with your attack strategy, but I probably would have gone tortle (for built in AC) or glitchling (adding a nice "clockwork" theme to the time magic).
May I suggest building a character around the Dhampir Sword bard slashing flourish leading to enhanced checks? How much piercing damage can you do on a single hit, then apply to every enemy in range, then add that number to your next attack roll or skill check (It gets silly)
It's obvious, isn't it? The mighty wizard from history that our kobold friend is obsessing over? Who could it be but Pun Pun, the omnipotent kobold build from 3.5?
@d4: D&D Deep Dive so, I'm relatively new to D&D.. only played a few sessions in the 90s. And from watching your videos, I get a sense that you've played WoW in the past. So, I was wondering if there's a build that could represent something like the Affliction Warlock? I'm not really familiar with all the spells, but I don't see many DoTs. Is there such a build? And I don't mean a "return damage" build. Thanks! Oh, and the first character I plan on playing is the Alteration Tank.
This is so cool!! I’d love to see something with a horizon walker. The flavour looks awesome but I think it’s very situational so it might be a challenge to optimise
I really like this build, but one thing that worries me is if a DM would actually consider animated objects as "allies." RAW it's not necessarily clear so it's up to the DM and if they say no, well then there goes the Draconic Cry advantage and that crazy damage bump from Crusader's Mantle. Combine this with allowing the attacks to be considered magical and not requiring extra bonus actions to command them to attack other targets, and you're asking the DM to bend a lot of rules in your favor.
Lore Bard 6 for Tiny Servant and Crusader's Mantle, then Sorcerer for extended spell? at Level 17, you can summon 96 tiny servants extended spell before a long rest. each does 1d4+3, plus 1d4 from crusader's mantle, with a +5 to hit thats 600 damage against AC10 EDIT: Lunar Sorcerer meant you don't even need to pay sorcery points for extended spell which should take you over 100 summons, peace cleric 1 to increase to hit, and you can switch to Stinking Cloud to give advantage and trap them. Even if they try to move, they have to choose between disengage and rough terrain (though minions) which will keep them from actually getting out in one turn, or dashing and proccing ungodly numbers of opportunity attacks. 2 levels sheperd druid could give temp HP as well. Keep them all in a bag of holding and even AOE won't matter because you can just dump them out 20 at a time.
So, I’m a cis, white, straight American man… but dude, you’re putting SOOOO much pressure on yourself. I get the “don’t want to die alone” part, but you’re a good looking dude with real life skills to being to a relationship: 1) You cook *well* (I mean, it looks good anyway) 2) You have a sizable RUclips following and do/will make a decent living from it 3) You are reflective enough to hopefully bounce back from bad choices or even avoid them in the first place 4) You seem to understand your own interior dynamics enough to possibly have the judgement to recognize healthy or I healthy ones in a partner 5) You seem to be a clear communicator (at least in video form, if not in real-time). That’s HUUUUUUUUUGE. You probably already have any number of fans thirsting for you, but you bring a stack of positive stuff to the party. You just need to make sure you humbly remember that about yourself, and look for a partner you vibe with who also brings a bunch of good stuff to the party, too. But, no, don’t be like the KDRAMAS. I don’t watch them necessarily (so II’m not slamming anybody’s tastes) but real-life drama isn’t as fun to live through as it is to watch from a distance. Train wrecks are only fascinating when the blood on the tracks doesn’t belong to your or your loved ones.
Colby: "Wizard class levels might be my least of any class, I wonder why?" Also Colby in what seems like every wizard video before this one: "I'm making a wizard! We're going to start by taking 2 levels of fighter, then 3 levels of paladin, and then 2 level of warlock and by level 10 we're finally getting second level wizard spells!". :P It's really nice to have one that's straight Wizard. Personally I can't stand delaying spell levels. It's tolerable if it's 2 full-caster classes and just a small dip, but going into a non-caster feels so bad, even 1 level. Being level 5 and not having 3rd level spells feels so bad. Especially when how many games don't get much higher. I really want my 3rd level spells at 5, not later.
Usually I like or at least understand the build decisions you make, but in this case, I think that six levels of Lore Bard just to get Magical Secrets is a big mistake. Instead, you should stay in Wizard to get Wish, which is far better. With Wish, you would first prepare for your adventure in advance by casting Simulacrum, gaining a copy of yourself who can also maintain concentration, and who can summon a familiar, and give its familiar an Arcane Abeyance bead. Now you can have four concentration spells going simultaneously! If you really want to set up Crusader's Mantle for your burst round, you can use Wish for that as well (although you can't use the bead for that, unfortunately.) So what do we keep in the two beads? We could continue to have Slow in one, if you like, but the other should have Conjure Minor Elementals, which only takes an action to release from the bead, and don't require any action to command. You can get eight smoke mephits, whose measly +4 to hit will be improved by the Slow spell and the advantage, and whose 1d4+2 damage will be improved by Crusader's Mantle. Plus they can take turns trying to blind your enemy. In the meantime, the Simulacrum can have Animate Objects going, and you can cast Disintegrate twice during the nova round, no Action Surge required. Even better, drop Crusader's Mantle, which probably does less for you now with your 9th-level slot than a second upcast Animate Objects would. Shouldn't you have a Paladin in the party, anyway? In any event, you can get all this without losing access to level 7-9 spells or the extra ASI (Warcaster?), while sacrificing relatively little.
Imagine if for wizard you could muti-subclass. Make a divination wizard, grab Portent. Now change you major and study Chronurgy and grab temporal shift and other 2nd lvl feature. Finally drop out again and join the school of Illusion for the rest while picking up enchantment spells Now you are fate itself! You dwell just beyond the senses of the mortals around you, casting your judgment, making anything in your path go your way. Life or death, fortune and favor all yours to decide!
Having played a lot of wizards in 5e yeah they start to feel samey in their play style after a while. They get a lot of spells but usually it's the spells that make the play style and not the class features. There are a few exceptions but they mostly play kinda the same until higher levels.
So many time you state that lvl 10 is at the end of a characters career. Probably the biggest thing I miss about 3.5 is the Epic level gameplay. We had multiple campaigns that STARTED as level 19-20. Really amazing stuff that has truly been missing since then. Just my two cents. Love your builds.
I'm running something similar! I have a high elf 4th lvl chronurgy wizard + 4th lvl arcane trickster in my current campaign. I've built him to be a ranged support rouge. Making good mileage of low level spells like silvery barbs and chronal shift. Stacking non conc buffs like gift of alacrity and longstrider on my party. Having the rouge survivability and skills means I can keep out of danger myself and let my party focus on taking/dealing damage.
One minor comment: at around 29 minutes when discussing the 'command' to give, use 'kill' instead of 'attack' since the order only lasts until it is complete... ie: until they ATTACK the enemy. For round-after-round fire-and-forget, you need to give it a command that doesn't end each time, so "kill".
I would like to see a new sustained damage build artificer. You used artillerist before. Any thoughts on a similar build using battlesmith? Two attacks, take a 2 lvl dip into war wizard early on for spell slots, cantrips, and damage spells. Give a spell storing ring to a homunculus with standing orders to pepper enemies with chromatic orb or cure wounds on allies, while pet attacks and uses reaction to give disadvantage. Leaving you to dps or support party as needed. Could go battlesmith to18, or take wizard4 and smith to 16 for extra feat and spell slots

You know, almost every time I post on one of your videos, you put a heart on my comment, and on many other comments too.
If it were almost any other creator, I’d think they were just running through the comments, reacting to all of them to make people feel seen in order to get more views. But, for some reason, I really believe you’re reading every comment and expressing your genuine emotions.
Thank you, and I love you. ❤
I'd argue that bumping Intelligence is actually the opposite of a no-brainer
plot twist: it's a clockwork soul sorcerer
Colby, I love you man, but if you really want crusader's mantle on a wizard by level 17... Stay wizard and cast wish. It's a terrible use of wish, granted, but at least you got the option of being a wizard
Colby clearly took a couple levels in bard at the end! Sheesh 😂😂
One feature is a recurring thing across min max builds: you either mix and match different classes, or go wizard 20 and that’s it.
If I could save time in a bottle! Excited for this build! Mayhaps a graviturgy wizard in the future?
Regarding Countercharm being bad: I have been playing this game for some time now, and I've only seen Countercharm be used to great effect once. It happened in our 3-year long (so far) campaign. We had our bard, originaly born an elf and now reincarnated as a female white dragonborn, pull out her lute and preemptively play a soothing melody to countercharm the alluring song of an imprisoned angel we were hearing during our night rest in a god forsaken marsh (think of it as a "siren's song" kind of situation). Outside this one very specific occasion, yeah, it has been a total waste of a feat.
Please don't stop the Princess Bride references! They give me life 🤣
Crusaders mantle finally appears! I've been wanting to see you use this spell ever since the subscriber special when treantmonk played the summoner and you didn't caster it when he had 16 velociraptors
1d4 damage doesn't sound like a lot of damage and it's a concentration spell as well so how could a summoner really use it?
@@snazzyfeathers 1d4 times 16
Let’s hear it for the return of the Silvery Barbs Mob! Yay!
I’m confused - Surely being close enough to an enemy to use Draconic Cry is unusual and not preferable for the class. How often can it be used?
I want to see an Order of Scribes build sometime! They can do some fun things with changing damage types on spells, casting spells from their sentient spellbook familiar, and can still also have a familiar. I'm curious how much damage you could do without being in the room, lol. It would probably have to be a nova build though, since you can only cast from your awakened spellbook a certain number of times per day.
Only Scribe I've done so far... ruclips.net/video/5aMgB7FTBgs/видео.html
The emphasis is on the word me~"
@@Moleje1337I've had an idea for Scribe Wizard with 3 level Artificer dip for Armorer subclass myself for making a thematic reference character.
No brain equals no feelings...
Except that you could conjure them on top of the dragon, so they wouldn't need to make the save
Player: "...which is why the objects are fighting next to our 10th level Paladin..."
I need to get my eyes checked cuz I read this as Tuna Wizard and now I'm weirdly disappointed, still loved the build tho :)
Right here: forums.giantitp.com/showthread.php?582779-Comprehensive-DPR-Calculator-(v2-0))
Oh bummer, "The Time LORD" would have been the most amazing Doctor who homage. 🥺
I love how you went wizard mostly and propped it up with Bard. It's about time someone spoke the truth. Wizards are passe, Bards are the OP fotm now!!!🤣
Yay Bards!
I totally called the Bard multi-classing.
I'm loving the random Princess Bride quotes. One of my all time favourites 👍
When you take Fey touched, wouldn't Bless be better for concentration? I **think** it should be better DPR, and you get to buff allies alongside the other great benefits.
This is your future self writing to your current self to start playing a Chronomancer already!
56:33 Well I had A GOOD TIME.
Or a kungfu spellcaster with a green rock
Go diviner wizard 17 get the feat adept metamagic then end with 3 sorcerer. You get 9 level spells from wizard, full caster slots and 5 metamagics to finally get heighten magic. Combine that disadvantage with portents and you will make enemies burn legendary saves like crazy.
this build should come with a disclaimer of something like "No Tardis's or Timelord's was harmed or regenerated during the construction of this build'"
Wow, I was thinking that D&D Deep Dive is quite an alliterative mouthful, then realized for the first time that is four Ds... D4
_facepalm_
Don’t worry, you’re not alone! 😉
Sticking with the theme of Dunamancy, you should do Graviturgy!
Any chance you can teach us how you calculate for DPR vs AC? I know there are resources out there but your voice is amazing.
Staying home with a sick kid so get to watch early!
I know kobold synergizes with your attack strategy, but I probably would have gone tortle (for built in AC) or glitchling (adding a nice "clockwork" theme to the time magic).
Another point in favor of the updated kobold - they now get a +2 and a +1 rather than just a +2. That’s a big advantage for them!
There is no new kobold. That's just a weird lizard
Oh no, as a DM, my BBEG has both Silvery Barbs and Disintegrate on their spell list, but I truly didn't think to use them together until now.
Hey Colby, this build and possibly others are not in your dnd optimized Playlist
Fixed! Thanks :)
A short video today, huh? 😉😂
lol anything under an hour is a win!
@@DnDDeepDive nah, I prefer the longer ones... they usually seem more complex and original.
@@DnDDeepDive but a loss for us! Give us the 3h cut!

The disintegrate spell fits very well for the theme. You speed up time for just that person until they erode away from old age.
This is so cool!! I’d love to see something with a horizon walker. The flavour looks awesome but I think it’s very situational so it might be a challenge to optimise
Love your stuff as always! Great video.
In regards to wizard subclasses not being unique, perhaps it's just that the spells overshadow the features.
Where will you find 36 d4's? Lol, I love it
I really like this build, but one thing that worries me is if a DM would actually consider animated objects as "allies." RAW it's not necessarily clear so it's up to the DM and if they say no, well then there goes the Draconic Cry advantage and that crazy damage bump from Crusader's Mantle. Combine this with allowing the attacks to be considered magical and not requiring extra bonus actions to command them to attack other targets, and you're asking the DM to bend a lot of rules in your favor.
You are very easy to listen to. Voice coaching/training? Keep up the good work!
I’ve never done any, if that’s what you’re asking, but thanks! :)
I never really clocked you as the type of guy to make a build like this, but I had the time of my life watching this video
So this build is not only time wizard, but also thousand dragon, and dark sage
I love how new viewers hopping into this video would have no idea why you're swarmed by young children whenever you say Silvery Barbs.
Lol. Rookies!!!
Perfect timing, I was looking through your optimized playlist for this concept last night
Amazing build
i like 1 level cleric dips on wizards myself.
Lore Bard 6 for Tiny Servant and Crusader's Mantle, then Sorcerer for extended spell? at Level 17, you can summon 96 tiny servants extended spell before a long rest. each does 1d4+3, plus 1d4 from crusader's mantle, with a +5 to hit thats 600 damage against AC10
EDIT: Lunar Sorcerer meant you don't even need to pay sorcery points for extended spell which should take you over 100 summons, peace cleric 1 to increase to hit, and you can switch to Stinking Cloud to give advantage and trap them.
Based on the title alone this has gotta be a tier 1 build.
In my heart! :)
@@DnDDeepDive he still did so well without Action Surge!
So, I’m a cis, white, straight American man… but dude, you’re putting SOOOO much pressure on yourself. I get the “don’t want to die alone” part, but you’re a good looking dude with real life skills to being to a relationship:
1) You cook *well* (I mean, it looks good anyway)
2) You have a sizable RUclips following and do/will make a decent living from it
3) You are reflective enough to hopefully bounce back from bad choices or even avoid them in the first place
4) You seem to understand your own interior dynamics enough to possibly have the judgement to recognize healthy or I healthy ones in a partner
5) You seem to be a clear communicator (at least in video form, if not in real-time).
Colby: "Wizard class levels might be my least of any class, I wonder why?"
Also Colby in what seems like every wizard video before this one: "I'm making a wizard! We're going to start by taking 2 levels of fighter, then 3 levels of paladin, and then 2 level of warlock and by level 10 we're finally getting second level wizard spells!". :P
It's really nice to have one that's straight Wizard.
If you really want to set up Crusader's Mantle for your burst round, you can use Wish for that as well (although you can't use the bead for that, unfortunately.)
So what do we keep in the two beads?
Finally drop out again and join the school of Illusion for the rest while picking up enchantment spells
Now you are fate itself!
