The same Michael Gove who, as Education Secretary introduced a rule that any teacher who was found to have taken drugs would be struck off and then when it emerged during the leadership campaign that he himself had taken drugs remarked that 'no person should be defined by their worst mistake.' A hypocrite of the highest order.

Gove would have been around 26 in 1993. So not some teenage foolishness, then, as will no doubt be claimed. Nadia Whitthome is currently the youngest MP. She was 23 when elected and is 25 now. Mhairi Black was 20 when she was elected and is 27 now. Owen Paterson is 65. Does that get him off or is being a Tory the trick?

In debating societies, participants are often called on to speak for viewpoints that do not necessarily align with their own true position. Arguing for ideas that you actually object to is intended to test and develop your debating skills. This is what Damian is driving at.
I don't think this gets Gove off the hook, though. There was no need to use such vile condescending language, even if he was talking against his own viewpoints, and I'm not convinced he was at all.
