me and bitsbug originally made this sign language system to communicate with eachother in Rainworld because voicechat is a pain and pausing to type is annoying. A visual legend was made mainly for quick referencing... but then it was posted on tumblr... so now heres a more in-depth video version for people who actually want to use it themselves.
eek ahh oof youtoube wont let me make the links clickable

not included in the list of signs is jumping up and down to signify joy or "liking" something (subtitled in the example as [yippee], and excessive crouching to signify distaste or "disliking" something (subtitled in the example as [loser] cause we use it as an insult too)

Good to see that repeatedly crouching is still the gamer's sign of peace.

5:47 ah, the joyous dance of finding shelter after a long day in a cycle. highly relatable.
“Month 2,day 10
Since my arrival on this planet, I’ve rarely ever seen the local fauna partake in communication. Last month,I caught my first glimpse. The slugcats appear to be communicating in some form of signing. After a few days of careful observation,I’ve written a sheet describing the meaning I observed in their signs. This is quite the breakthrough!”
-unknown pathfinder,AD:2125
the comment section lore is getting deep, oh boy
wowza! nice
Month 4, day 12
Ever scince i made this breakthrough i attempted to comunicate with them, the fairly restrictive lanbuage of very litle words made it quite the challange, the fact that i was an unknown creature larger than them did not help but nontheless i tried. What follows is the "conversation" between me and a slugcat wandering in my encampment:
@@deboraluz27 The slugcat seemed to be waving at me from the safety of some algae-like plants, trying to get my attention. I respond.
“You”
The slugcat waits, as if I had a whole sentence to finish, to which I was unable to craft, I was too unsure.
After a moment, it “says” something. It was a complex string of movements, all of which with a meaning, a meaning I was barely holding onto.
“You predator..you…… me scared..”
I hesitated with my response, I was thoroughly thinking my movements, to present myself as friendly, yet curious.
“Me follow you”
The slugcat springs back to the direction it came from, too quick and agile for me to follow. Though I was unable to record their language, I did find out how fascinating their movement was!
@@deboraluz27Slugcat: *points at a random pack of rations, likely asking for food*
this is adorable. i love when players come up with subtle communication in games and this one is the most complex i've seen :D fun stuff

This feels like a glimpse into actual slugcat life, like if monk and survivor managed to barrely clutch their hands while going through the rapids and now have to find their way home together
I really like how 5p's sign can be interpreted both as the ring of pearls he has around himself or the fact that he's very guarded and hostile (with the sign looking like shields at his sides), while Moon's reminds me both of the act of the sun setting, a crescent moon shape, and the fact she's very kind and patient (and would, most likely, pet the slugcats if prompted, which is what the sign can also look like).
Very creative and easy to understand! A couple of signs one after the other can quickly craft a simple sentence that will get your point across faster than typing. The [scav] + [object] to mean pearl is genius imo
yes yes yes i like this comment. my personal interpretation is the 5P sign is a scug swiping at its ears like "its the guy with the antennae" but i love this also
Also (As another comment said) The Moon sign is done crouching where Pebbles is done standing since Moon's can is on the ground and doesn't have legs anymore
i also saw someone else in the comments suggest the 5P sign may refer to his structure's intact legs (standing up, tracing two lines down), and the LTTM sign may refer to her structure being collapsed (lying down)! i think it's really neat how many plausible theories there are. i want to study slugcat linguistics now.
Gosh, this makes me want a persistent MMO/online version of Rain World even more. I know that's a weird thing to want, I mainly mean being able to explore the same world as other players, and bump into each other out in the wild, make friends and enemies... and the slug sign would be such a cool and immersive tool in your belt for communicating with others and stuff, I love it.
That would actually work really well too since things would respawn next cycle
If anyone does plan on using this, I would recommend getting the mods;
"Slugsign Captions" by Actually A Spider, which, as the name would suggest, would provide readable captions to slugsign you do.
"S Word Pass" by The doge, which lets you set custom keybinds to the different slugsigns, which I would assume it works just fine with "Slugsign Captions" (basically, it has custom macro's for certain actions sequences that would play when the set button is pressed.)
"Jolly Rebind" by SabreML, which lets you at least set a custom key to the pointing action, making it MUCH EASIER than double tapping the map button.
This is super cool, but I would personally like to use some more body movements like jumping, crouching, turning etc. because they are easier to remember.
Since you jump, crouch, and turn so much it’d be difficult to tell what’s communication and not
man I wish scavs could understand this that'd be so cool
And slugpups, come to think of it
so unbelievably creative-
i love how "food" looks like eating and each carry looks like lifting someone or being lifted
and predator! it's like a lizard jaw or a clawed hand going, "rawr"
This did a better job at teaching me another language than my Spanish teacher.
My Spanish teacher left to become a music man.
This is so creative and interesting, I'm immediately imagining all kinds scenarios where this gets used in game. Like one is asked to scout ahead for stuff and the other says to [stay]. I also like the idea of potential chains, like in another scouting scenario where the other says [question]: [region] (pointing to a certain pipe) [predator]? Then the scout checks and comes back with a [yes] or [no]. Silent communication like this is so lovely, it reminds me of games like Journey where you really just have wordless yet beautifully intricate interactions. Something about it is so nice.
Monk and survivor find each other and finally head home
This is an alternate universe where monk didn't get separated from survivor and they stayed together until they got back to the treee
I would switch the "relax" and "predator" signs as the relax one looks like a "careful, stay behind while I see if it's safe" and the other one transmits reassurance to me, like little pats from the ground. Maybe both can mean the same but for two directions and an agitated version means predator and a slow version means relax
yea i guess you can interpret like that! the way we kind of saw it was that "predator" kind of looks like a slugcat miming the jaws of a lizard (scary pred with big teeth!) and relax is just a scug scratching its butt
@@gameboy-20 oh nice, if you put it that way I can see it
From more of a worldbuilding perspective rather than a gameplay one, I love the idea of both of these interpretations being in use by slugcats. That is, some groups using the lizard jaw imitation technique to signal danger where the same signals relaxed reassurance to others. A bit like how some languages have similar-sounding words with completely different meanings. I think as a whole the idea of there being this varying interpretability lends itself well to immersion.
@@gameboy-20i think this will make for a fun challange! The only way to comunicate is htrough theese gestures plus some extra complications like expedition, randomizer or pups
Also predator is done while lying down and much more inconvenient while relax is done standing up. So switching them would make both much more appropriate for the situations they’re in.
6:19 I appreciate that, despite the circumstances, rapidly crouching is still a universal sign of peace and teamwork.
thank you so much for the guide this is awesome! i never liked having to stop and type either, too annoying and immersion-breaking
Ooo, I love the way the slugsign for "cycle" resembles the movements of a guardian.

This would be insanely fun to watch a playthrough with - *especially* with subtitles to translate em in real time.
This makes me think of how people would find ways to communicate in a rain world mmo or similar type of game
For anyone here playing on controller, if you like how the keyboard version of a sign looks more than the controller version, you can emulate it a little closer by using the dpad!
These seem really interesting, though a couple might pose a risk in environments with hostiles that react to sound rather than vision? Otherwise really cool.

Dang this is a unique way of doing things, ill save this video lol.
And just like in tf2, minecraft and crossout: non-verbal communication
The only thing I can imagine is my confusion when I inevitably forget and someone tries this with me
I would watch the HELL out of a playthrough using this.
i keep seeing comments like "oh it'll be difficult to memorize all of this" or "im going to be confused if someone does this at me im not gonna understand wtf they're saying"
-- what we do is we frequently talk after co-op sessions or even pause in between cycles if there was a communication error so we can tell eachother what we INTENDED to say to them and also what we misinterpreted from the other person. it helps with memorizing too IMO.
oh or or or! if you're doing it vanilla and absolutely refusing to talk to eachother irl. "question" sign is your BEST friend. using it standalone just means "???????????????" and hopefully the other person will either try to clarify or just Give Up.
[Question] what are the "names" used for?
Like, what is the purpouse of naming an overseer or a rock?
@@deboraluz27 oh! names are welll, names we gave ourselves. "rocks" and "overseer" are just what we pretend are the "english translations" of the names lol. names are just the "me" sign combined with some kind of special movement or thing that differentiates it

i saw the post on tumblr and now im watching this and i think its really cool that yall made a whole-ass conlang out of rain world!
i was going to make a writing system out of the glyphs they use which would be in a similar (albeit a lot less functional) vein
If they ever make a Rain World 2 they need to add slugsign as an actual mechanic you have to learn if you want to communicate with certain AI, such as slugpups and slugcats
It’s like watching a nature documentary
"through whatever silly dances your species communicates my existance..."

First of all - really cool Idea! Some of the things look very similar, but can mean different things. And also, probably rakes time not to only practice, but even remember these.
Second - Revivify mode?! I need to check it out! Thank you for mentioning it.
if i had a nickel for everytime I mistook "follow me" for "question" ... the pointing system is REALLY limited but thats what makes this so fun to work on. miscommunication is HILARIOUS to look at when the slugs start angrily waving their arms around.
@@gameboy-20 Oh, I bet it is more funny in retrospect, but still - yes, that's part of the fun I think. It is actually more immersive to watch you do it, because instead of voice or just text, you see slug cats doing something to communicate. And then the "subtitles" make it super easy and gun to follow.
I would watch the playthrough like this
I don’t even play or watch Rainworld but this is so captivating
while i feel hopping in place twice makes a better 'stay' command from past use in training slugpups, i feel like this is a really comprehensive system that i could see being used widely by fans! good on you for the creativity!
yeaa.... in hindsight i wish we incorporated some of the slugpup commands. it would be so cute then because you could pretend you're actually speaking to them and they're responding! and i see a lot of people go "i wish this worked on slugpups" ... it'd be cute.
i think hopping a bunch of times in a row means : "play" for slugpups, a singular hop while holding down means "stay here", and then hopping again while holding up means "follow me again" ... although all three of those visually look pretty similar lol.
This is so freaking brilliant
Imagine if scavs recognized and reacted to these gestures, like sign language.
That be so cool
i remember when i first saw the comic of you two bullying five pebbles and it lived in my head rent free
this is amazing!! you sign so fluently to each other. how many hours of co op do you have?
this inspired me to officially implement simple gestures (basically pointing various directions) into my survival horror game I'm making (think DST/Starveio meets Spooky's Jumpscare Mansion)
there will also be more important things you can use them for.
