not trying to format it - just install something to it. the usb randomly switched to being write only earlier today, dont know why, and none of the solutions people are offering actually work. for the diskpart one, it says it does it successfully and then doesnt actually change anything. usb is a sandisk 128gb if that helps anyone, no physical switch on it.
Proceed w caution but if the issue was caused by using an etching tool, you might be able to get the usb working again by clearing the partition created by the etcher and creating a new volume by: On diskpart: > list disk > select disk # > list partition > select partition # //this will be the partition that was created by the etcher > clean Then on Disk Management (assuming ur using Windows): Find the “disk #”. The partitions should now say “unallocated”. You can make the drive useable again by right-clicking on the unallocated partition and selecting “New Simple Volume” >next>next>next> etc Warning: you’ll lose any files that were on the usb if this method works- but at least you’ll having a functional usb?

it didn't work for me now the "write protection" notification doesn't appear anymore and when I try to drag files to the recycle bin it does not work too and I cant put any new files in the usb

My USB flash drive mysteriously got Write protected on its own, I have tons of movies, Tv shows, educational business videos, important personal documents and family photos, window apps, and more. The majority of these files are irreplicable, I been saving and collecting them for years. But now for some odd reason it got Write Protected out of nowhere, I can't rename files, can't copy, paste, delete, defrag or access some files. If I follow these instructions, would it format my flash drive, and delete everything, because I need it fixed but I'm very afraid I'm going to lose everything. I don't have extra storage to backup 60G of files. Please let me know ASAP.

You have to type "exit" before you exit out the Command Prompt or else it doesn't work (at least speaking from my experience).

Go into Disk Management and FORMAT the disk. That worked for me.
