    We have owned a largish automotive service center since the early 80s and our first code readers were huge complicated machines that hung from a track in the ceiling... It was even called the diagnostics Bay and we had one Class A mechanic (Canadian tech licence designation) that specialized in just that...the software was obtained through a subscription model that cost five figures a year. Today our tire change guys usually have one in their top drawers... Amazing how they have become so much more refined and accessible.

    A good test after checking with the scan tool and finding out that the O2 sensor or the catalytic converter could be bad is to swap the two sensors. The scan tool already showed that one sensor is good, so if it's swapped to the potentially bad cat and displays the same behaviour as the questionable O2 sensor you know it's the cat and not the sensor.

    Story time: during my senior year of college, my 2005 Focus set a CEL for a bad O2 sensor. When I got around to bringing it to a shop, unfortunately it became apparent that the reason the O2 sensor went bad was that the valve cover gasket failed and oil had run down through the wiring harness and contaminated everything. So sometimes, even though the code itself isn't critical, but it still points to something major going wrong.
    Between the O2 sensors and coil boots ruined by the oil leak and the general cleanup of the mess I ended up putting about $1k into a $2.5k car. 😬 Sometimes that's just how it goes.

Thank the Gods for CAA (Canadian AAA). I had it towed to my mechanic, and they found that one of the lines to the oilcooler has broken. They fixed it, and I have had no problems since.

    I have an had purchased Topdon scanner about a year ago, but I returned it after reading some info and comparisons of the Autel scanner which was a couple hundred $ more, but ended up buying the Autel due a wider range of module support. I love the Autel, just wish I had purchased the Bluetooth variant of the scanner. Either way, it enables me to get into the modules and see what is going on. Manually testing these circuits instead of paying a dealer a large amount of money to diagnose and fix what I can do in my own shop. As Jarod mentioned, the internet is a great source of info and worthwhile to do some research on your own once you have some direction.

    One time I left an interior bulb on and it killed my battery. (2010 Subaru Impreza) So I had replaced every single bulb front back and interior to LED, and after that I would randomly get a warning light that went away after restarting the car. I also would get noticeable power reduction when the headlights were on. I had installed some LED brake light bulbs in my car, from a reputable brand that apparently had inbuilt Canbus control to prevent errors and LED headlight bulbs. I ended up getting a scan tool (funnily enough a topdon, but a 600s model) and the code and subsequent web search brought up a brake light bulb issue similar to the LED headlight issue Jared mentioned. I replaced the brake lights back to regular halogen and has been fine ever since. That small headache thing meant I now have a scan tool, and it helped me out identify a faulty O2 sensor during a future problem. Worth it in the end, just for those instances alone.

    I guess my advice would be
    1.) make sure battery and terminals are clean all the time
    2.) always verify grounds are good
    3.) always check the pathway to suspected bad part and verify the correct voltage it being sent to the part and after said part
    4.) always reference the data from service manual
    Example: I had a issue arise after snow wheeling one day weather was still freezing out. The next day I packed up to head home on road trip stopped at gas station to potty my dog and continued to my dog's spa before heading home. (both times vehicle was off which is important) after getting a call to pick up dog when I started my truck the dash lit up like a raving xmas tree and went into limp mode after running my diagnostic scan tool pulling the codes and referencing them it was either a bad transmission valve body or torque converter checked my connections they where all tight and cleared the codes. The code fault stated it was a consecutive 2 drive cycle dtc which means the issue had to have present from the gas station and then at the dog spa when I dropped my dog off. I toke it for a spin making sure to recreate any condition of driving before and stopping and shutting the vehicle off and starting it again and doing the same a few times to retrigger the dtc if it was there. But all seemed normal drove home on the 6 hour road trip and left the situation to M.A.N ( Monitor As Needed) would of been around $10k for another transmission with out install. 18k miles later still no dtc or any signs of lack of performance, slippage, failure to lock up the torque converter. That gremlin that popped ups honestly baffles me as there's no other shared circuit to be responsible, if the tight cables where loose from the day before why did it only happen on the 4th start up since then and during both start ups that problem was found everything was at operating temperature from each start up. I have it saved in profile on diag tool with all the information just encase one day I need that information for any thing.

    I literally just bought a Topdon tool for my PHEV after evaluating all the other stuff on the market and determining that the Topdon not only supports more functions but is also half the cost of the closest competition... I opted for the ArtiDiag900 Lite 2, as it basically supported everything that the pro level tool did for my particular vehicle. Even the basic level tool had a good level of support for my vehicle, but not the stuff that needed bidirectional, which is why I opted for the model I did..

    I only work on my own cars, but with V6/V8 engines where there's two catalytic converters, you could swap the O2 sensors from one side to the other to see if the code follows the sensor. Nissan, in their infinite wisdom, have slightly different ecu harness pigtails for the downstream sensors, so I swapped the O2 sensors around to test and confirm. I have a $25 foxwell i scooped up during a BF sale a few years ago, it's certainly a decent budget option, but doesn't allow for the more advanced testing I see Jared doing in this video.

I know the multi-thousand dollar Autels will do this, but I just don't have the budget to buy something like that for a $500 car lol. Really hope you see this and can help answer my questions!!

Run away from the car if it has not been maintained well.....
    Black oil or milky oil, choco milk power steering and whining , hesitation.........clunky,grinding,or no engaegement of gears....run away or "project" the car...... and the most important thing to remember is what your car is worth and how much does it cost to get it fixed.... 2500$(car worth, blue book)500$ repair = fair....

    The repair would exceed the cars worth, because you have to have to tear down the interior.
    So I asked the shop, to just clear the codes, I know the exact problem. They basically wanted to scrap the car, because airbag malfunction and they wanted to rebuild the whole airbag system. I refused and said, that I exactly knew, what was wrong. 5 years, no airbag light since than.

    I've found it odd is the check engine light symbol of an old school engine with a top mounted air filter, and ob2 came out after carburetors were a thing of the past.

    Happy Thanksgiving. I have heard several people say that they add oil when the oil pressure light comes on. Isn't that harmful to the engine to wait until that happens?

    • @TheQuestionableGarage
      @TheQuestionableGarage  6 месяцев назад +2

      You want to check the oil level first, low oil can cause it to flicker on, as essentially all the oil leaves the pan and needs to drain back down before it can pump again. So anytime the oil pressure light comes on, check oil level before adding anything

      Software is the biggest key, and built in features. I’ve used quite a few, major name brands and the budget ones, and I honestly endorse Topdon as I feel like it truly is the greatest value right now.

      Ecm replacements, certain levels of coding, slightly larger model support. Honestly, if you are mostly doing your own stuff, the TopScan is perfect, in my experience one of the most powerful Bluetooth scanners out there.

    Ive been trying to fix my car (2002 ford taurus 3l 12v (vulcan)77k miles). I got a code scanner (fixd), it told me that both EGR, and misfire on 3. I swapped some spark plug wires, and the misfire changed to 4. I replaced the EGR, and coil pack, and the problem went away. A month or two later, and the car is stalling, but only at idle, and only after its warmed up. You can drive it just fine before the engine warms up, or if you are moving down the road, but as soon as its warmed up, if you stop and idle, the RPM starts fluctuating and stalls. Ive been popping it out of gear at stop lights, and it doesnt usually stall, but it rpm is very erratic. The scanner tells me that its got a random misfire, and now its telling me fuel injection problem on both banks (1 and 2), and EGR problem.

    Check engine light = you're going to want to check this.
    Flashing check engine = you're going to want to pull over now.

    From the link I can’t figure whether the OBD dongle is Topscan Lite or Topscan Pro version. Could you clarify as only the Pro version would worth it for that discount. Amazon seems to be deceiving which makes me believe it is the Lite version.

    • @TheQuestionableGarage
      @TheQuestionableGarage  6 месяцев назад +1

      The 10% discount code only works for the TopScan, the Bluetooth version that links to your phone, they discounted the ArtDiag Pro too much already for the holiday sale to have an additional discount.

    Will that Topdon scanner program keys on a 2011 Porsche?

    • @TheQuestionableGarage
      @TheQuestionableGarage  6 месяцев назад +1

      It is able to do some immobilizer work on the Porsche models, but I believe you may need the Phoenix line to have full key writing ability (Most Locksmith Websites sell that one). If you see writing a lot of keys, they also have their Ninja Line which is solely meant for key writing. Their customer support is amazing, and if you reach out they can confirm which scan tool will take care of your needs.

    Good evening sir. My name is Stephan. I am a U.S. Army veteran and live in Loganville Georgia. I have a 2001 Lexus Gs300 that I am going to put a 6.2L L92 engine in. The engine currently has a hairline crack in cylinder #5. Is there a machine shop you recommend?
