To be completely fair though, he could’ve been an accomplice. Cops sometimes arrest suspects to make them sweat and sell the idea that talking straight away greatly helps them in court. There have been cases before with multiple working together for the murder or a hitman where the technique worked.
If you committed the lesser crime, have a chance to avoid the death penalty or know you’ll hang due to evidence, being the first to strike a deal can help you out incredibly. Depending on your info and the “big fish” you can plea out of jail time or more than halve your sentence.

In all fairness to the detectives here, the husband/boyfriend killing the wife dynamic happens so often it's always the best place to start. 1. He waits till 4pm to call the police and report her missing!. 2. A very public disagreement played out the night before between the two of them. 3. He'd been abusing Nikki physically. 4. a beating like she took, poor thing, is rage (usually)associated with someone who has personal ties. 5. He had no one to confirm his alibi between the hours of 12:30am, and 11am the next morning. 6. Nikki was a white woman, plain and simple, the judge was not taking the chance of him skipping town, so the decision to arrest was made. They awaited the DNA, and then everything changed.

Justice George Sutherland reminded law enforcement that the law has **two aims**: "that guilt not escape, nor innocence suffer". Too often I think prosecutors only remember the former and forget the latter.

Sadly , I was close to this case, the images presented in court during the medical examiner’s testimony will forever be burned in my mind. Her face was completely unidentifiable and it was heart breaking to see all her injuries.
Unfortunately for Doug , there was enough probable cause at the time of his arrest to take him into custody, due to the crime scene being in the road outside his house, the blood found in his garage , and the video didn’t mention there was also a tissue with blood found in the garbage inside his house too. He wasn’t released until results came back from the crime lab to determine non of the blood was from Nikki.
A month after Nikki was found, and before george had connection to her death, George was questioned about a hit and run accident in Green Bay with his truck fitting the description, He voluntarily let the officers download all the content on his phone, from that hit and run incident.
Once he was identified from CODIS, almost 4 months later, the police were able to see he had contact with an officer about the hit and run incident and they had all the content and gps locations from his phone before even arresting him for Nikkis death . To enter dna into CODIS you need a full dna profile . Remarkably, Out of the 100+ swabs taken from Nikki, only one swab came back from the lab with a full dna profile. She was only wearing one sock when she was found. the full dna profile came from the inside of the top of her sock.
Thank god for dna and technology , or George would of never been found.

And maybe every so often, a suspect (not saying this one in particular) deserves a "mediocre" defense attorney for their actions. Like the most horrifying serial killers and sociopaths.
