In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen that you might not know.
A Quick Overview:
Group: Hound Dogs
Weight: 30 to 40 pounds
Height: 13 to 15 inches tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: Starts at 14 years
The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen is one of many small varieties of the French hounds that were developed long ago. The PBGV can be traced back to the 16th century. His name is descriptive with "petit" meaning small, "basset" meaning low to the ground, "griffon" meaning wire-haired, and "vendeen" referring to the part of France where the breed originated. This area of France is on the country's western coast and is known for being a tough environment with a lot of thick underbrush, rocks, and brambles.
Often described as 'scruffy dogs' both the Petit and the Grand have a particularly rustic appearance. The PBGV has a slightly elongated body with a prominent, well-developed nose. It has large eyes with an intelligent expression and a strong bone structure. Both the PBGV and GBGV are friendly outgoing dogs, with the PBGV bearing the nickname 'the Happy Hound'.
While they are scent Hounds, they are not perhaps as nose obsessed as other scent Hounds and are very responsive to training. The GBGV is fast and well-voiced but can be stubborn at times. The breed has been known to perform extremely well in Obedience, Agility, and Tracking. It does require an extremely well-fenced yard, and should not be let off lead in unsecure areas.

I had a pbgv for 15 years. He was the best dog I ever had.😢
Funny, mine is absolutely silent! Always been quiet even as a pup and barks only when hearing the doorbell
That’s my dog Ralph biting the chopper at 0:24!
I have a 14 year old one. He doesn't howl much but boy does he bark loud.
I have one that's mixed with Border Collie. I grew up with a Border Collie, and the one I have now is definitely more a Petit Basset than Border Collie. He's very much like a forever puppy, despite being like 8 now. He's so, so happy all the time, no matter what. You accidentally drop a ball on the floor and he will bounce towards it and think you're playing, while wagging his tail so hard he knocks stuff down. But he is also very mischievous, and will always test the boundaries. He needs to smell everything. He needs to taste everything. Paper? Delicious. Rocks? Yum. You dropped a LEAF? It's his lucky day. Unfortunately he can't be off leash, because once he finds something he's interested in, he will run towards it, and he will not care about any delicious juicy meaty treat I might have in my hand. His sense of adventure is very strong! I wonder if he'll act like an adult dog once he reaches his senior years... Probably not, lol.
We used to have one of these, my father used it to hunt deer
These are VERY closely related to Dachshunds. They even look like Wirehaired Dachshunds. Interesting...
That's funny. I was just led to this video today, because yesterday we realized that our Delilah, who we thought was a dachshund/scottish terrier/schnauzer mix, was more likely a PBVG/schnuazer mix. She is definitely always happy:) along with most of the other characteristics described in the video.
YE
How wilful, charming, and curious is your PBGV?
Do they always need you to keep them occupied?
Let us know in the comments!
Mooph! Mooph!
One thing is howling, but do they bark a lot?
I have a 2 yr old one and he does not bark a lot, only when something is happening like someone knocking on your door or something when they hunt ofc.
One of mine barks at the neighbors whenever they cross in front without her permission. And they never get permission. 😊. The other doesn’t bark at the neighbors at all.
Related to the basset hound ??
Only in the middle name, which both breeds share.
i would like the video, but its at 69.
