Short Basset Fauve de Breatgne description:
The Basset Fauve de Breatgne is a small short legged breed, but also very lively and athletic dog. They are built similarly as the more popular Basset Hound, but they are lighter all through and longer in the leg. The average height is between 32-38 cm, which is 13-15 inches and weight is typically between 25-35 pounds, which is 11-16 kg.
The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is one of the smallest hound, so you should not be surprised that they are great at hunting. On the other hand, they also make excellent companion dogs. When they are on the hunt, they are very brave and courageous, strong willed, obstinate and they can adapt to all terrains. Thanks to that, they truly are very succesfull at hunting.

Growing up my father was good friends with a breeder and he was gifted with a tiny runt of the pack. I remember when my Dad brought her home she was 10 weeks old but smaller than a kids shoe. She used to hunt the birds in our backyard by sneaking up on them in the grass and pouncing. RIP Twix I miss you.

I have a lovely Basset Fauve de Bretagne, she's 1 year now, we live in France, near a big forest : perfect for hikes. She's just perfect, sociable, loves cuddles, kids, all other dogs she meets, she never bark, she's never agressive, she follows me everywhere, even in the bathroom !! A little bubble of love. Can't post a photo here in my comment, would like you to see her goofy face ;-) Sorry for my english ! Liked your video, thankssss 👌

I lucked out and adopted one of these guys thinking it was a weird mutt. He's one of the best dogs I've ever had and fits the bill for everything stated in this video. Huge chase instinct but has also never so much as growled at a person or other dog. They're basically short legged thicc toddlers.

Bought a puppy 2 months ago, picking it up in France in 4 weeks, waiting for some vaccines and quantaine time to pass since i Live in Sweden.
My friend got 2 Basset fauve. I will use my as family and hunting friend. My friend use his for hunting too.
They are really social and energetic, but still “own minded” that is good for dogs following a track. But, mine is hopefully not too much “own minded”.
My parents had many different breeds, i can really recommend a Basset fauve.

Just recently adopted a Basset Fauve Podengo Mix from Fast Friends whom they flew him over from Portugal from the agency Bring Portuguese Podengos To Light. He is just under a year old and is such a little love bug. We also have a 17 year old Pomeranian and the Basset Fauve is so gentle with him. The Podengos in Portugal live such a horrible life and I feel blessed that my mixed up Fauve Podengo found me and a big shout out to Fast Friends for letting him come into my life. Don’t shop ADOPT!

Good day. I have a rescue dog of approximately 11 years. He has the looks and character which you describe in your video. I live in South Africa. The breed is recognized as a rare breed by KUSA ( Kennel Union of South Africa) but I have been unable to find any breeders in South Africa. Possibly someone knows of anyone who exported Basset Fauve de Bretagne to South Africa.
    Yours Sincerely. Colin Auret.

We bought a puppy back in 2008 and the owners told us that he was a mix between a Fauve de Bretagne and a Rat Terrier. They told us that the alleged dad (an award winning Fauve) had escaped from a breeding farm nearby and had found its way to their female Rat Terrier and a couple weeks later, puppies were born.
We took him home but we never really believed that story: the owners had probably made that up as part of their sales pitch. Moreover, he didn't really look like a typical Fauve as he was black instead of the typical orange/beige color. We did notice that he had a similar white jabot that some Fauves have (like the one at 1:07 and 2:58), but aside from that we had no reason to believe that he was indeed a Fauve de Bretagne. As he grew we did start to notice more similarities. As a pup, he would be sniffing all over the place, picking up every scent, and we jokingly said that he belonged at the airport, where he could search for narcotics. Whenever he was off-leash and wandering in our garden, he would often sneak off to our neighbors, which made us angry at times. Later, we would discover that this was merely his instinct, and that most Fauves do this. In fact, a couple years later I started Googling and found that there was indeed a Fauve de Bretagne breeding farm close to where we had picked up our puppy, which did have award winning Fauves. That is when we actually started to believe the story that the owners had told us years before.
To anyone who reads this and that is contemplating buying a Basset Fauve de Bretagne, there are a couple of things that you should know. First, their desire to explore and pick up on scents makes them very hard to control. Their desire to explore is so big that they will ignore anything you say. That's exactly what our dog did. He was very hard to control off-leash and on the beach he would just wander off and disappear, which was extremely annoying. Second, they are the sweetest and most loving animals you will find. They will be kind to anyone and any animal (except for the ones they might see as prey, such as birds, or after they have had a bad encounter with another dog).Third, they are extremely playful, even when they are old. Our dog would turn 13 in less than 3 months and he never stopped playing. You could give him any toy and he would be the happiest dog on earth.
Unfortunately, all good things come to and end and our Fauve developed a kidney disease. I know that your video at 3:58 mentions that they tend to suffer from kidney diseases but I am not sure whether this is specific to this breed and I could not find any sources that confirm this. We first noticed that our dog started drinking a lot more (approximately 6 months prior to his death) and we did suspect that something might have been wrong, but we never followed up on it, he seemed to do fine. A couple months later (approximately 3), we noticed that he peed a lot more and that we had to walk him more often. Despite that, he did pee in-doors a couple of times, which made no sense given that we took him for walk pretty often. That's when we suspected that his kidneys were failing and we were right. We took him to the vet and they found that his urea and creatinine levels were above the normal levels. The vet also warned us that from this point onward, his health could rapidly deteriorate. However, our dog seemed to be fine. We did have to take him outside every 2 hours or so but he was still as playful as always and never really showed us any signs that he felt sick. Less than a month later however, things went downhill rapidly. 1 day he had stopped eating and drinking. We could tell that he was very ill but we hoped that he would recover. We brought him to the beach and to our surprise he actually started to run - as if he had magically forgotten how sick he was. Little did we know, that would be his last walk on the beach. Back home, he had started to suffer from acid reflux and he was quickly losing weight. We took him to the vet again and he told us that his urea and creatinine levels had grown exponentially and were pretty much 10 times above the normal levels - his body was now essentially poisoning itself. As a last effort we brought him to an veterinary clinic and they tried to rinse his kidneys for 24 hours. When we picked him up, we immediately noticed that he felt better, even though he was still very weak. He actually attempted to play fetch when we brought him back home and we hoped that he would start to eat and drink again. Nonetheless, his health deteriorated the next day once more and he still refused to drink or eat. He could barely walk and he started to suffer from convulsions whenever he would be outside. I am pretty sure that the convulsions were caused by epilepsy. That's when we decided to put him down. We really loved that dog and we still miss him. It is crazy to think that our dog was full of energy at one point and that 1 week later, he would no longer be among us.
