Random Weirdo Ok for the sad music that’s supposed to play , type “ Sorrow octopath “ on RUclips and listen to it while thinking of that switch that you Really want .
Random Weirdo I hear that !! I have to wait till Christmas to buy it for my son, the wife says I'll spoil him if I buy it before even if it's for me it will be his lol. C'mon xmas! I wanna play octopath Zelda and Mario like a motherfucker
That's like playing a stealth game and bitching about the combat. It is a stealth game, I know dishonored pissed on what a stealth game is, but yeah similar point.
When I think of a grind fest I think of the old monster Hunter games and having to fight an extremely over powered monster multiple times to get a single material to make a single weapon
I pretty sure those people are just rushing the game so whenever they hit a boss die and go back to a area to aka to grind they get bored after a few seconds
I love this game so much it hurts. Even after putting 105 hours into it I almost want to start over just to level up again and see the great story a second time.
The gameplay is repetitive once you start going through multiple chapters very quickly in the same way all games are repetitive. There is a certain pattern to the way the chapters are structured, just like every fortnite game has a pattern to the way you go about it; just like every Mario level has a pattern in the way you interact with the environment; and just like every other game is built to incorporate its own style of gameplay. The problem that people have I think is that they’re skipping the dialogue entirely because they don’t seem to understand that while the combat is superb in this game, the game itself is a story-focused game. If you spend the time to read the cut scenes and dialogue in the chapters, then that’s where you will start to see the unique aspects of each character, story and chapter.
Dat it just means they hate most I am not a huge fan of most rpgs but my favorite game franchise is Pokémon and I love kingdom hearts but besides that I’m not an rpg fan so do you hate my opinion now
Lalo why. I love him and his videos and the Channel. I watch him a lot and enjoy the content. But I think, and that is MY opinion, he is screaming to much. Do you have a problem with my opinion?
I whole-heartedly agree with your opinion. Ever since a little before E3, he started yelling in all his videos... and I just don't click on them anymore. I made a comment comparing his screaming to OBEONE, which is why I stopped watching his stuff. It used to be just the intro and then it was more and more as the Switch was announced and he wasn't getting any new subs. I get it, it's his livelihood, but damn, it's my ears man.... and they burst every time I click on one of his newer videos.
In all honesty you can play the first 3 hours of the game for FREE, I think playing said demo will tell you whether or not to buy it than someone else's opinion.
This has been my view. Anyone can download the demo, play it and if they like it then they can buy it... if they don't they can delete it so their is nothing to loose. Honestly I wish more games did this.
A lot of people throw around terms like "grindfest" without even knowing exactly what that is. I think those people who think you need to grind to progress say that because they expected to pick one character and go straight to the end of their story. If you don't want to go around and finish other's chapters then yes, you will have to grind a lot. Playing each different chapter and leveling up from that is NOT GRINDING. Grinding is staying in some place leveling up without moving anywhere in the game. The other possibility would be that they are terrible and want to brute force through without using strategy in battle. Which is pretty common for the new generation of gamers.
AndresLionheart completly agree. After my first chapter 1, I got shoked when I saw in the world map that the 2 Chapter level was like 26 or whatever, but as far I get all the 8 characters the was piece of cake
I agree, just really liked my party format and wanted to finish their stories first. Doesn't mean I'm not gonna finish the game, just means that I can't play the way that I want to (finishing 4 characters first) which is a small turnoff from a great game.
The last time I've been really forced to grind (Not counting Pokemon) was when I played Bravely Default...........I've refused to change job classes until I get the ones I've loved in the demo Big Mistake
Well yeah, it’s not like there are a ton of jrpgs around for young people to obsess over. Like I doubt many kids are playing final fantasy 1 just to see how it all started. But final fantasy and fire emblem were huge when I was growing up, played all of final fantasy 1 and 8, and played some other jrpgs at the time. I think if you’re 20+ you have more fascination with turn based story games.
Personally I have not found it an issue in terms of characters 'not interacting' with one another too much. I prefer it this way. If there was too much cross over then it would damage the replay value. You hit on this point though. Great video
TheGebs24 my problem is how each character has enough side characters in their individual stories to warrant a full 4 person party that actually interact with each other normally. (Cyrus and Odette or Tressa and Leon for example)
My problem is that they just get together without any thing, i mean its kind of weird how they decide to tell random people their life story and join them just because
I agree. To me, the fact that their stories don't intersect is a strength of the game not a weakness. It frees you up to play through the chapters in any order or combination of characters that you want. That's what makes the game special to me. That being said, sure, if they make a sequel that integrates the party chat into the cut scenes for example, then I guess that might be better? At the same time, I feel like the game is encouraging you to use your imagination about how these characters are interacting within each other's chapters rather then telling you "now this character does this and then this other character does this" etc.
When I was playing the game, I always thought that the repetitive use of “Your Excellency” was super intentional. Lianna called the archbishop father, and called Ophilia her sister. Ophilia called Lianna her sister, but not the archbishop her father. Then, at the very end of the first chapter, when Archbishop Josef gets sicker, she calls him “Father”. Super awesome character development! Don’t know why people didn’t see that!
I had to laugh at Dunkey's video. Not because it was funny, because he said it takes too long to kill enemies. If anyone wants to know a good combo to start with. Tessa+Therion+H'aanit. Tessa can learn an ability to donate bp to H'aanit for H'aanit to use a max boosted Arrowstorm oh her first turn. Therion fits in becuse he can steal sp and donate it to H'aanit as well as steal a +80sp accessory from an npc early on, which is important because H'aanit's Arrowstorm costs 24sp. Using this method you will obliterate pretty much every pack of mobs early on, while traveling the map to collect your other characters.
Saviourself he isn’t having a hard to time, he said it takes way too long and is tedious to do the most basic of things(he was fighting a level one frog and it took forever for the sequence to initiate)
Uh that's your fantasy not mine, I was just commenting on how he never seems to lower his voice or energy levels. That combination of things is somewhat grating imo
I really don't see the issues people are having with the game. I agree with you though, I feel like most reviewers didn't get passed chapter 1. I love this freakin' game. I have a small review on the game but plan on doing a full review once I finish the game on my channel. Great video, Wood! I love all your content. Hope you're feeling better.
I think one of the issues is that they were expecting the story to be told more like some of the games it's an homage to (seiken densetsu 3, the saga games, live-a-live, saga frontier) instead of it being a more episodic affair, which is fine and the game does it well, but if you're expecting everything to connect in a grand narrative, is kind of disappointing.
SherlockHyde I can totally understand that. Maybe some of us just compare new games to older game to often. I like to accept games as they are and not discredit it just because it didnt do something another game already did. That's just my two pennies though.
my issue is that I might have to start the whole thing again to beat the final boss again................and that at some point you have nothing left to do
Is because of the premise, if you told to people there are 8 playable characters which you can recruit or entirelly ignore they must end thinking the posibilities behind them, being character dynamics one of them. Besides is very odd to have a party where no one influences the other. If the game was set in something like chapters centering a character each wouldn´t be a issue, but the game is set to be played so you found them in your adventure, and having them in your party, also hearing their own story... I just a missed oportunity.
Don’t know why everyone says your yelling, you are just excited and there’s a volume button if it’s really too loud for someone. Love the content! Keep it up!
Me at Gamestop: "Do you guys have a red and blue switch in stock?" Guy at the counter: "let me check.... yepp" Me: "And do you have Octopath Traveler?" Guy at the counter: "let me see..... yepp" Me: "okay I'll take both of those"
We're absolutely loving this game at our house. My boyfriend keeps asking, "Did that RUclips guy you watch upload anything else about Octopath?" He'll be happy to see this video!
Great Follow up! I'm glad you addressed the issues other people seem to be stuck on. I have really enjoyed Octopath Traveler and the issues other people have had with the game don't bother me at all. I see it for what it is and what it was designed to be. Keep up the great work!
Wood, there a lot of people on here telling you to stop screaming. DON'T LISTEN TO THEM!!!! Yell, scream, shout, do it all. It shows your passion and that is an incredible thing.

Cyrus being a dancer is the natural order if things 🤷🏿♂️
I downloaded the demo and what got me to buy was the music and the vibration in the controller when I attack. Went that same day and bought it. It's a deep RPG with all the stats I enjoy digging into. You have to really think in battle .
Just a thought, why don’t you try a two part review for big games like this. In this way, you don’t have to cut out important issues for time. You also talk alot, which is not a bad thing. Love the content Wood
RE: grindfest, I actually thought I had this issue as well and then I realized that Cyrus' 1st trait reduces wild encounters. Once you disable this trait, you level on pace and there isn't any real grinding required.
I slowly starting to like this game, I finally finish the story of one of the characters, and I would also like to address some of the complaints show here: 1.The lack of a main story: This is still an issue to me, LiveALive did something similar to Octopath Traveler many decades ago but it was still able to link all of it 7 stories and create an overall plot by end of the game. I don't have too much to add about it, besides the fact that I notice that there a evil organization behind the events happening in all 8 stories and that the lore of the world also establish some connections. 2.Grinding in game: Grinding in this game is very easy and fast. My party is Tressa (thief), Cyrus (dancer), Ophelia (apothecary) and H'annit (warrior), and waves of enemies in 2-3 turns, after breaking the enemy, one spell of Cyrus is all I need to clear a random encounter. Also, if the player doesn't want to deal with random encounters, the mage and cleric classes have skills that lower the encounter rate and pretty much guarantee that the player will be able to flee a battle, respectably. 3.Repetitive dialog: This issue never existed. This was the point in Dunkey's review that he lost me, and it baffles me people can realize that Ophelia use of the word Excellency is due to the hierarchy in the institution she belongs. This is the same as saying that a king being reference in a book as his Majesty is bad writing.
@@itsJoonsung They haven't change at all, a optinal side quest in the end of the game that ties the stories very poorly and superficially doesn't make the story telling in this game any better. The only things that I truly liked of this game were the boss battles and the OST.
Jose Dorda understandable. I never made it that far but I know of the existence of the final boss. I will say I’m not sure how intertwined they could make the story before it’s not octopaths but one path. I actually don’t mind the story separation. I’m glad there’s at least some sort of interaction post chapter 1 where characters have dialogue with each other
Hey Wood, just wanted to let you know that your livestream yesterday meant a lot to me, and to a lot of others as well. Keep up the great work brother, we love ya!
I love dunkey :). He explains really well in one of his videos about how disagreeing with someone on a game shouldn't be a big deal because one of the main strengths in a youtuber like dunkey or beat em ups is the consistency they offer. Whereas a larger review site like ign is just all over the place.
Finished the game. Overall was really fun but what it truly needed was uniting all the character's stories into a single main plot. As it stands to me, its 8 mini games in one.
A good way to solve the character interaction issue would be to have them in little mini "teams" and pairs or a group of characters are involved with one persons story at any given time, and it intersects with all 7 others stories in different ways. It's hard to explain, but the best example of this I could think of is Sonic Adventure. Think about how a large chunk of Sonic's story (spoiler alert) revolved around tracking down Amy in the Egg Carrier, and (spoilers, once again) how Big and E-102 Gamma influenced each other's stories pretty substantially by Gamma capturing Froggy and Big trying to get him back. I don't know man, this was a pretty big thing to mess up, since I (and many, MANY others) usually play RPGs for the story.
Or like how in Seiken Densetsu 3, the characters all interact, and of the 6 playable characters there are 3 pairs that share a primary antagonist. Man, that game came out in '95 and it still does more interesting things with its narrative than half of the JRPGs that come out nowadays.
"Grind-Heavy?" I dunno where that idea comes from, but I've had quite the opposite effect......I didn't want to gain XP at some point because my Lv 60 party already kills every boss in chapter 4 with almost no effort
While I think it’s good your praising the game I do think that what you say isn’t entire true. There has been a game that has done much of the very same thing many years ago.. it was called Saga frontier. Multiple characters who all have their own uniques stories that are not affected by others stories, unique battle system and over arching world where you can explore even after the games end. To be honest octopath traveller isn’t really new, different or ground breaking at all for squares line up franchises. It’s just a saga series game with a different name and given proper marketing and released at a time where it can’t be overshadowed
Octopath is clearly a spiritual successor to the SaGa series. In fact it most closely resembles Romancing SaGa 3. The series was pretty experimental and never sold particularly well, most of which were never officialy localized. Out of all the reviews Ive seen only one has even mentioned the series and that would be HappyConsoleGamer.
And before SaGa Frontier there was a game that never made it stateside, Live-A-Live, that had multiple main characters that had their own story. Of course, eventually after their stories finished, there was a major reason for them to join up, but until then they don't even inhabit the same genre of story or world. You have everything from a caveman trying to protect his girlfriend to a psychic giant robot pilot fighting monsters and stuff. Seiken Densetsu 3, which came out in '95, also had a system where there were 6 potential main protagonists, and at the start of the game you chose 3 of them to be your party for the rest of the game. The first character you picked was the primary hero, and the characters you didn't pick would just show up occasionally when it was narratively relevant. There were even 3 different main antagonists to connect 3 pairs of characters. man, i really wish seiken densetsu 3 would get released here, that game is so damn good.
I've got to agree with the criticisms of having random encounters. I never realized how much I hate random encounters until I played Chrono Trigger. It too has small areas but it does combat encounters so much better.
I believe that they should’ve done the story like Secret of Mana 2 (Seiken Densetsu 3) where the character’s stories intertwine which allows them to interact, but that game is an action RPG, so it would be a bit harder to do that
I actually like that the stories don’t get bogged in long, long exposition and every party member has to comment on the current situation. It makes JRPGs a slog. I liked playing Chrono Trigger but there were times I wanted to skip the chit chat and keep moving. Octopath is the first JRPG I love playing. Chrono I really liked, but started playing it last year so I don’t have rose-colored memories like I will with Octopath. I also feel Octopath has better combat than Chrono, and dare I say it...slightly better music (and even if chrono were orchestrated it would be hard to beat octos soundtrack.)
3:53 I mean 10 hours is the length of an entire game a lot of the time, but at least that’s not as long as the length you have to go through in xenoblade chronicles 2
As a huge RPG fan, I actually dislike people who try point out that a game's story/experience only picks up after X amount of hours... If a game's story doesn't hold someones interest within the 1st 3-4 hours, they have every right to have a negative opinion and an understandable one at that. A story game should consistently draw in the player, make them constantly want to see what happens next, enjoy the STORY. If that is the main part of the game (which most RPG's are) don't make the excuse that the game get's more interesting 20/30/40+ hours in. It should not take that long for a player to become interested in a game. This could also be said for many other things too. Battle systems, mechanics, characters, features. If someone doesn't enjoy the game after the first few hours, then I feel that their negative opinion is more then justifiable and doesn't need excuses made for it on "why they think that" or "they clearly didn't get to a certain point in the game". RPG's/Stories can be interesting and enjoyable within the 1st few hours.
I haven't found it grundy, yet. I did get bodied by the chapter 2 difficulty spike (Tressa's boss), he was hitting me harder than I could heal or break, but I went away, did some side quests and bought new gear, gained a few levels and took him out with a nice level of difficulty. The only thing I can see people calling a grind is levelling inactive party members.
Thank you so much for shedding light on people giving bad reviews for mechanics that actually make sense And are a fresh take on jrpg's! I just got octopath traveler and it is one of my favorite games now. Has an AMAZING narrative for each character
1) I am an (arrogant) masterthief, the most skilled in the world and people know me, and im also very skilled in combat. 2) A rich mansion owner sets up insane guards etc to secretely lure in thieves that assume they have large treasure 3) ofc i go there and reach the "treasure"...its one blue dragonstone out of 4, the others are missing 4) the butler appears and beats me and puts a lock on my arm 5) the owner explains to me they lured a skilled thief on purpose so the thief can find the other remaining 3 stones, the butler found the blue one already, and if i find them, they will remove the "shameful" lock on my arm WHAT KIND OF STUPID STORY IS THIS??? 1) If the butler already could get one and he is as skilled as i am, then let him go get the others? 2) why do i care about a stupid band on my arm so much, that i travel half the world for their stupid stones?? 3) why do i just not remove it myself, and im a masterthief, it should be easy to remove it...ffs...or at least steal the method to open it from the butler 4) who stops me from just stealing the stones for myself, surely they are worth more than the burden of having the lock on my arm... 5) why do they waste so much money on guards (half an army!!), instead of just buying their way into the stones...or straight up buy the talent after a competition, no need for shady stuff 6) why am i being submissive to them, and actually travelling half the world, exposing myself to all this danger, without payment or reward, instead of overthrowing them?
Watching old videos about nintendo switch is so fascinating. Because in hindsight, its crazy decs werent making games for the console right at the switch's release. It was a lackluster launch day. i do vividly remember that there was uncertainty and skepticism around the practicality of the switch. Its almsot insane now to think we even questioned it.
Justin Moseley He wants to break down the dumb points that reviewers have given this game . He’s angry / confused that reviewers are saying this about this game when they never touched the chapter 2s . They don’t have the right to review this game , just give their opinions.
Andruis Maximus seriously dude what the heck. Are you having personal issues and need to vent because this seems a little excessive...........or are you doing because love seeing people's reactions.
Andruis Maximus It's okay to not like his content, and not like where it's gone lately, but...wishing death on him?! Are you serious?! Okay, you don't like that he's gotten shouty in his newer videos. That is fine, I won't rag on you for that. But you think he deserves to die for it?! Please tell me you're not serious, because if you are...well, that's messed up. That's all I can say.
I remember the 7th saga did something similar, but in that game the other characters you dont pick at the beginning can become your enemies or allies in your journey
Wood can you look into Saga Frontier on PS1, it's just like this game made by Square. I only point this game out because it's the Grandpa to Octopath. Like seriously Octopath is almost a spiritual successor in terms pf the way the story and characters are handled.
Eh, I'd say it's more the father to Octopath than grandfather. The actual Granddad to Octopath would be something more like Live-A-Live or Seiken Densetsu 3 on the SNES.
About that grinding thing, I never had to grind except once. For the most part, my party consisted of Ophelia, Cyrus, Therion and Tressa, swapping Tressa for whoever's story I was doing. I also focused on specific characters after completed my party's second chapters. The only time I had to grind and am still grinding for is *that* sidequest. Not gonna spoil anything, of course.
I don't think many have done the final secret dungeon yet either, which I understand. You have to look for it and it requires completing all eight stories as well as two series of side quests, and even then you have to look for the guy to start it. But oh boy, is it a crazy dungeon. It's a true gauntlet of boss fights, 8 hard battles and a ninth that is just off the charts. That you have to complete without saving. It also connects the stories of all 8 Travelers in a very unique and unexpected way. It's riddled with deeply satisfying lore.
honestly, i was bummed about the lack of interaction between characters but when you shed light on it like this, i see it differently and can appreciate it. it's like, instead of one main character being focused on and some side characters thrown in, each character is equally important and has their own thing
My ONLY wish was that I wished the traveler interactions were voice acted. I would have loved to hear these traveler actually conversations vs reading them
You actually have to grind to be able to beat the secret final boss, being avalable after compliting the normal stories. Before fighting against this final boss, there is also many information about characters from the stories of every of your 8 main characters, and now with a connection to each other.
*My team* 1.Protagonist: Thief (Therrion) 2. Cleric (Ophillia) 3. Magician/Scholar (Cyrus) 4. Warrior (Olberic) (You need to use all the characters, as progression in the game takes place through chapter completions of each eight, individual characters)
Yo Wood, even though you don't fancy Xenoblade 2 that much, you should give the Torna DLC a shot. It's getting its own physical release as a standalone game, so you're probably gonna have to get it anyway for your collection. It's decently long, but not as much as the main game, so you wont require a huge time sink to finish it. The battle system is going to be a bit different, so that's worth checking out. And the director himself talked about in an interview recently about how he's going for a mature, adult theme with the story, which may be enough that you'll enjoy the story of it. And since you don't plan on finishing Xenoblade 2, you don't have to be worried about spoilers for the main game (It's a prequel story with a mostly different cast). And it will also give you access to options for the main game that fix problems you had with it, (such as turning off enemy aggro for high level enemies, etc)...but that's a whole different suggestion. Anyways, check out the Torna DLC when the physical cartridge releases in September.
I'm glad you addressed this and I think you make good points. I still don't know how to feel about this game. I haven't gone back after beating the 8th Chapter 1
I just wish the game was actually your "main character" going around this world helping out other "main characters" with their own trials and tribulations, but instead of those main characters just experiencing their story it was YOUR main character (the character you started with) experiencing the other's story as well as their own. So each time play through you're watching the stories unfold in a different light. One where you see how Primrose sees the event or where you just see Cyrus's view of Primrose's story. It's just disappointing to see that even though during the course of everyone's story that you have your entire team and when you fight your entire team is with you, but they have no say or conflict with each other during the stories so you might as well have forgone everyone and just went through the story solo. One of the reasons why games like Final Fantasy VI or Chrono Trigger, which are games that seemingly inspired this game, are so incredible is because you can see all the different interactions these characters have on one another. Just imagine, Cyrus and Tressa have their chapter 2 set in the same town together, imagine if you got them both and they went to town together and suddenly their stories are no longer separate, but now they're a traveling duo. It's a shame that isn't what transpires, but it would have been neat to see if that was the actual case in the story. Where these characters aren't just bumbling nobodies doing their thing, but actual characters that lend each other a hand because they care for one another. Do you really think Therion would actually join the group so easily? Or would he be more like Shadow and only join the group for a fee and abandon the group if things got too hairy? Yeah the whole problem with Octopath is small, and the game is still incredible to look, play, and listen to, but it's such a disappointment to see that these characters don't really do much with each other.
I had to cancel my pre-order 😢 because it still hadn't come! So I either have to download it or get it somewhere else! And Breath Of The Wild... takes up like 19 GB and BeatEmUps likes Dunkey... this is the greatest!
This reminds me of Bravely Default and they give you an option to listen to party chat with each other I always listen because I want to experience the story fully. Can’t wait to play this soon.
I think the battle system is not a grind but people need to realize it’s more of a strategy based combat system. You need to pay attention to the turns, your ability to break down an opponents shields and your own break points and abilities. You can’t just attack because then it probably would become a grind. As far as the characters experiencing their stories alone, I actually imagine them together as the party of 4. Maybe the other 3 are in the background or in the next room but I always imagine the other 3 somewhere to back up that character. The travel banter makes me feel like they are all friends helping each other along their own journey. And the fact that they are friends despite their different personalities is a magical thing. One of my favorite travel banter thus far is when H’aanit says she doesn’t like the idea of thievery but she will put aside her judgements because they are comrades. And the fact that travel banter only happens amongst the party members makes this game incredibly replayable while at the same time frustrating cuz I never want to miss the dialogue of this game
I’m level 30 on my 4 characters, have all the job shrines and applied the jobs to my party. I still can’t beat Olberic’s last boss on chapter 2 and this is my first chapter 2. Grinding is a must so good on you for not having to grind. Maybe because you started with another character’s chapter 2?
I've played the demo of this game but I don't like it after 1 hour and a half. Xenoblade 2 looks interesting however. Should I buy Xenoblade? Never played jrpg before
yaya iachata Xenoblade Chronicles 2 can be a difficult play if you're not going to be invested enough to put in the hours. If you have a PC, try getting Chrono Trigger (either on Steam or emulate it). It's a classic game, plenty of people love it. But most importantly, it's pretty easy to play and get into. There's little to no grinding, and a full playthrough can be done in 20 hours or so. Compare it to the minimum of 60 hours you'll need for a bunch of JRPGs, and it'll be easier to digest.
I honestly thought I was just being picky, but good to know others had an issue with random encounters as well! Though I'm pretty used to it in other RPGs, it felt very jarring to have them in Octopath. I'm walking along finding treasure chests and suddenly pulled into a 5 min battle. More often than not, I forget where I am in the map and walk away from my original destination, realize it and go back the right way, then have another encounter. The nondescript mini map certainly didn't help.
Andruis Maximus hes a nice guy full of positivity i don’t understand why you’re saying what you’re saying but i can only hope that its a joke. The guy never did anything to you to say that about him
Since you did a follow up, I'll do a follow up too. Got about 14 hours logged which isn't much in the grand scheme of things. BUT the stories for each character open up a lot after the 1st chapter, and they become so much more cool in my eyes. Tressa's story is my favorite so far. Her chapter 2 was awesome. The grinding to get the characters up is still a problem, especially if you start with a core 4 and wanna swap em out. I tried with Alfyn mostly, and I just couldn't do it. I didnt want to dedicate the time or resources. Which is fine. I liked the 4 characters I chose. So both my main issues kinda got resolved I guess? BUT the problem of having the characters interact is a little weird. It got to the point where I was thinking to myself, "do these characters actually interact with each other?" Then I hit the chapter 2 sequences, and the travel banter hit. Reminded me a lot of Fire Emblem Awakening the way they did it. So that also got resolved kind of. Still an awesome, good looking, and fun to play game. Gets better as you go.
I'm with you on all these issues! Just got this game a week ago after watching your review and haven't been able to seperate myself from it. Don't get me started on those snow and water effects, GOLD!
PLEASE STOP SHOUTING! YOU MAKE INTERESTING VIDEOS DON'T THERE IS NO NEED TO CONSTANTLY SHOUT TO MAKE A POINT. BTW OT is a terrible game. There's no manual to speak of and the sprites get hidden behind objects and the camera is unmovable. Paths are hard to see. I used the demo and couldn't get out of the first town. Wound up going back and forth multiple times before I gave up on this game. It does look good though.
“No manual”? Press X to go to the Menu. Go down to Miscellaneous. There’s a tutorial section with everything you need, like how battles and the Break/Boost mechanics work, Skills, Jobs, Path Actions of each character, general tips, and more.
A personal gripe, for me, is that a lot of the assets from the game, do repeat themselves quite often. A lot of time, I was asking myself "Haven't I been here before?". But still, it is a must for old-school gamers who grew up with the SNES or who love old-school RPGs. :)
The only big boss battle I had problems with were the gods that you fight in order to unlock the advanced job classes. Each one has a specific theme with the way they are designed to fight and it makes the battles that much more enjoyable when you find that one combination of characters and classes that finally puts them down. I still haven't finished all the characters yet, so I probably set myself up for easy mode when it comes to finishing the different character arcs.
Late to the party, but discovered your channel today. I agree with you. I think some people are finding the game too "formulaic" : it's 8 medium stories about 8 travelers that meet by chance on the roads of a fantasy world, and the whole game is build in this eight-folded way, from the characters to the cities and areas...so I can see how people can feel it's too "artificial". But it didn't bothered me. In fact, it reminded of a game I played on the SNES, Romancing Saga 3, a strange game where you choose one character among 8 at the beginning and can recruit other characters in the world to just...explore. You can ignore the other starting character if you encounter them later and recruit other seemingly random characters, and the overarching story, while it exists, is told exclusively through exploration, random NPC dialogues, items, dungeons and boss themes and looks, with almost no cutscene. In that regard, Octopath Traveler is this concept pushed a little further and fleshed out, but the thing is, it leaves a lot more to the imagination than your classical "grandiose story" J-RPG, and it really spoke to me as a pen-and-paper roleplayer. These eight characters are typical P&P RPG characters, the good sort, with some amount of background, and a goal, but they all are adventurers first, set on the roads and meeting other travelers along the way, they're not broody loners or chosen ones or world saviors...just people joining forces to travel in a dangerous world full of wonders.

Ugh, that made-up olde worlde English pulled me right out of the game. I’m sure it sounds wonderfully quaint to non-native speakers though.
People saying it’s a grind fest? It’s a jrpg, like what did they expect?
That's like playing a stealth game and bitching about the combat. It is a stealth game, I know dishonored pissed on what a stealth game is, but yeah similar point.
When I think of a grind fest I think of the old monster Hunter games and having to fight an extremely over powered monster multiple times to get a single material to make a single weapon
Xombie
I know right
Xombie, actually it's too EASY. I'm always way too high on xp levels for each boss.
I pretty sure those people are just rushing the game so whenever they hit a boss die and go back to a area to aka to grind they get bored after a few seconds

When people said that Octopath Traveler is "grindy", I wonder how many of them actually played a lot of JRPG.
Ian Hsieh this!
Um I finished persona 5 and never had to grind once
I think my grindy we mean combat feels meaningless and we are spamming attack until we have 3 charges every battle
Or played bravely default....the grinding in that game is infinity and beyond
You've Been Gnomed persona 5 makes the grind the actual game, fusing personas - social cards etc. you just don’t notice it.

Why do people skip dialogues ?
@@elprimooo3235 muh laziness to read is the reason why
Witz If they don't want to read, they should play games like fortnite and minecraft. Dialogues are a part of the game in RPGs.
@@elprimooo3235 well you aren't wrong about that
Yeah, my little brother always skips dialogue in games. It infuriates the heck out of me.
Don't you just hate when people say they hate JRPGs and turn based, but then tell you that they love kingdom hearts and Pokemon. Like wtf????

Lalo No offense, but you should've included that in your first comment. Don't mislead people and then say later your were joking or "being sarcastic".
Takii then turn down the volume? Lol
I didn't really notice it but now that you've said it I've noticed it and now I'm annoyed
In all honesty you can play the first 3 hours of the game for FREE, I think playing said demo will tell you whether or not to buy it than someone else's opinion.
labrynianrebel didn’t know there was a demo until I saw this comment .
labrynianrebel Exactly. It was the deciding factor in why I bought it
This has been my view. Anyone can download the demo, play it and if they like it then they can buy it... if they don't they can delete it so their is nothing to loose. Honestly I wish more games did this.
That's why I didn't buy it.
Lazer Crotch see thats fair and how it should be
A lot of people throw around terms like "grindfest" without even knowing exactly what that is.
The last time I've been really forced to grind (Not counting Pokemon) was when I played Bravely Default...........I've refused to change job classes until I get the ones I've loved in the demo
Big Mistake
Those are probably people that run from every fight...in their lives lol haven't played the game yet

TheGebs24 Then why do the characters go with them on the other chapters if they don't interact. Would have been better if that was taken out
My problem is that they just get together without any thing, i mean its kind of weird how they decide to tell random people their life story and join them just because
" i mean its kind of weird how they decide to tell random people their life story and join them just because"
Have you ever played an RPG before?
I'm so glad this game is doing so well.

Using this method you will obliterate pretty much every pack of mobs early on, while traveling the map to collect your other characters.
mjw665 I guess his gameplay is just trash?
Did you watch him? It wasn’t that he had DPS problems. It’s just how long the sequencing takes, for him to kill a frog it took a minute of gameplay.
ikr
I watched the whole vid of Dunkey's. Yeah its slow for just the first character or two but if you went my route it gets much faster.
Saviourself he isn’t having a hard to time, he said it takes way too long and is tedious to do the most basic of things(he was fighting a level one frog and it took forever for the sequence to initiate)

Man, I've got to play this game some more... I haven't run into any Goombas or a Snorlax, yet!

My issue with this game is the danger level is not really accurate. Even when I am trained to that level, the monsters still seems damn tough.

RE: grindfest,
I actually thought I had this issue as well and then I realized that Cyrus' 1st trait reduces wild encounters. Once you disable this trait, you level on pace and there isn't any real grinding required.
I slowly starting to like this game, I finally finish the story of one of the characters, and I would also like to address some of the complaints show here:
1.The lack of a main story: This is still an issue to me, LiveALive did something similar to Octopath Traveler many decades ago but it was still able to link all of it 7 stories and create an overall plot by end of the game.
Have you completed the entire game? Did your thoughts on your first point about a lack of a main plot change at all?

Love that he shouts cause it shows his passion ! Don’t change who you are ! Also curious how this game compares to chrono trigger?
SherlockHyde yeah, I wish more games would integrate this type of thing.
"Grind-Heavy?" I dunno where that idea comes from, but I've had quite the opposite effect......I didn't want to gain XP at some point because my Lv 60 party already kills every boss in chapter 4 with almost no effort
yep. especialy if you have a nuts. alot of nuts
Okay, I need to like this more than once, because I knew there had to be SOMETHING that puts the "this is such a unique concept" to be an utter lie.
The first time I saw OT . I did notice it was kinda similar to SaGa Frontier .
I've got to agree with the criticisms of having random encounters. I never realized how much I hate random encounters until I played Chrono Trigger. It too has small areas but it does combat encounters so much better.
Primrose is best girl
Ophilia best girl
I also feel Octopath has better combat than Chrono, and dare I say it...slightly better music (and even if chrono were orchestrated it would be hard to beat octos soundtrack.)
just imagine Therion breaking in a house with the other 7 characters + beasts and guided/allure townspeople

I mean 10 hours is the length of an entire game a lot of the time, but at least that’s not as long as the length you have to go through in xenoblade chronicles 2
You make me think back to when I was playing Final Fantasy X on PS2. That was probably the longest game I completed. Worth the time though.
sixfittyonembitties that game is good and it isn't even that long. At least the main story isn't. I replay FFX every now and again^^
thebahooplamaster man I must be really slow if you can get through every chapter 1 in 10 hours. It took me 24 hours.
Xenoblade chronicles 2 I've put 242 hours into. Definitely the game I've put the most time into
Jrpgs like octopath and xenoblade chronicles 2 are supposed to be long
As a huge RPG fan, I actually dislike people who try point out that a game's story/experience only picks up after X amount of hours...
I love your eccentricity Wood, keep up the good work man.
2) A rich mansion owner sets up insane guards etc to secretely lure in thieves that assume they have large treasure
3) ofc i go there and reach the "treasure"...its one blue dragonstone out of 4, the others are missing
4) the butler appears and beats me and puts a lock on my arm
5) the owner explains to me they lured a skilled thief on purpose so the thief can find the other remaining 3 stones, the butler found the blue one already, and if i find them, they will remove the "shameful" lock on my arm
WHAT KIND OF STUPID STORY IS THIS???
1) If the butler already could get one and he is as skilled as i am, then let him go get the others?
2) why do i care about a stupid band on my arm so much, that i travel half the world for their stupid stones??
3) why do i just not remove it myself, and im a masterthief, it should be easy to remove it...ffs...or at least steal the method to open it from the butler
4) who stops me from just stealing the stones for myself, surely they are worth more than the burden of having the lock on my arm...
5) why do they waste so much money on guards (half an army!!), instead of just buying their way into the stones...or straight up buy the talent after a competition, no need for shady stuff
6) why am i being submissive to them, and actually travelling half the world, exposing myself to all this danger, without payment or reward, instead of overthrowing them?
Watching old videos about nintendo switch is so fascinating. Because in hindsight, its crazy decs werent making games for the console right at the switch's release.
Snorlax...god I love you wood!...ahem, I mean your Excellency:)
0:17 “1 in every 20 switch owners have bought this game...” but bro, you got 2 copies...

Great video tho! 😂
honestly, i was bummed about the lack of interaction between characters but when you shed light on it like this, i see it differently and can appreciate it. it's like, instead of one main character being focused on and some side characters thrown in, each character is equally important and has their own thing
This and Breath Of The Wild are the two best games on Switch. Can’t wait for the next installment.
My ONLY wish was that I wished the traveler interactions were voice acted. I would have loved to hear these traveler actually conversations vs reading them
Dragon Quest IV did exactly what this game did in terms of story, you just couldn't choose the sequence of characters.
You actually have to grind to be able to beat the secret final boss, being avalable after compliting the normal stories. Before fighting against this final boss, there is also many information about characters from the stories of every of your 8 main characters, and now with a connection to each other.
Absolutely loving this game! So far, my favorite character is Cyrus.
My favorite challenges in this game are the boss battles to acquire the secret classes. Such long fights, but the jobs are so worth it
shout shout let it all out.. these are the things I can do without
come on... im talking to you... come on
Dont fear your tears.
*My team*
1.Protagonist: Thief (Therrion)
2. Cleric (Ophillia)
3. Magician/Scholar (Cyrus)
4. Warrior (Olberic)
(You need to use all the characters, as progression in the game takes place through chapter completions of each eight, individual characters)
Lol, you do yell!
I'm glad you addressed this and I think you make good points. I still don't know how to feel about this game. I haven't gone back after beating the 8th Chapter 1
This is a chicken wing. This is a Applebees.
True
Come aaaaaan
Octopath traveler?
MASTAPEACE
Beatemups: *Talks about game*
Half the comments: MY EARRRSSS OOWWWWW STAAAAAHHHP SHHHOOOUUUTING 😭😭😭😭
Best game on switch. Better than botw and oddessy. I'm head over heels for this game.
searing abyss
OMG !! We have the same opinion! Except that I put oddessy above Botw
Agreed. I mean I love most Zelda games but BOTW just didn't do it for me.
Nope
Alexa Jordan
Same . Botw didn’t have that “ Zelda “ feeling
Yep the spouse keeps on saying " you have so many games on the switch why keep on playing this one." Lol
This, Ni No Kuni 2, and upcoming western release of Dragon Quest 11, boy its good year for RPG fans
I had to cancel my pre-order 😢 because it still hadn't come! So I either have to download it or get it somewhere else! And Breath Of The Wild... takes up like 19 GB and BeatEmUps likes Dunkey... this is the greatest!
Fable Joey why not get a good microsd for you switch? thatll give you more space
Nerdy Curls Yeah I just need to suck up and buy one they aren't crazy pricey... but still like a good 60 or 50$ for a big one
Get the physical copy
If you get the physical copy, it doesn't take up much space, plus you can play it without waiting for it to download
Fable Joey literally walked in to buy it. So many copies. I guess certain areas are always sold out
This reminds me of Bravely Default and they give you an option to listen to party chat with each other I always listen because I want to experience the story fully. Can’t wait to play this soon.
Please stop yelling.
I like the videos, I just struggle to concentrate listening with the 'loud speaking'. Just putting it out there.
Never played jrpg before
yaya iachata do you have a PC or console? I would recommend Final Fantasy XV or VII as a first JRPG
yaya iachata I just play XC2 20 hours, and I really like the game and the plot but from my poit of view. The game isn't the best jrpg
yaya iachata Xenoblade Chronicles 2 can be a difficult play if you're not going to be invested enough to put in the hours.
I only got the switch, I feel like any game is better on the switch which is why I'd like to give a go on Xenoblade 2
yaya iachata if you havent played breath of the wild do that 1st. If you have then do xenoblade 2 next.
I missed you 💕
Andruis Maximus woah woah woah did he like murder your family while you watched because you really really seem to hate him
Andruis Maximus hes a nice guy full of positivity i don’t understand why you’re saying what you’re saying but i can only hope that its a joke.
WHAT??? I CAN'T HEAR YOU! YOU'RE SPEAKING TOO LOUD!!!
Scott R. So it's a terrible game because you couldn't figure out where you were and got yourself stuck?
Allegrya I hate how so many people want games that hold your hand the entire time.
“No manual”?
Press X to go to the Menu.
Go down to Miscellaneous. There’s a tutorial section with everything you need, like how battles and the Break/Boost mechanics work, Skills, Jobs, Path Actions of each character, general tips, and more.
This is why some people can't be game reviewers...
A personal gripe, for me, is that a lot of the assets from the game, do repeat themselves quite often. A lot of time, I was asking myself "Haven't I been here before?". But still, it is a must for old-school gamers who grew up with the SNES or who love old-school RPGs. :)
I'm obsessed with this game. All the stories are connected, but you don't find out how until later.
