I think you can anneal the brass by heating it with a torch till its iridescent looking then drop into cold water. and as soon as it feels stiff re-anneal. could be wrong though never forged brass for anything.

Dan, we're you attempting to work the brass hot? Should be heated and quenched in water to aneal and then worked cold as brass is short when hot.
