    Best of luck to Jason, and Robbie.
    I came out in the 70's, then finding my love while working in a gay bar for over 10 years.
    I told my mother when I was 18, but she didn't seem to connect with me.
    When working at the gay bar, I invited my mother to come there, and she had a blast.
    But she couldn't accept me being gay, even to the day she died in 2005.
    I wasn't told of her death till 9 months later, my sister's didn't want me at her funeral, and they knew I was on tour, so they didn't want me to stop the tour to attend.
    Sadly, my family didn't accept me being gay, but being the only son to my mother, they kept me out of the loop.
    I'm 61 now, and I have no siblings left.
    I'm pure and clean of my life, and wouldn't change it for even my family.
    You cannot change being gay, and I'm proud of whom I am, not what other's think I should be.
    #LoveWins

I loved my mother and cared for her during the last years she was ill & in pain but she couldn't accept the lifestyle either...I know she loved me but her pentecostal faith just made it impossible for her to accept me..I'm 68 now & still feel "guilty" that I was a disappointment to them.

Sports I feel is the final frontier for a Gay person to come out in such a testosterone driven macho men ideal. And yes to those who shrug it off, it is a big deal to come out in sports which obviously affects everyone and makes the world a better place, except for some of the A holes below?

    I understand and empathize with the haters. It's because I have done my share of damage. I have been at both ends of the situation so I know most haters are just good people who do not have the right information and do not have the experiences to see the truth. Most haters are people who cannot empathize with persecuted minorities most of the times because of religion, culture or lack of information. It takes a lot of courage to realize that what has been taught to you from childhood is wrong. Religions tend to be totalitarian regimes that leave very little room for healthy skepticism so we just follow them blindly even when they go really wrong. Change will only happen through exposure to all kinds of people thru the media and through our personal commitment to educate ourselves. Empathy and love is the answer.

    The thing about "coming out" is that we are in a period of transition in our society where being gay is still an issue. When Jackie Robinson became the first MLB player, race was still a big issue and he wasn't even allowed to stay in many of the same hotels as his teammates. Now, no one thinks twice about blacks, hispanics, or Asians playing professional sports. In a few years, the same will be true for gays and lesbians. It's just a matter of time.

    a good story...

  • @bag3703
    @bag3703 6 лет назад +1

    Thank you for offering your story. I am a gay man who had a terrifying experience growing up gay in New Mexico. I was beaten in my home by a man who was a homophobic member of a church youth group. After winning my case against him through the DA's office, my case was used with others to pass the hate crimes bill in New Mexico. Since then I have experienced several hateful things at the hands of communities and groups based in hate and intolerance. As much as I would like to believe that things are changing, my experience will not allow me to embrace the idea. We still have a long was to go. For me, things did not get better. I am struggling to maintain a career in the medical field where my sexuality continues to be a point that fosters difficulty for me professionally and personally. I am living in a community where people are discouraged from even talking with me and, as I have been told, people are told they aren't encourage and are shamed, because they shouldn't be talking with "the gay man." I have taken to doing activism work to help to educate people on all facets of life that are not geared toward affording all people a good and peaceful quality of life. Again, thank you for sharing your story and being a proponent for change. I also would like to say that you have clearly been blessed with support systems that have not failed you. I am still waiting for equality and peace in my life.

    ”especially in Europe*
    What?
    We in Europe have opened the doors for all gay and lesbians to follow. I am so proud to be a gay european and not american. America still has equal rights issues, even Malta has legalised gay marriage. So please give us a break!

    • @CalifaJohn
      @CalifaJohn 8 лет назад +6

      +Christopher Moffitt Who are you kidding? Gay acceptance varies in different parts of Europe just like it varies in different parts of the US. Eastern Europe is worse than the worst part of the US, and even parts of Western Europe are not that advanced. I love Italy, but it is really behind on gay rights legislation. France was very slow and very resistant to marriage equality. Massachusetts and California are ahead of the majority of European countries. I have a friend who was beaten and pushed down a flight of stairs in Paris in an anti-gay attack.

    • @FifthContinentMusic
      @FifthContinentMusic 8 лет назад +1

      +John Francisco Wherever in Europe that gay rights are being stymied you can bet that the bloody Roman Catholic church has something to do with it. Italy and France are but two examples.

    • @CalifaJohn
      @CalifaJohn 8 лет назад +3

      Fifth Continent Or worse, the Eastern Orthodox church. At least the Catholic Church has a stance of non-violence, while the Eastern Orthodox church sits in silence as Russian gay people and others in Eastern Europe are physically tortured with impunity. This is not a Europe versus the US issue. It is an issue of secular freedom versus religious fascism. The struggle in the US, as in Europe, has been entirely based in religious groups trying to rule over our modern secular systems of government.
      As for Christopher's comment, all of the US has marriage equality, but Europe as a whole does not. Several European nations would have to develop basic freedom of speech first. I am all too familiar with Christopher's brand of European chauvinism, constantly expounding on their superiority when they have not really considered the facts in a balanced way. New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and other US cities have long been important centers in the international LGBT rights movement and continue to be today. We're all fighting against the same problem.

    Robbie Rogers story is more inspiring to me than Jason Collins. For one thing Rogers is still in his prime he's only going to be 26 he can still have a successful soccer career. He was on the United States International team, he competed at the Olympics, and he won a MLS cup in 2008 with the Columbus crew. Rogers didn't come out to get on the cover of Sports Illustrated or get interviewed by Oprah. Rogers is more courageous to me than Jason Collins he didn't come out to cash in.

    This reminds of that short film that's called "Marc and Jordi (gay storyline)" and I mean, it's almost down to a tee how similar this is... Like what is possible to have happened afterwards... If you're interested go watch it, it's on youtube and it's only about 14 minutes long but it gets really good

    Whole new world for him now, wonderful for him! So many straight people out there can't comprehend that gays and straights are different from the start as far as the attraction. So because they aren't attracted to the same sex and are very attracted to the opposite they don't understand its not the same nor has it ever been the same for a gay person. They can be alike in many ways but that is one of the things that is just different not bad just unique between gay and straight. I grew up the 70s early 80s grew up around kids that many were taught by their parents and churches that gay is the worse thing out there over anything. No internet to escape to very hard to meet anyone but internet and social media has opened a lot up to the GLBT world since that time.

    This is wonderful. Coming out isn't just about sexuality. It's about finding the courage to express who you really are to the world. Robbie's mother is beautiful.

    Coming out from who and really what you are is the hardest thing to do. But doing so, no matter how elite you are is the right thing to do.,You are doing this for your self and not for others.

    7'4 !!! Damn that's a big guy! Collins is handsome and seems like a really nice guy all around. He probably has the guys and girls lined up outside the door. Rogers is devilishly cute too!
