  • Welcome to the Beyond the Scope Podcast presented by ND MD. This podcast continues the mission of sharing the incredible stories and experiences of students, physicians, and healthcare professionals...but this time it's all about the things all those years of medical training doesn't prepare you for. Things that are beyond the scope of our practice.
One of my favorite episodes of this whole podcast, Dr. Laura Vater, a GI oncologist and talented writer regarding medical student and resident wellness breaks down some of the ways medical training has changed and must change for the better. Somehow I ended up being a case study in this episode as this is a very much "do as I say, not as I do" story since I recorded this only a couple hours after arriving back home from a redeye cross country flight.

2nd year med student from Nigeria here, the one thing I've picked up from all of this is to take my time and not over think things. And to also take care of my mental self.

Wow!!! What a pleasant surprise to see Dr. Vater on the podcast. She is one of my favorite physicians on social media, her posts have moved me to tears multiple times due to being one of the few people that cares for and advocates for trainees (who are often times invisible in the grand scheme of medicine). This was SUCH an illuminating conversation. Thank you Andy and Dr. Vater.

In Academic medical centers, you have to do 3 different types of teaching, research, clinical work to become full professors in faster way.

There is a serious need for reform in healthcare. The current paradigm is not helpful for patients nor providers. Carrying on in the current system will crash, not sustainable. Patients and providers are both getting sick of it.
