- Welcome to the Beyond the Scope Podcast presented by ND MD. This podcast continues the mission of sharing the incredible stories and experiences of students, physicians, and healthcare professionals...but this time it's all about the things all those years of medical training doesn't prepare you for. Things that are beyond the scope of our practice.
On this couch conversation type episode, I get to chat with a newly minted medical student, Will, as we try to pick apart some of the lessons learned outside of the medical textbooks. Also keep close attention to the story of why I ranked Yale as my #1.

Will is absolutely correct, the feeling of regret is stronger than gratitude. You talk about medical school purgatory and the stresses of being a traditional student. Though I can’t say I completely understand, I experienced something similar in undergrad when I realized I wanted to pursue medicine. Taking friendships, relationships, and my own health for granted. Setting unrealistic standards of, “what is success”. Telling myself that depriving myself of basic physical and social needs was for the greater good. One of my favorite statements to make currently in undergrad is, “oh, things will get better next semester” or “things will get better next year” and most famously “things will get better when I’m in medical school”. In hindsight this was a reflection of a lack of gratitude and definitive action. The reality is that there are so many “checkpoints” in becoming a doctor that should be looked at opportunities to grow. I emphasize for traditional students because they have a “mold” as you said that they’re trying to fit. Non traditional is going to become the new traditional for medicine. The life experiences they bring to their cohort and how they celebrate their differences embodies the characteristics of the physician needed right now. The stereotypically archetype of the pre med was someone who felt like space and time froze when it was just the had a mission and work to be done. This mindset can be both a blessing and curse. It allows us to delay gratification and embark on an arduous journey such as medicine but it makes us focus on the destination rather than the journey. The destination is usually last 9 seconds than you’re already concocting a new goal. We 13 years to run 9 seconds.
VISCA el Barca 🎉
