I work a lot on cars and Man you are giving me a good idea. been crawling under a car last 5 days and my body hurt. looking forward to watch your video's.
Hey thanks man. I am really looking forward to being able to choose my working high. If I want to sit for longer jobs like welding an exhaust. Or stand for something I need more strength. I am going to add tons of goodies and make it multi purpose also. Storage?
I just finished my pit and uploaded the video. I love it. They are so handy. Easy for family and friends to come over and use it. Most couldn't use a lift. Thanks for the ideas.
The need to do oil changes and the backbreaking ground crawls are legit reasons- but the biggest reason I built one is because I own a FORD truck. If I paid someone to do all the repairs, I’d be in the poor house
I am am a 61 year old newly retired bespoke house builder in the UK, I am starting my own forever house in January with an emphasis on garaging to store my vintage US hotrods and trucks, the build design occupies my mind constantly. Young man, this is a game changer for me, absolutely never thought of this idea and its so straightforward for me to do. I just wanted to say thanks for posting it, what a magic revelation. They say you cant teach an old dog new tricks, how wrong that is. Just wanted to say thanks to you and the original bloke you thanked. Now subscribed and will be binge watching the lot tonight. Wow, I have just seen the future🤣
@@ThinkBuildTest I have really enjoyed watching these episodes, I cannot wait to see the engineering bit, I reckon you come from an engineering background.
Don't know where you are, but here in Oklahoma City, they build "storm shelters" in the garage to jump into in case of tornado. Lots of oily slick storm shelter floors out here. Check with your local contractors.
Thanks for the heads up! This is definitely going to double as a storm shelter!!! We are also in the "Alley". Panhandle of texas. This is going to be a little more than what the shelter guys will offer. Stick around to see.
You should take out the hole floor and then build it way wider for tools and other things. And have a flip open grate beside the car to get out and in with a small ladder. Use grates for the hole floor
Yessir I am going to hollow out under the slab in the dirt and make a concrete mold with pockets for lights storage and hydraulic reservoir. No ladder or grates will be needed. The floating floor will be my ladder and will stay in the up position to complete the floor when not in use.
It would take allot of oil changes to equal the pain this pit is causing me! Lol I will enjoy it later though. I would probably spend the money to weld up a metal insert if I had to do it again.... Concrete work stinks.
Thanks for the advice I appreciate it! Definitely if I had a larger shop or had professional services I would want a larger one also. I have space constraints where I pull vehicles sideways into my shop. Also I am going to use a single X frame lift. Any longer and I would have to do a double the cost and complication of keeping it level. I Should be able to pull my transmission on my truck with this length. I will back it in if I need to service the otherend.
A pit?? You should see what I'm into right now! I bought a double decker car scissor lift that is going in the floor of my garage. I am excavating a hole 8fx16ft and almost 9ft deep! From there, it's tons of concrete and that thing sitting in my driveway will go in the hole! Yeah, I have a room reserved at the nut house! Looking fwd to seeing how you do your walls.. Due to the size of my project, I'm calling in the gunite guys to shoot mine. Figure 8ft high walls that's about 50ft long. That's a lot of concrete work. Subbed!
Be really careful of water, sewer, gas or electric lines. I learned to call your local number to have the utilities located. You might have to reroute some of them, but is cheaper than fixing damage. Mark the area where you plan to dig with white paint. And IF you have potential problems, ask the "offending" utility how deep they are. It has been forty years since I needed this info, but the call is free!
Yessir thanks for the heads up! I am out of the city with my own well and septic I work on those myself. Electricity is overhead and comm lines are easy to identify. I guess there could have been an abandoned oil field line but its a 50 year old shop. Great advice for anyone though!
No sir there is going to by a hydraulic lift for a floor like in the video. We will be using oil buckets. I do allot more than change oil thats just the most common verbiage used for this type of pit. I am going to trick this thing out. It might be the most advanced hole ever............ jk but seriously.
Pits have a nasty habit of turning into a miniature lake. In rainy weather they attract ground water. just a thing to consider and hope,,,nope not me .
I worked at a service station ocassionaly that had a pit that flooded regularily when the weather was bad. In time the owner had a sump pump system installed , just sayin :)
Thanks for the heads up! I live at 3600 ft in desert climate wells are 400ft. Besides that i am going to have the pit filter to a hole with a sump just incase our region reveals it was once a garden of eden and wants to revert back....😉
I am 70 years old and fix cars for a living in my garage with no lift. I drive most cars onto a 2x4 so I can see under well enough to place jack. I use an assortment of different jackstans and have never had a problem. You youngsters make me laugh at how much you complicate life instead of moving around and staying fit.
I still drive a truck with roll up windows and no power locks the world has way to much stuff it doesn't need other than to employ people to fix crap we don't need

Good for you. I’d prefer to have a pit so I can have the proper leverage for certain jobs and avoid the hours of blood, sweat, tears, thrown tools, and curse words.
What would could you use a pit for?

Glad I could be an inspiration. You can see what to do and what not to do. As I find all the pain points and victories.

Pits are great, always have been. Hope this turns out awesome for you and all....Love the shirt 🎵!
Hey thanks for the comment. I am super exited. I would rather have one for my dually over a lift anyways. Yeah man RDR! Lol

My tip, from experience is to make the pit as long as possible. You need all the length you can get.

So you just gonna drain your oil into the hole or what

Yessir you sound like an amazing worker!
But if you had a pit would you still crawl on the floor.... Keep watching this is going to be allot more than a hole.
