    As everyone has stated below, Excellent job of teaching old and young alike the easy and foolproof method of bleeding a hyd clutch 👍😎. IF (big if) IF I were to add anything it would to add some anti-seize to the threads of the cover screws. As stated, water ~ moisture invades brake fluid at a molecular level and H2O is readily available anyways. Steel and Aluminum are dissimilar metals with the presence of the most common electrolyte, electrons will flow and well, you know the rest. Once the cover is off and the reservoir is empty, clean the screw threads, and then coat with a small amount of anti-seize. Run them in & out of the housing body a couple of times, and clean off the excess anti-seize that can get everywhere. Screws and housing are now ready to go back together when the bleeding is done, without worrying about getting anti-seize in the fluid reservoir. I like to use anti-seize on a number of steel/AL thread match ups. Things what I consider Not Critical Torque wrench values. Lubrication of any sort on threads can have an effect on actual torque applied to bolts and such. Just my .02 cents only. Great video as usual 👍😎🤠

      Hi buddy, thanks for your input, just something that might interest you with your sensibilities on anti-seize, some time ago I discovered Wurth AL1100, often referred to as Alluslip, it's a silvery white in colour and just the aluminium version of regular copper anti-seize, works really well and combats some of the issues of galvanic corrosion!

    simple job, but still satisfying. I know the conventional way works but i have to say that i've developed a great preference for bleeder wrenches that have a one way check valve in them. Just crack the bleeder valve and work the lever and/or pedal and when you're done close it and done. Super easy making an easy job even quicker! :)

      Good call on the bleeder, there are some great products we can use now, but I do like to pass on the old school analogue method for those who may not have the gadgets... thanks for your constant support, it's always good to hear from you buddy!

    Some clutches don’t use brake fluid but instead use hydraulic mineral oil so virtually never need to be changed.

      @@Moonfleet41 Just found out it's a little more complicated you have to take the lower front cowling off and remove the vapor canister and it's a tighter working area but the concept is the same

    I just done my brakes with new pads on my Goldwing 1500.. just getting to my clutch!! Done clutch on my 1986 Honda 1100 , fluid just dried out and out in new seals in it… month ago! 1986 Honda 700 was completely done in spring but this winter, going do forks rebuild.

      Hey buddy.. if the clutch fluid vanished (as is not uncommon), then it doesn't "dry out", it usually indicates a leaking slave cylinder seal and the fluid is going into the engine oil... if you've replaced the seals in the slave cylinder then you've already fixed it, but if you only changed the master seals then maybe keep an eye on the fluid level ?!, if it drops again then you know what it is... also helps to change the oil of this has happened, but im sure you already did that too.. Just saying, i know you know your stuff, hope you don't mind.!

      @@Moonfleet41 … I don’t mind at all!! What you said made sense.. I certainly keep my eye on the fluid level.. I was boggled why sudden the clutch quit.. there’s no leak external so assuming internal… decided do the seals while at it.. it is mind boggling. Reason I said dried out is cause many fluids is mixed with water in factories, cut the cost. Years ago, when this crap started, I found couple brakes froze when left outside. Since then I’m always skipical when I buy more brake/clutch fluids. You make lot more sense though, I been watching my oil and clutch fluid . I love that bike as it’s classic and powerful. Doesn’t hurt repeated advice as class 101!! We do forget… Lol

    Thanks for sharing. I have a 1985 golden wing that has sat for years. The clutch feels like a brake lever. I'm hoping bleeding will do the trick. Otherwise I'll wait for rebuilding video.

    Questions: why does this fluid and brake dito really need changing? What happens to it over time? Where does the water contamination really come from? what does a "bad" fluid do, or don't do?

      So clutch/brake fluid is hydroscopic, it absorbes water. The more water it injests the lower the boiling temperature becomes, if it gets too much water it will start to rust your entire brake system from the inside out

    You may know, my old man has a 1985 Gl1200 and the clutch works great until the bike is hot and he stops goes to drive off after maybe 30 minutes and the clutch won't engage

      Ah, so true. The nicely timed 'twist & go's are indeed a great buzz; but it's usually the 'Oh shi - too late' - cough, phut, wet-dog wobble & stop with freestyle splits' that tend to remind you that old pumper jet diaphragms are rarely your best friend in dense traffic : )

    That looked easy, nice video... My old VF400 had a hydraulic clutch. I had that bike for many years and never even changed the oil or filters. Those were the days :)

    Hello Del, cancerous dave "not a stunt rider" Coates here, excellent video as always.. The bandit is no more. Now with a hyosung gv650 (sv650 in drag) very underrated bike. Current project is to fuel inject it (later ones were, this is carbs) using throttle bodies from an sv, and a speeduino... I'll keep you apprised... 😂

      Blimey mate.. i didn't know you had one of those, i saw one at a bike meet a few years back and the chap told me what he paid for it brand new, the guy next to him had just paid the same money for a 7 year old Gladius.. had a good sniff round it for a while and was amazed at the build quality for the price.. it's no worse than bike built maybe 20 years ago, most of which who are still on the road today...!!! love the fact you can rob SV and Gladius parts ! Korean, like Samsung LG and hyundai...Suzuki gave them free reign over the parts bin after they wanted to up the unit price they charge suzuki for building their engines...it is what it is, goes well enough and much easier for a short arse like me.. 😂 😂

    Cool video Del.. Clutch fluid was nasty.. I need to get another motorcycle lift. My lift is a Handy air lift but I'm thinking about getting an electric one this time like yours.

    Great video as always. These gave me the confidence to do my own on my ‘96 Trophy. What came out was filthy black! One thing though, whenever I pulled in the clutch lever, a literal fountain would shoot up out of the reservoir. I ended up having to put the rubber gasket cover back in place every time so I didn’t get fluid on everything. That didn’t happen with either of the brake reservoirs. Is that normal, or am I in for a more in-depth rebuild?

      No, that's not uncommon, brake and clutch reservoirs are the same thing, just a fluid pump...they can all squirt up fluid when you pump the lever too.. that's why i covered the bike with a blanket.. as long as the system is operating normally once the caps are all back on and buttoned up it should be fine.. check the fluid after maybe a month and see if it's black again.. if so, it looks like your seals are wearing out, so time to chuck a seal kit in the master, (then may as well do the slave to..! )

    Great vid and perfect timing i need to do this on my bmw r1200rt mu but aparently i need to use mineral oil in my clutch but not got a clue what oil to buy

      Hi Mark, the mineral clutch and brake fluid (also used in Harleys) is generally referred to as DOT5 so take a look on the reservoir cap, if it says use DOT5 fluid stamped in it, then that's what you buy... it's easily identified visually as it's generally purple in colour or a shade of blue, rather than yellowy clear.. but if it says DOT5 on the reservoir cap, and DOT5 on the bottle, then you're good to go!

      Hola, no dejaste tu nombre! Los síntomas que usted describe podrían estar relacionados con el contenido de agua en el líquido del embrague.
      El líquido de frenos y embrague absorbe el vapor de humedad del aire, esto significa que cuando el motor se calienta, el líquido del embrague cerca de las partes calientes del motor comenzará a hervir. Esto produce microburbujas de vapor en el líquido del embrague y la palanca se ablanda.
      La solución es simplemente lavar y cambiar el líquido del embrague... esto probablemente solucionará el problema.
      Todos los líquidos hidráulicos de frenos y embragues deben cambiarse cada dos años durante el servicio por este motivo.

    G'day Del, I bled the clutch on my GL1500 yesterday and I bled using your method. I left the lever cinched to the bar overnight, but I find very little pressure builds up, certainly not enough to disengage the clutch. Could the nipple be naffed and allowing air back in or just still needs more bleeding?

      Hi Steve.. if you have a problem with the bleed valve sealing then it would let fluid out, not so much let air in... so it's more than likely you have air in the system still.. and clamping the lever in over night is for brakes not clutch... pulling the clutch in for long periods could be damaging to the clutch springs over time... so just bleed it through again and see if you can get some more air out.. if it's still a problem then you could try reverse bleeding it from the bleed valve upwards using a syringe... that always works well.! If you don't have a big syringe for that, i used one of there..     Great video Del and a good description of fluid entropy. It is so easy to forget about how old that fluid is. That is the first time I have heard of loading the brakes overnight for crispness tomorrow, I will try that, cheers!

      Yeah, give it a try, it doesn't only work after servicing, you can do it any time.. strap the brake lever in over night, then feel it in the morning, it'll almost always feel crisper and more defined. !

      Im lucky enough to have a local recycle centre that takes old sump oil and automotive fluids, so i bottle up anything like that until i have a few gallons and take it over there.

      Most certainly, my friend. BTW, disposing of the old used fluid is never a problem in our house… I just sprinkle it in my mother in law’s cornflakes. Keeps her regular!

      @@garya3056 Ha ha, good luck with that, i hare fitting anything (other then my head) into crash helmets, the bloody liners never go back in properly... be careful with the fluids on the MIL, specially if they're flammable and it's a Sunday.. a few sprouts and the old Doris walks past a naked flame (or walks past a flame naked), and you could have a very embarrassing fire department incident to explain..!

      Sure thing, clutch is dead easy on these, which cannot be said for the brake fluid unfortunately the split system makes is a two person job.. that'll be coming soon and it is a bun fight..!

      @@Moonfleet41 Looking forward how you manage the brake fluid on such a long bike, Del.
      I tried alone with my longish scooter (Honda Silver Wing 600) and Combined Brake System, but my arms were way too short. In the end I got air into the system, as expected. With the help of another person it all worked perfectly again. New owner is happy.

    Dell in a previous video you put a lube on break piston to make it easier to pop them back in what was this please

      Hi mate, generally the best if red rubber lube, it comes supplied in the kit if you buy your seal kits from Wemoto, but of course you can also use clean fresh brake fluid mate, works perfectly well and does the job!

      Hi Dean, Yes it will mate, it can only absorb moisture when the lid is off, so just keep the lid on tight when on the shelf and it'll be fine..

    That's amazing...I've always heard that the first step of any maintenance to a Goldwing, is to remove the seat...and you were able to do all of this without!!! 😅👌🏼

      @@Moonfleet41 it’s a question of confidence really. It’s my dads bike he left me when he died. A tidy and clean unit but with some mechanical issues needing attention. Any advice before I pick up the tools? I have a stuck calliper piston on the front and busted fork seals. A new reverse lever switch needs installing and a rear brake master cylinder rebuild kit. Your videos are amazing, but picking up the tools is another beast altogether.

      @@Moonfleet41 I have a locked caliper piston which is keeping the right front brake applied, and want to remove my forks at the same time for the seals to be replaced. Is it better to replace the whole caliper or just get a new seal set and clean out the existing locked caliper piston? Would I need to bleed out the brake line first? Thanks heaps for the advice too, mate.

    Nice work del, I changed clutch fluid on a vtx1800 last week and noticed it had a float also but didn't put it back in as I couldn't see the point of it. what is the purpose of it?. Thanks

      Hi mate, like you I've only ever seen the float a couple of times, both times on Hondas... it seems it was an attempt to prevent moisture from reaching the brake fluid, which I don't quite understand how it would work because there's no seal there, the moisture can just weep down the side of the float, as it just bobs around on top of the fluid, there's no mechanical reason it's in place, so there's no harm in removing it and as you could see by my fluid, there was plenty of water in it, so evidently it doesn't work that well anyway!... but I popped mine back in because Honda put it there so why not!

    Excellent presentation as well as production and editing mate! Personally, I especially like seeing you demonstrate these simple tasks, with the little tips and techniques you share. The advanced skills like metal fabrication, lathing, etc are interesting, and maybe preferred by many viewers, but I like the simpler tasks. Hi to Penny!

      Thank you so much Byron, we're glad you enjoyed it, we are mindful of these comments as it indicates literally what our viewers want to see. It is difficult to bring small maintenance tasks on a constant basis without customers rolling through like a commercial shop, sadly we only have the bikes we own available to us to work on, so when their relevant maintenance tasks come up, we are sure to bring them to the screen! With the projects, they do involve some fabrication, but there are always repairs and upgrades included in those too, the current Husqvarna project will still involve some of this, even though it's a make-over, it'll get some wheel bearings, chain and sprockets, brake pads and an engine service... so, hopefully, we can tie that variety together...       @@Moonfleet41 yer, have a handbook Dell, Haines and workshop. Neither as clear as your videos, 😊 both seam to recommend taking stuff off for no reason, same goes for most car manuals too, so not just a bike thing. Was gonna buy at 89 pounds the compression tool for seperating upside down forks until I watched your video. 👌👌👌Much more straight forward way of doing things. Have done various right way up forks including my ZZR1100 forks, had the stanchions hard rechromed while in bits, much better than standard finish. A tip for testing the anti dive mechanism on gpz900r forks and such like is to sit on bike, press rear brake peddle and bounce the front end up and down, feel and see how much front forks compress, now grab the front brake fully on, bounce front forks again, should be far less compression now, good indicator of the anti dive condition. 👍 I tested all the rear linkage on my gpz900r and ZZR1100 by when on full stand lean over seat, grab the rear wheel and lift up and down, any play other than solid slight movement of suspension shows one of the many suspension components is slightly worn. Love your vids and your wisdom Del, have said before how I replaced clutch on yzf750 after you replaced I think a kawasaki clutch. 👍👍👍👍😉

      Hey Brother, good to hear from you, yes the old girl is mine, we bought it a year ago in the pandemic as a personal project, it was a total bargain, been left forgotten in the back of a bike shop for 10 years, panels and parts had been robbed, but we put it back together, new tyres, cam belts, replaced the old rotted out exhaust, fork seals, steering head bearings, and a full service... it's a low mile bike, just 63k so just nicely run in for a Goldwing, but as we had to replace some panels, the bike ended up three colours, plus lots of scuffs here and there, so flatt black was the best way.. It's the perfect touring bike for both of us to do lots of miles in any weather.. she'll never be for sale, who would want a raggedy old hound like this... but we love it.! Keep safe and smiling both brother.. D&Pxx

    Some clutches don’t use brake fluid but instead use hydraulic mineral oil so virtually never need to be changed.
