Van Halen Jump Intro song 1984 (played on Oberheim OB-Xa)

- In the wake of Eddie's passing, I wanted to post this recording of me playing the title song to the 1984 album, which is the intro to Jump. I always felt this song had an ethereal sound that stood the test of time.
Play the video with headphones to capture the nuance of the filter sweep and texture of the strings.
I'm playing it on the same synth Eddie used on the album, the Oberheim OB-Xa. There is some debate as to whether he used this synth or it's predecessor, the OB-X, on the album, but both sounds used in this recording were original factory presets on the Xa.
For OB-Xa owners, the presets are C4 (Resonance Sweep) and C3 (Slow Strings) in Split mode and dropped an octave.

Eddie was inspiring in both his guitar writing and his synth playing - among all of the rest of the songwriting, of course, and I always loved this ... I have an EPS 16+ with the OB-8 sampled... Now to figure out how to my baby to sing like the real thing.
It's not easy. I tried with other synths for a while and finally bought the synth he used to get the exact sound...
Not to bad mouth the master, but Ed didn't write the intro. A Doobie brother did.
The lower half is just so perfect! Well, everything is, but that really stands out. So good!
EVH was a musical genius. Thankfully, I was around to appreciate his brilliance. RIP Edward.

Since 1991 I have listened to this song every day, it is more than a simple sound, it leads us to infinity, Van Halen had a divine inspiration to compose it.❤❤

Super! Dass man das heute noch hört! Ich hatte vor 35 Jahren einen Korg Polysix! Mit dem habe ich diesen Basssound fast identisch hingebracht! War aber reiner Zufall! Einfach geschraubt und auf einmal! Zack, boing! War der Sound da! Leider ist der Polysix nicht mehr unter uns und ich habs auch nicht mehr probiert!
Dieses Video ist aber ein gewaltiger Anreiz, es mit einem anderen Synth zu probieren! Ich versuchs!

I'd like to take credit for the programming, but they're actually factory presets that are adjacent to one another (which I guess is how Eddie came to create the track in the first place).

Before the OBXa & 8 Eddie kept buying a different brand of synthesizer and it kept dying on him . He complained to a seller and the seller recommended the OB-Xa . By the way the title track 1984 is about a hour long .
That’s right! The synth I read that he was using to dial in the Jump patch was the Prophet T8, which kept overheating. I’d love to hear the original uncut track.

Can you tell me the keyboard splits please? I have the same synth. Do I use 2 factory splits for that intro?

Hey Carlos, yes you'll use factory presets. Expand the description beneath the video for specifics. Note that I also used delay and reverb as well as some compression to round things out.
is the xa worth it vs the 8? Bitch to maintain?
I had both and they both needed recapping to be stable, but the OB8 has less boards so you could say it's easier to maintain because there are less parts to potentially need servicing. That said, go with the OBX8 because it nails the sounds of both - they did a fantastic job with it. I sold my OB8 and now only have the Xa which will eventually be sold as well.

Agree! Loved Eddie’s arrangement. As stated elsewhere in the comments (and verified by what I read as well), what became the song 1984 was originally over an hour of Eddie playing / improvising while the tape machine ran on in the early hours of the morning.
