  • Julida Polka
Julida Polka was written in 1948 by Walter Solek a Polish-American musician. This was one of his earliest hits on Columbia Records and vaulted him the top of the polka world. In 1974 Solek was inducted into the Polka Hall of Fame in Chicago.
Polka music is often referred to as oom-pah music. The “oom” refers to the strong bass played on the beat by a tuba or other bass instrument, and the “pah” refers to the offbeat chords played by the accordion or other supporting instruments.
Polka music was brought to the United States in the mid 1800s by German, Czech, and Polish immigrants many of whom settled in Texas. This lively music and the accordion that accompanied it quickly became popular with the Hispanic population of Texas and soon became a cultural expression for these Tejanos.
This instrument being played is a British style baritone which is used extensively in the brass band tradition.
