    Man, super well done video. Ive been considering the HF lights, specifically the 3 inch LED pairs for my bike and the $100 4 LED spotlight and I can't find anything this comprehensive on any of them. This review of the Edge gives promise for the others. I appreciate that you actually measured the LUX and not just lumens and took the time to address things like the better side light spread. Not many people do such comprehensive reviews so your work stands out. Lookin forward to more!

      @@HectorHernandez-ij5yu I already had the light bar mount for my Wrangler JK. The kind that is tubular and goes on the sides and all the way across the the top. I used L iron and bolted them on the vertical part. The HB lights have 2 bolts per side. I just used 1 per side and the aloud the mount to swivel to the rear of the light. I did this to keep the lights from sticking up so high. It lowered them about halfway. Then I wired them up to each other. They pull a lot of power so you have to use a bigger gauge wire for the harness. I had all 6 on one harness but the wire was getting hot. I wired 3 and 3 then to 2 separate switches and It works fine now. I also flipped the lights upside down cuz the plugs in the back were to close to the windshield. You can’t even tell really.

    I think these roadshock edge lights might be answering the lighting need and desire people have been trying to satisfy. These lights aren't about marketing numbers and data points, these are lights people use & then they start caring about lighting quality.
    hotspots are ugly and take more effort for your body to process than smooth even lighting.
    The amber covers are totally the better choice of lighting, I know some people are crazy about bright white leds, but yellow & amber are so much better at night.
    People are over light bars, there's no good reason to use one when a single set of pod lights will outperform. right now people are nostalgic for old off road lights, but want modern equivalents.

    What is the color temperature like on the HF lights versus the BD ones? The blue quality of most aftermarket LEDs really bothers me, so I've installed Diode Dynamics yellow lights with clear lenses retrofit for a nice ~4k kelvin temperature. The periphery lighting of the HF RS6 lights has me really interested in putting a pair of them on the roof rack, instead of the LP9 sports that I've been trying to justify.

    • @4WDisLife
      @4WDisLife  8 месяцев назад +1

      I think the HF’s color temp is not too far from BD’s LP6, if you watch the video where I flip between those two quickly, they color temp to me seems similar.

    • @4WDisLife
      @4WDisLife  8 месяцев назад +2

      And don’t forget the HF has a 4 shooter, imo it would be a better choice on the roof of trucks, could literally get a whole row of those and still be under the cost of a pair of lp9s.

      @@4WDisLife Do you there is much compromise for the peripheral lighting on the HF RS4 lights compared to the RS6 or the Baja LP9? I have four DD SS5 pods on the front end of my 4Runner for forward lighting - I mostly want some light up high for distance and peripheral at this point.

    • @4WDisLife
      @4WDisLife  8 месяцев назад

      @@Telamonster2I actually would guess it’s about the same with RS6 in terms of peripheral lighting or width of the light pattern if you go for the combo pattern RS4. Combo RS4 has two wide pattern lens facing front just like the RS6 and probably similar in the side shooting. I think it’s a strong contender but I have not personally tested them.

      Hi, thanks for the comment, I would not recommend using these HF lights on the ditch light location (a pillar above hood) because they are so wide they will definitely blind the drivers and passengers when turned on. On the ditch light location, I personally would either put a strong spot beam pattern (minimal glare/reflection back into the cab) or a good evenly distributed and wide enough patter and have them aimed at the ditch, that way they'd not shooting light back into the cab. Also one of the reason I don't recommend using HF lights on the hood is they are very very heavy. Cheers!

    Excellent video with great nighttime comparisons. Baja is insane @ just under $1000 for two lights... I don't care how good they are... I wouldn't spend that much. The Harbor Freight lights are extremely impressive. I particularly like how wide the peripheral illumination is. Even though these are listed as off road use only... we all know many people who live in rural areas will use these to watch for Deer etc... and the wide illumination is perfect for watching Ditches. but they also have a powerful long distance throw for long distance illumination. BD simply isn't worth their over 3x higher price... I actually purchased the first set of the HF LED6's at my local store..when they had their 15%off special, no exclusions. so they were like $127 each, they know me as a regular so they allowed me to make two separate purchases to get the deal on each one (it was a 1 discount per person/per day thing). they never even knew they existed & had never seen them... I showed them the HF website listing, they searched the item number... and they had to go in the back room & dig thru their recent pallet delivery to find a box. I bought their first and only set. sold individually, but boxed in groups of two. I can tell you, even the box is high quality... the lights themselves are Hefty, they feel substantial. they have nice finishes & quality wiring. (important note: it's worth it to buy their premade wiring/dual switch (like $59 i think).... being these need a pretty heavy gauge wire for the amperage draw & have low & high positions as well as an optional amber backlight.... they must be wired with separate dedicated power leads for low & high... you CANNOT power low beam & them add power to the high beam trigger.. you'll damage them... each trigger wire must be independently powered one or the other at a time. I've had their cheaper road shock pod lights for several years & use them literally every day as a driving/fog light... zero problems, no water/condensation issues, no burnt out diodes or frosted lenses... those are their cheaper ones... still happy...I also have the Rigid pod lights, they are a bit brighter, work perfectly, but again, 3x more & the finish on those has peeled after 5 years. These new line of H.F. EDGE lights.. you can tell the quality is way better.. so I think these are gonna be VERY popular for the average consumer... most people can justify $149 per light (300/set) but it's really hard to choke down the thought of $980 (plus tax) for something not much better... and even then... it's a personal opinion if it's even noticeable for 3x more.... Harbor Freight knocked these lights outta the park!

    No denying the Roadshock is a good value. I would say that when installed, the side shooters will be prone to blockage by bumper shape and the other lights being alongside.
    What many enthusiasts don't always fully grasp is that @bajadesigns is really a RACE lighting company. When driving at speed, that additional "side shooter" is going to be a distraction to your peripherals.
    I will concede that this isn't as much of a concern for most consumers. However, this is why BD puts so much emphasis on their lighting Zones. Having installed, driven, and raced with a multitude of lights: they really are the top of the heap, but you gotta pay to play.

    • @4WDisLife
      @4WDisLife  8 месяцев назад

      I am not 100% following on the side shooter part, lp6 also has side shooter and is one of the brightest in the test, so if side shooter is a distraction, why would they even have that being race oriented lighting?

    • @CodyCrafted
      @CodyCrafted 8 месяцев назад

      @4WDisLife in a race or higher speed effort, your focus more on the horizon and what's coming. Anything that's in your "side shooter" area should be for verification or already too close to worry about at this point.
      When ripping with the Onyx6 40, for example, I prefer the combo pattern white center and amber on the ends. It focuses your attention on the center and looking ahead. Meanwhile, allowing you to see the ditches, but your main focus is up and forward.
      The LP is a great light, and like you said, HF put more emphasis on their side lighting than BD. It can seem to the lay-person to be an advantage, but a racer knows it's pretty useless. With mid to long travel suspension the speeds are a lot higher, anybody that rode dirt bikes knows you should have planned ahead already

    • @4WDisLife

    A long term durability test would be good. I run Baja Designs lights (light bar, pillar lights, chase lights) on my Raptor and I’ve done thousands of miles of high speed off-roading. The lights have never failed once. I’m curious if Harbor Freight would hold up the same. If yes, then at that price they are a very good option.

    • @4WDisLife
      @4WDisLife  2 месяца назад

      It is great to know that Baja’s light been working well for you through out time. For the Harbor freight I have actually done a torture test to one of my lights (run over with my truck, water submerged for 4 days and froze it and hammered it out of block of ice), it held up great for what I tested, and it has been almost a year since I purchased them and they still work well. I will definitely throw a long term review when it hits a year mark and keep people posted. Cheers.

    I think the side shot of the lights should be out in the field instead next to the garage door. I think you were getting some garage door light bounce off for the lux comparison. Other than that great video. The HF lights are impressive for the price. Better than I thought.

      @4WDisLife  8 месяцев назад +1

      thank you. I didn’t do the smaller Hf since it really only had one competitor being lp4, also it has two beam pattern options, I’d say if you have a row of four HF smaller pods, two spot in the middle and two combo on the side would be more than enough. I do like the backlight shape of the colight trailblazer but didn’t have a chance to test them out.

    I think the HF is better as an offroad light compared to BD. The foreground on the BD is too intense and will impair your distance vision. Compared to the HF that’s dark in the middle of the foreground, but increases width. The less intense foreground is filled with the low beams, so there’s no need for the BD’s foreground.

    Good review. Would have been interesting to see the Roadshock Edge 4 LED light rolled into this comparison. Not so much as a comparison with the Roadshock 6 LED or BD, but I bet it would have fared nicely against the Auxbeam and Knockoff LP6 and at only $210 for a pair...

    My conclusion: The HF lights are a little weak in the middle compared to the BD lights but the HF lights are clear winners in the side light area. The headlights fill in the middle where the HF are weak so I give the HF lights the win. Would like to know how the Auxbeam 20" lightbar compares to the HF lights. It is a combo of spot and flood and as impressive as the KC Hilite LED headlights are on my Wrangler, the $37 Auxbeam lightbar out shines them.
    For anyone who has had both, why use a pair of lights over a lightbar? The pair of lights has 12 total LEDs and my lightbar is 18" of double row LEDs with many flood lights and spot lights.
