If you feel like this buff is somehow familiar, some of you probably have seen it in live gameplay or on a Twitch stream, even though it's unused. I mapped one of the actions for the Pontiff Knight as a Stand, Cold as Ice, to use the buff in the Jojo mod.
Interesting how the animation for the cast looks like Vow of Silence. Even the pontiff knights are casting miracles, so where's the miracle build old man?
That honestly makes me wonder how much Zullie's content would benefit from an auto generated voice. There have definitely been times where I've been watching he stuff on my phone, look away from the screen for 30 seconds, and realize I've heard nothing but ambient music. She probably wouldn't want to mess with her current style though
My guess is they were either deemed strong enough already. Or because it’s un-buffable on the players side they wanted to be consistent. Also the scythe buff looks a lot like the frostbite buff WA.
It may have been a combination of things. It wasn't finished yet and they ran out of time so they decided the knights were good enough as is and just disabled the buff.

1:06 damn that line by Will from Fresh Prince still hurts even after all these years, that was the most gut wrenching scene I had watched at the time and this tiny little quip just made me remember that whole thing.
Considering the lore and previous games, that buffs colouration is clearly similar to Darkmoon Blade from DkS1, that also produced magic damage despite being a miracle. It also makes sense that the knights of Irithyll would posess the Darkmoon Blade miracle due to their association to Gwyndolin and the Knights of the Darkmoon, BEFORE Sulyvahn came into town. It was probably removed due to the confusion of them being called pontiff knights, and having them work under Pontiff Sulyvahn, and not Gwyndolin, although it makes all the sense that the order of knights served Gwyndolin before Pontiff claimed the right to rule.
Kinda headcanon, but it's like they can do this, they have this knowledge and ability to buff their weapons with DMBlade, but since they serve under Pontiff, they either don't want it no more, due to corruption of mind, or - less likely - they don't want to be seen using this miracle, since the Gwyndolin is gone and they have a new lord.

I remember going through the catacombs and thinking: “huh I haven’t encountered an annoying enemy yet” and then when I arrived at Irithyl it took me 13 tries to beat a single pontiff knight
I wonder if the buff is a remnant from when the Fire Witch was a boss located in what is now Sulyvahn's arena. To give that amount of damage buff to a regular enemy who is already quite fast and can easily gang up on you was probably thought to be just too difficult and cut despite being basically finished. I was making the assumption that the Fire Witch and Pontiff Knights share the same enemy AI and movesets, as the scythe, dual swords, and shield versions of the Pontiff Knights all do, but it actually makes more sense for them to be distinct entities. Still, I'd have to mine the code to see if the Fire Witch had a version of this buff, given that the animation for the scythe Pontiff Knight could apply to the Fire Witch's original halberd.
What about the unused Cathedral Knight buff where they use Deep Protection? Could you do a video about that? Or the unused Lothric Knight Crossbows attacks?
Does the scythe knight have a different buff animation too? I feel like I've seen them use a buff, but it seemed to increase their frostbite accumulation rather than add magic damage.
Yeah they have their own buff animation that increases frost bite damage. Tho that animation is different and lasts longer than the one shown in this video.

If I had to guess about the knights and Pontiff doing magic damage, it makes sense since the Pontiff was posing as a Darkmoon but was actually drawing his magic from sorcery instead of miracles, and I assume that the Darkmoon knights in Irythil are his underlings and therefore do the same
I remember first arriving in Irithyl. I just killed the bridge dog. I then started to progress and I came across these. I thought they were meant to be Semi-bosses. I struggled. It eventually took me to running past them and after multiple attempts I arrived at the church. I don't want to imagine if they had an extra buff.
