  • Joan Roughgarden - Jonathan Roughgarden was a respected evolutionary biologist at Stanford University, author of an argument that there are not only two sexes in nature (male and female), but a great range with numerous variations. In 1998, on an operating table, Jonathan ceased to exist. Joan appeared, a woman. In 2004, she wrote the book "Evolution's Rainbow".

    About TEDx, x = independently organized event
    In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

    I really enjoyed her presentation. Research influenced by personal experience is always inspiring, especially when it can give you a new perspective in life and subjects. That gold skirt was stunning too I might add, not that it has anything to do with the science of her presentation.

    The video description bothers me. Firstly, Roughgarden's transsexuality is a personal matter that is irrelevant to her scientific work.
    Secondly, she is not in fact saying that there are more than two sexes in nature; she's saying that there are more than two *genders* - that is, that male and female behavior are variable and not as formulaic as traditionally portrayed, and that three or more genders can coexist in a population. (This is a widely known phenomenon - what Roughgarden calls "genders", most researchers call "morphs".)
    She's done other work on hermaphroditism and the origin of biological sexes as well, but this presentation doesn't touch on that.

      Wow - "Jonathan ceased to exist." WTF! Joan very much does exist and she is brilliant (imho). I am not a huge fan of the TED format - she left a lot unexplored in this talk and it's due to the time she had to speak. However this is a great intro for those folks with an open mind but with a lot of bad information rolling around in their heads about the real diversity of gender and sexuality in nature. hopefully it stimulates many Google explorations. I know someone personally who discovered she was GNC (gender non-conforming) after reading some of Joan's work.

    Joan doesn't look in the least bit like a dude. How insulting of some commentators here. She seems very at ease with her gender expression. Why don't you listen to what she has to say, after all, that is what the video is here for. Take your discomfort or hatred towards transsexuality elsewhere. It's so old. What pointless expressions of antipathy. Such commentators would no doubt make snide remarks if the presenter was gay or large. Petty. The only dudes I know are college jocks. Ever look in the mirror?

    I find this research to be revolutionary. If society could take off the religious glasses and allow themselves to be educated on natural causes in reality, rather than using the god of the gaps argument, then we could actually expand our knowledge and stop the hate

      Its not so much about "sexual" diversity in nature, but more about how we understand the genders we attach to those sexes incorrectly. I only skimmed breifly though this video but I think the main point is that the egg and sperm dichotomy that traditionally is beleived to produce gender dimorphism in species is not the best way of explaining different paternal characteristics and patterns attributed to each sex or gender.

      She is showing way in which the model that most biologists understand sex, reproduction, and social dynamics is not entirely correct.
      She gives us a different perspective with which to look at reproduction, a different model to understand this.
      Her argument goes through the ways in which the model most commonly accepted no longer works.

    Studied biology, studied evolution, degreed at Stanford University and still can't understand the difference between the rule and the exception. Because in some rare species typical male and female roles are inverted, this doesn't mean that the rule found by Darwin is "absurd and irrelevant". Darwin himself always writes "In the MAJORITY of animals I find that ...". This is an insult to him.

    • @Alpha-Angel
      @Alpha-Angel 4 месяца назад

      Why you're so emotional? Lol
      Darwin's had many silly notions or interpretations about many species and she isn't the only one to call this out. You can check her interviews and channel showing that. You're not a biologist and just a mediocre flute player with no views.

    So this guy was a born a man, and suddenly 'decided' he wanted to be a female. So, he took that, some obscure history, and twisted science, and suddenly decided that male and female don't exist, race and gender are social constructs, and uses the argument that 'animals do it too.' Animals are only two things: male, or female. And if we are going to get into the animal argument, maybe we should legalize things such as cannibalism and rape, because animals and primitive cultures do it, too. Oh, what's that? Do I hear double standards?

    • @glennalombardi7032
      @glennalombardi7032 10 лет назад +14

      I find your comment ignorant and offensive. I seriously doubt that Dr. Roughgarden came to the decision to undergo a sex-change "suddenly". Also, in what way has science been twisted here? There are not only male and female in nature. What about bacteria? What about the fish and amphibians that change gender? Most of all, how in the world can you compare gender diversity to cannibalism? Why do you care if someone decides they would rather be a girl? She's not hurting anyone. In fact, Dr. Roughgarden is contributing to our knowledge of the world, which is nothing but helpful. I find it difficult to understand the logic behind your frustration.

    • @DrZoonotics
      @DrZoonotics 10 лет назад +11

      Dr. Roughgarden is an evolutionary biologist at Stanford University that makes sense when you understand biology. Your ranting shows that you have no clue about biology or science. Your ranting and aberrant conclusions make no sense, you have no idea what she was talking about, and you mix your ignorance with fantasy.

      +blacktigerpaw1 in alternate universe at the moment of conception your biological sex was flipped to the only other gender, would the "you" still be "you"?

    • @blacktigerpaw1
      @blacktigerpaw1 8 лет назад

      Belinda Cooper So, you're asking whether a biological mistake would still allow a human to be identified male or female?
      You're asking if biological sex - ingrained in cellular, genetic, and chromosomal evidence - could be flipped to gender, which in this case is a noun. The answer would be no. An impossibility, unless you're referring to situational hermaphroditism.
      That would take quite a lot of genetic malfeasance to flip at the moment of conception, implying that in vitro there were no mass collection of cells.
      As soon as the egg is fertilized, biological sex is determined. It can't be 'flipped' unless there's a legitimate coding error. It happens to those that have Down's Syndrome.
      Finally, you ask if the you will be still you. Biology cannot be wrong. If a white child, at the moment of conception, became black, would it be classified as a Caucasian or an African?

    • @Genderfcukbel
      @Genderfcukbel 8 лет назад

      +blacktigerpaw1 no it's not what I'm asking.
      I'm asking would you have the same identity no matter what vessel you where born in? A hypothetical question and a yes, no or maybe would be enough of an answer. Or no need to answer
