I’m almost 54 years old and never learned to properly chop an onion, you made it simple and affective. Thanks taking time to make this video. I’ll be using your technique for the rest of my life 😀
Sweet glad your still willing to learn!
@@homecookbasics you Make learning fun and easy
Just subscribed, basics in cooking makes whatever you're cooking, so much easier. Thank you.
My kid loves to cook and bake so when cooking with onion it's now super easy to peel and chop thanks to you

Thank you for subscribing... and so good in meatloaf!
You actually helped thanks!
Thank you man! ❤️

This works! thanks.
THANKS now I know it better ♥️
Thank you for this video I knew how to properly chop and why to leave the root on but I had never thought of cutting it in half before peeling it. I feel stupid and yet my life is much easier after watching this video thank you

Thanks I will have a onion cutting video coming out.
Just make my life a little bit easier, thanks 😊
Sure thing!
Thank you. You're an excellent teacher. I'm so sick of the "show off's", who move way too fast through the tutorial just to prove how bad ass they are. You, at least, are considerate of your audience and go slow and thorough enough that a novice, like me, can follow. Thanks again. I'll like, subscribe and watch more of your content. Take care.
Thank you, I appreciate that. I think its the way tutorials should be.
People’s need to be more humble these days. Keep up the good work!
Thank you
AWESOME 😎😊
Nice!!!

Thanks, very helpful. I dice and saute' a large pan of onions, peppers, and ham once a week for my morning scrambled eggs. That saved me from buying some gadgets.
Wonderful!
THANK YOU
Your welcome
Tip: for better cubes have 2-3 horizontal cuts too
Thank you so much I appreciate 😢 me this GOD BLESS YOU😢

Wow before your vid i hated peeling onions now its a breeze. Thanx even though im from the Yankees empire thumbs up
Nooo... not the Yankees.
@@homecookbasics lol great vid man
I have more info that will help on my website: homecookbasics.com/how-to-peel-an-onion/
Duh po to p
great video my dear
Thanks!
Can you teach me how to peel onion fast without cutting in half? But you can cut sten ends off but you cant cut in half.
Ace!
Extra tip: if you run the onion under cold water before cutting, it should reduce the eye stinging as well. :)
Great tip! I will try this.
I heard one where if you put the onions in the freezer for 15 to 20 minutes before cutting, they don't burn your eyes at all. I do it, and it works wonders.
Turn turning 3 minutes into 30 seconds with this day and age....
OH WOW! 🧅 Thanks Bob, I’ve never seen an onion cut this way, I struggle to chop them into small pieces because they are so slippery. Made my copping a lot less messy. 👏
Awesome, works for shallots also.
cuts half the onion away then proceeds to take away the biggest layer of the onion and calls that a trick, Eks-dee
How do you know which end is the root end?
It typically has little pieces of root left. The stem end has the same outside layer of the peel.
Its not chopping the onion that the problem , as I use very sharp Wusthof Cooks knife. No, its the brown paper outer husk layer that's fiddly. If you chop the onion but leave the husk layer on its full of papery brown bits. If you try and peel off the papery husk it breaks and leaves bits on the onion which you then have to use your nails to get underneath to hack off. Its a horrible job. I want an easy method so the brown papery husk comes off easily without hacking off with your nails leaving a whole clean onion. Has anyone managed a good method?
Thanks Bob - onion peeling is such a wind up
Yes, hopefully this will make it quicker for you!
Saw the Boston then typed this comment and exited the video 🗽🍎
But I wanted to know the easy way to keep the onion whole and peel it whole. :) I slice off rings for sandwiches, you see, and keep it in clingfilm until finished. All videos seem to show cutting the onion in half.
Just cut both ends and you can grab the skin and peel it off. You can also make a little cut on the body of the onion to get an end of the skin. Practice will make you faster everyday
stick a fork or knife in root end and take your propane torch and quicky burn around the whole onion, the dry paper will burn but not catch fire the rinse to put out embers and rub under water and the non usable paper part comes off easy and leaves the usable part intact.
What’s the best basic onion
Good old yellow.
cut the stem off . cut the onion half from root to stem , soak the onions in water for 30 minutes and peel the skin . it comes off in a jiffy .
Sorry man. That wasnt what i expected. I want that layer. Need to know how to easily get the inner skin off
Woow
Well in the restaurant, if you want to peel onions and then expect them to keep for the next 2 to 7 days, it's best not to split a layer. Then you have to be a little fussy about the peeling.. but you know, get a rhythm going and it's done. Are the restaurants.. they're so. I've been peeling onions for 15 years.. and someone with.. 'certain problems' can't handle it if you don't leave the onions to sort of wilt in the fridge, sloppily peeled. It's this way everywhere, you can't peel a onion
What if I don't wish to cut the onion in half?
It shouod be obvious but it is definitely frustrating and I hate crying everytime haha
So true!
Also, if you don’t cut the root of the onion off, the onion won’t bleed, which don’t make you cry in return!
Interesting I never put those 2 together. thanks
@@homecookbasics Learned it from a Gordon Ramsey video. I think it has saved me life!
Let go on cooking, try to cook food also it will be more fun to subribed😂❤
The tribute for gta 4 being 15 years old
I expected a 20 second video not 3 minutes lol 😂
Good tips but the video is really about how to peel and chop HALF an onion. I would like some mircale tips to help me peel dozens of whole onions for onion rings. Thx but will keep looking!
One part makes the whole.
Music ruins the video.
I hope you are using the bit you cut off from the stem. Otherwise you are just wasting it.
Nope, in the trash. I can tell you for someone that cooks everyday I have very little waste. You would not imagine how much food is wasted.
You sliced a whole chunk off the top. And peel off the top layer just because it's easier. My mom would kill me twice if I wasted food like that.
Might have been a tiny bit there. You could save them and toss them in a chicken broth or a vase for a soup.
Thank you ... great now i now how to chop an Onion
Please dont cut that much of the ends. Thats was a lot of valuable onion you just threw away. Lets not waste food.
Bro you wasted half the onion
I’m ashamed to be here
Lol
Not good technique. Lots of wastes.
So basically you're teaching people how to be wasteful with food by pealing off the food to get the skin off and cutting about 3/4 of an inch of onion off both ends. What a waste of food especially when there are much easier methods out there.
So I clicked on your name to see your totally rad onion slicing video but I couldn't find any content...how strange!
@@YllwNinja82 I know right? Imagine a world where people feel so entitled they expect you to have onion peeling videos on your channel page to compete with other amateur noob chef wannabes. Sorry, but momma didn't raise no flex man to seek RUclips views. She raised a man with proper life skills to not be wasteful. Besides, I have nothing I need to prove. Do you?
Nice!
@@SuperTime2Change just imagine... you wouldn’t be one of those people right...
@@SuperTime2Change no but it looks like momma raised a guy who goes to random youtubr videos to cry about how they cut their onions
Very sorry, to cut so much onion of with the ends and then to peel a whole layer of onion off instead of just the skin is not only extravagant but means the title of the video is somewhat misleading.
That's rather wasteful
What
Anyone who drags the edge of their knife across the cutting board knows nothing about how to handle a knife.
