Simmer down the flame and let them cook for another 10-15 minutes depending upon the quantity. *DON'T TOUCH THE RICE WHILE COOKING THEM. YOU DON'T WANT TO BREAK THEM.* 5. After cooking them, check them if they have cooked but lifting them and pressing on them. 6. If yes, turn teh flame off. And cover the rice. Let them cool for another 5 minutes without the flame. You don't want to cover the rice while making them. It'll make them mushy. 7. Drain the water out. Ratios: For one cup of rice, use 2.5 cups of water. This is for standard white rice. Water is never excess. You can keep adding it if it evaporates. You'll drain it out in the end. *Alternatives: Buy a rice cooker.*
I had never made rice before so I followed your recipe and it turned out pretty good, I added more water because it evaporated, im pretty sure I put to much water because the bottom layer of my rice turned a bit soggy so ill add less water next time. thanks for the help!
This is great. I've relied so much on my rice cooker to the point I forgot to cook rice properly without one. Goes to show that going back to the basics is always important. Thanks
@@poffydaisy5134 Well in many western countries rice is in fact a side dish. Their main dish is usually some kind of protein. That's part of the reason why ppl here can't really adopt to certain techniques that's used in places where rice is the 'staple food', like Asia. And I'll have to say there's nothing wrong with that. I personally think ppl should be allowed and encouraged to enjoy rice without going full on and make it a 'main dish'
this is the first video I've come across that actually explains it in an understandable, slow, clear, followable manner. thank you for making this in the style and format that you did!
I am not usually the type that would go to people or on the internet saying things like "I'm Asian" but, this had to be done. Your rice is too wet. Trust me, I am Asian.
Exactly, that's what I thought too. The rice looks okay, borderline porridge, but after the fork went in, it was completely mushed. Less water, less steam.
I completely agree. I like the rice to individualize as grain when it's finished. In my opinion, they've done two things slightly incorrect. The first thing was that they've used too much water. I always go 1 3/4 liquid for every cup of rice (I don't ever use brown rice). So, 1 cup of rice = 1 3/4 cup of water (chicken or vegetable stock is WAY BETTER, though). The second issue is how they've incorporated the rice to the water. You add the water to the pot _before_ the rice. You bring the water to a rolling boil, then dump in the rice, without stirring in the rice. After all the rice is dropped in one go, you stir it _one_ time so you don't release tons more starch. Once you've done that, bring the rice and liquid back to a rolling boil, reduce to simmer and cover for ~17 minutes. Turn off heat, move pot over cold burner grate, and steam with no heat for an additional 6-8 minutes. And, that should make the perfect white rice.
I was thinking that it looks wet borderline mushy. I can do that on my own! Best rice I’ve tried so far are baby basmati and sprouted short grain brown rice. 😜
Yesterday I spent about 20 minutes in an appliance aisle at Target debating whether to purchase a $25 rice cooker or a $200 one. In the end I decided to to not be impulsive and bought neither. Came home, watched this video and made perfect (or at least pretty darn good) rice last night. Thank you. I can hold off on the rice cooker for now. ;)
I am Peruvian and all our dishes are also with rice. Usually at home we prepare it in a rice cooker. We put a little oil and fry a couple of minced garlic. Then the rice (well washed) and if you made 5 cups of rice it is 4 and 1/2 of water, we add a pinch of salt and that's it, we like grained rice, not sticky.
1. ALWAYS wash your rice until the water is clear 2.while the rice is cooking DONT mix it 3.who needs a measuring cup when you have your hands 4. get a rice cooker and BTW that rice was so mushy Anyways this is how us Africans cook rice🍚😊.
Fredde This means if you measure how much water you need for the rice to be cooked, first you need to mix rice and water. Then you let your finger be submerged to the mixture until the tip of your finger touches the rice. To measure how much water, the water level must be touching the first or second wrinkle of your finger (depends on the breed of rice you are using) My English is so weird.
I agree with not stirring. My rice used to always come out bad until someone told me that. Usually with Mexican rice but hearing everyone say it about white rice I'm gonna start doing it with that also.
Bless you. I had all but given up on myself. My Jamaican ancestors, amazing cooks and Dutch pot magicians, had all but done the same. I can make curry chicken and stew peas, but my rice was always hit or miss. Next step: rice cooker. Then I found this video and made fluffy, delicious Basmati rice...twice. Thank you for saving my legacy.
"Yup no Asian uses measurements" that's because we're used to finetuning by our senses, not numbers on a book. humid day, soak for less time, use less water. how to tell how much water to use? when it's 1 pinky joint over the level of the rice in the rice cooker. who the hell needs measuring cups?
Lived in Asia for years, deep respect for how well the chop sticks are used. I did my best, but I refused to use forks to eat anything. They would sell rice triangles at 7-11, which was ideal for running long distances. The rice is seasoned perfectly. We do NOT have good rice in America. Rice overseas is delicious. Why
Yes I myself just made an attempt with the long grain and while I just put a tiiiiinnnny bit too much water. The rice still looks and feels excellent. God bless you for the instructions and guidance with this. I’ve got this saved and will officially be my guideline for future projects.
Too much water = become congee. We as Chinese eat rice alll day, we cook depend on personal taste, for example , I like medium hard. The rice cooker is better than manual pot
I'm going to be honest, I tried cooking rice once, and I ended up burning it. That was 4 years ago. On this very day, 12 June 2024, I decided to cook rice again and followed your steps carefully. I want to personally thank you from the deepest part of my heart! Today, I, a 23 year old managed to cook rice perfectly for the first time in my entire life! I feel like I achieved the most important thing in life, cooking rice... I couldn't have done it without you! thank you so much! 😂
@@winterwin6971 Either your rice cooker is really bad, or you've got the wrong setting. Usually the bottom is the same as the top. Rice cooker should have only 1 setting and if you use something with multiple settings like an instant pot or so, it should still has a rice setting. It should bring the water up to a boil (the rice is moving around and would not stick to the bottom) and after that it steams the rice (it should be the same temperature everywhere). The only way I get hard rice with a rice cooker is when I reheat my rice in the rice cooker (or if i use not enough water=crunchy uncooked rice). Since there is no more water, the rice at the bottom gets all the heat and until the top part gets warm, the bottom part will be hard (Tip: just use a microwave or fry it in a pan).
James Ryderal i guess it's a state where something is at its best. But you're right. Like how pasta should be al dente but there are those who prefer it soggy.

I add seasonings AFTER i cook it cause my country's food is so filled with spices and flavours already in it, its pointless to add extra stuff on the rice. 99/100 times i find people from asia just cooks rice plain without added stuff which sometimes confuses me why outside of asia people cook rice with added seasonings.

*Alternatives: Buy a rice cooker.*
or: wash it three times with your fingers, dump in the water and cook with a rice cooker

Same. Can confirm. I just eye ball it and it turns out fine lol.
It looked mushy and rice is suppose to be plain and eat with curry or fried chicken and ur rice cooker is ugly

5 cups is a lot of rice

@@willlastnameguy8329 We usually eat rice for lunch and dinner 😅
5 cups of grained rice. But could it be five cups of white rice??
1. ALWAYS wash your rice until the water is clear
2.while the rice is cooking DONT mix it
3.who needs a measuring cup when you have your hands
4. get a rice cooker
and BTW that rice was so mushy
Anyways this is how us Africans cook rice🍚😊.
Queen Mia Dennis can you elaborate what you mean with 3 ? How do you measure with your hand
And you wash rice stirring it with your hands. There was no starch coming outta that strainer smh
Fredde This means if you measure how much water you need for the rice to be cooked, first you need to mix rice and water. Then you let your finger be submerged to the mixture until the tip of your finger touches the rice. To measure how much water, the water level must be touching the first or second wrinkle of your finger (depends on the breed of rice you are using)
My English is so weird.
I agree with not stirring. My rice used to always come out bad until someone told me that. Usually with Mexican rice but hearing everyone say it about white rice I'm gonna start doing it with that also.

all the rice in the video is too mushy (in my opinion)
Those rice looks broke to me
I liked mushy rice more than damn hard rice (bottom of the rice cooker)
