Ive been waiting to binge watch this show, but with Gambit being killed off, i dont know that ill even bother with it. I hope im wrong, but it feels like Gambit was chosen to be killed off because hes the character the showrunner resented the most because of what he was
It feels like a necessary build-up for Gambit to reach the level of the comics. Comic version could touch Rogue while the show emphasizes how he couldn't.
Based on the latest episode, the show wants to be faithful to the comics. If that is the case, Gambit will eventually return. One of the comic book moments is Gambit revival with a power boost
I doubt the reason was that deep.
@genevieve7676 X-Men 97 has at least 3 seasons and has been faithful to the comic so far. It is more likely for a set up than for shock value

One of Gambit's iconic moment in the comic is his revival as the Horsemen of Death. Apocalypse is still around, but haven't make his return in 97 yet.
With the current events in the show, it wouldn't be surprising if the show teases Apocalypse at the end of the season
