  • If you ever talk to anyone from Michigan and ask them where they live, it's likely they'll show you the palm of their right hand and point to the relative position where they live in this mitten-shaped state.
In this video we're going to go to Port Austin which is located at the trip of the Michigan thumb. We've lived in Michigan all our lives, but we have never been to the "thumb" area. One of the "Pure Michigan" tourist ads featured a small geological formation called Turnip Rock that you can only visit from the water. So we packed up the kayak and headed to Port Austin.
We forgot this part in the video.
The high water levels also meant the surrounding rocks and the small beach were submerged, leaving no place to get out of the kayak to rest. All the land is private property, with the public rights only to the natural high-water line. And while owners allow you to stop and have a quick snack, you are not allowed to climb on any of the cliffs or the rock itself. Sadly, owners have had to hire security patrols to protect their property near this site. Please repay the owners' generosity by respecting their property and keeping this site open to future visitors.

Great video! You were there on a rare day when there weren't a ton of people there. It's cool that our landmark is getting seen by so many, but it's sad that a few people have had to ruin it for everyone by trespassing and leaving garbage around. It was also great planning for you to pay attention to the winds. We have to rescue sooooooo many people every year. I grew up in Pointe Aux Barques and I was part of the 2nd operation to cement around the bottom of Turnip Rock. Also, fun fact, the Pointe Aux Barques lighthouse that you visited was named that because the original survey team THOUGHT they were at Pointe Aux Barques township (home of Turnip Rock) but they missed the mark by about 10 miles!

Joe, glad you enjoyed the video and appreciate the compliment. We were very cautious of how the weather on the Great Lakes can change in a heartbeat and had been checking the wind and weather forecast for the week prior to going. Yes, we did get lucky there wasn’t a crowd, it did help that Port Austin Kayak was closed that day due to the winds. I think we only saw 6 other kayakers the entire trip. Thank you for your help with the cement work to save this beautiful piece of landscape. Loved your fun fact, thanks for sharing.

We forgot this part in the audio portion of the video, but did include it in the description of the video (but who really reads that). So maybe by posting it in the comments, some additional viewers might see it.
