- What if I told you one of Michigan's best kept secrets is location in Port Austin, Michigan? One of the MOST POPULAR things to do during the summer is to KAYAK to TURNIP ROCK.
Turnip Rock is a small geological formation located off the shores of Lake Huron in Port Austin Michigan. The kayaking route is roughly 7 miles round trip from downtown Port Austin along the beautiful coast of Lake Huron. If you do not own a kayak, I highly recommend Port Austin Kayak (www.portaustinkayak.com/) for all of your kayak rentals. A kayak rental for 4 hours cost $40, they launch you right from their property and is the best company in town! I have rented with them several times and can't recommend them enough!
Kayaking to Turnip Rock runs from Memorial Day to September. Dates make fluctuate as it all depends on weather and the water. Keep in mind, kayaking may be canceled due to bad weather or rough waters. Your safety is key!

Roughly how deep was the water around the base?
Thats going to vary year to year depending on water levels.
Any good food recs in the area?
There are a lot of mom and pop shops around. But my go to is always The Bank 1884. It’s right in downtown with pretty good food!
About how long did it take each way?
We have a 4 hour Kayla rental and we returned on the 4 hour mark. We leisurely kayaked there and was quicker coming back. It will all depend on your speed, kayaking level and the water. Once we arrived, we had Turnip Rock to ourselves so we stayed for over an hour to just enjoy.
How far from Ontario?
I am unsure where in Ontario you are at but from Windsor it is about 2 1/2 hours. You can Google directions from your location to Port Austin, Michigan.
@@TheWanderfulLifeofKayla Well my sister is in TO. Her stepdaughter was in Thunder Bay at Lakehead University. I and my family are an hour northeast of Boston by air. A quick flight to Beantown.

Are you allowed to get on top? I'd only go there if I could throw a party on the top of it. I'm thinking a grappling hook around one of the trees and just like gym class climb the rope up where I will then attach a rope ladder somewhere secure for everyone else to get up easier.
No you are not. The surrounding property is private so like I said you need to be respectful. The rock is protected so why would you think it would be ok to climb it as if you are in gym class?
