Chasing the Maiden Voyage: A First Look of Amtrak's Future Acela

- Hello and Welcome to Bessemer and Lake Erie 902! In this video, we follow the special movement of Amtrak's Next Generation Acela Trainset as it departs it's birthplace of Hornell, New York (Built by Alstom) and travels for further testing in Pueblo, Colorado. We will chase this train from the famed Letchworth State Park Arch Bridge to the LS&MS depot, on both the NS Southern Tier and the CSX Erie West Subdivision. @@rearspeaker6364 there are 150mph speeds between Providence, R.I., and Boston and reaches up to 135 mph in some stretches between New York and Washington with the present Acela's
@@tomy6917 Yeah but I think the Acela line goes up to 150 for only 7% of the whole entire trip (34 miles out of 457 miles) while the average speed between NY and Boston is about 65 mph.

It makes me angry when new trains have coaches that don't match the locomotives. The coaches have a different shape then the locomotive.
They probably did that to add more seat/width to the passenger cars.
I too noticed the difference in the bodies of the cars as compared to the power units. To me it just looks odd or was an after thought type thing.
It does strike an odd note but supposedly, they will either add a fiberglass fairing to help the profiles match, or continue the blue bar of paint into the locomotive/power car. Either one will improve the situation.

I'm glad Amtrak is making steps towards current technology and future upgrades. Imagine when they could run the entire route at 186 mph or better yet 220 MPH with the tilting system deactivated.

We never get anything like this in Charleston, let alone South Carolina. I see the comments below are panning the appearance of the Acela's engines and passenger cars. I think they're beautiful. I like the engines that are pulling (and pushing) it!

Who designed this thing? The coaches look different than the engines.
+Darryl Nelson Alstom designed this. I’m hoping the production models have coaches that match up better then the powercars. I’m sure it will cause some problems during testing with the extra drag.

@Bobby Brady the same metric can be said for the US. The US is a union that operates as a whole, ergo a country, but the states still have tons of sovereign administrative power. I for example live in Illinois, where cannabis has just a few months ago been made legal for recreational consumption. We also have adopted stricter climate change laws than the federal government, and also differ in tax code, education, and many, many other laws and regulations. Chicago for instance is a sanctuary City, made possible under Illinois law. States also albeit part of a requirement have their own militaries. Just like NATO, not all states are held accountable to keep this requiment, or to use it for intended purposes. There have been quite a few cases where states have threatened military action against one another. A famous case of this is the Toledo war. Bleeding Kansas is another less official example, but there are others for sure. Even travelling across states / International borders changes state by state, and when you cross over a state line, many issues become federal ones due to the differing jurisdiction. This is not common for true "provincial" status, as a centralized government would force cooperation between the administrative divisions.
There is actually a video on RUclips debating the status of the US as a country or a union.
Anyway, back to the original point, no you cannot refer to Europe as a country, but you can refer to the European Union as a union (as a whole, generalized population) in the same way we do the United States. Thus the Eurozone has its own commission of standard centralized regulations just as the US federal government does. In many way, states in the US actually have more power to modify or flat out elect not to accept regulations. In my own state of Illinois there have been instances where local rural gun owners and their respective local governments (counties, etc) have elected not to "allow" or follow proposed federal or state wide gun regulations.
@@BessemerLakeErie902 who or what drove the paint scheme of the newer baggage cars that don't seem to match anything? Oops, I misspoke. The baggage cars are painted in the same manner as the Viewliner II.
alstom is european company ,i thing that this thing with the difference between the lok and the cars is a deal of some americans.Alstom never do such a stuped thing.
New Acela is very futuristic, like 50 years ago - - finally catching up with Japan. And yes, it has some nice amenities. Great video coverage!

Seems like Alstom was able to go mostly off-the-shelf with this one. Good to see Amtrak learned their lesson with the original Acela - a custom train results in more cost, complexity, and development time.

Off the shelf but very new though, it's a significant departure from the classic TGV that dated back to the 1970s. All-new comapct powertrain and electronics, new powercar and coaches chassis. However the overall powercar architecture is still very much the same despite being much shorter: train driver door, side front traps, are still at the same place, same wheelbase between bogie axles. Alstom did not go with an entirely clean sheet.
The first Alstom TGVs have now all been retired after 42 years. Of the 109 trainsets, almost all have reached at least 10 MILLION KM. Trainset 06 reached a whopping 13 916 085 km (8 647 054 miles) between 1980 and 2019. Reportedly the highest mileage of any train. Amazing performance considering it's 1970s technology.
Sounds big? That's at most about 350 000 km per year. Whereas the newest TGV Duplex pile up to 800 000 km annually on average. Alstom Quality.
Meanwhile, in Britain, Alstom quality is catching on fire every 20 minutes.

YAY - Amtrak is FINALLY running cab units they way there are supposed to - back to back, not elephant style
OK mike.......that is done for OPERATIONAL reasons, NOTto please railfans..............if a train croaks in the middle of nowhere with nobody to troubleshoot the dead engine, it can be set off and the train continue with the second engine only...if the trailing unit were backwards, it would limit the operation to only 20 mph as the crew would be shoving from the cab being in the rear. Elephant style, they can proceed at track speed. And for the same reason the special has another engine on the rear....any place enroute where the train has to change direction, they can change cabs and run at track speed instead of a crewman directing a shoving move 14 cars to the rear.

I mean Amtrak can always give the Acelas to MARC when it's all said & done. We will have fun with them. We have with HHP-8s

Yes this kind of reminds me of driving past Baltimore on my commute and seeing a cruise ship there for training purposes that was bound for Hawaii, which would be its permanent port of call. Had Hawaiin flowers painted all around the bow and looked very out of place.

It's a wonderful thing that Amtrak is making this dramatic improvement in rolling stock. But what i think really needs to happen is that there has to be concurrent improvement in the trackage on the NEC. If they could improve the infrastructure - especially through New Jersey - there would be noticeable speed improvements on the NEC. Right now, between Boston and Washington-Union Station the best time on the Acela is just under 7 hours.

Great catch! Next Gen Acela looks like Bullet Train from the front. The Classic Acela still looks Good. I hope that keep some of the classic train sets around and not just moth ball them like the Euro Star did with the old train sets. We will see?

@@BessemerLakeErie902 Thanks too for getting some closeups. I'm fascinated by how 'petite' the yaw dampers are compared to the ones on the current Acela. Makes sense I guess, if the cars weight less. Less yaw to dampen LOL? I've been in a Marc Kawasaki bilevel with weak or malfunctioning ones - really shows why they are needed.

Well power cars with a different body profile to the coaches and a paint job taken from British rail in the 1980s. They say the Acela is old, not as old as the British HST trains and they still look modern compared with this

I hope Amtrak finds a purpose for the old Acela fleet perhaps on the keystone corridor seeing that as old as they are, they are still far newer then the amfleets.
