Amtrak's Next-Generation of High-Speed Rail

- At Amtrak we know the future of the Northeast Corridor depends on the investments we make today, which is why we are excited to announce the upcoming arrival of the next-generation of high-speed rail. The new trainsets will replace the current Acela Express equipment and begin service in 2021.
For this project, we are pleased to be partnering with Alstom, a leading global provider of innovative systems and equipment in the railway sector. Alstom will be building these new trainsets in New York State, with 95% of the trainset’s components being made in America, and parts coming from 350 suppliers in 30 U.S. states.

I hope this train runs on it's own rail line and not run on a fright line.
Well it wouldn't be politicly correct if this train was seen on a fright line :)
It is going to run on the Northeast Corridor which is owned by Amtrak. It will replace the Acela.
Northwest Railfan yes, true fact that is.

Brand new train using century old infrastructure
"Good"
it's really not that old. it's been upgraded and maintained throughout the years
Yeah let just replace all railway bridges/tunnels/viaducts every 5 years so its all new......are you f%@#*&$ kidding me.....people around the world use that kind of infrastructure that was built 50+ years ago.....cause i know this might be foreign to most modern Americans but there WAS a point in history when Americans oh I don't know 'BUILT THINGS TO LAST'!!!!! Also the concept of over engineering a bridge is a completely foreign concept to you isn't it? Why would a railway engineer ever only build a bridge/Tunnel to only handle what was currently available???? That is an incredibly stupid idea cause guess what once something only marginally faster/longer/heavier/taller came out WELP time to start over????? No railroad would pay for something with that short of a life span....railroads are all about longevity and getting long lasting value for their limited investment capital.
lineinf332 Could you link me to which TGV/Shinkansen/Chinese HSR have bridges and tunnels that old?
Lol @ NEC trains having to significantly slow down for and even stop for drawbridges. Ahaha
Our TGV (i'm french) run through old and new lines. High speed lines (speed over 200km/h, usually 320 km/h) are all new ones with new tunnels and new bridges. Between France and England the tunnel under the sea is totally new, thus making London 2:20 away from Paris ; city center to city center.

so pretty much this is shit that America should have had years ago. I love how they are presenting this as if it's totally new undeveloped technology. America's got a lot of catching up to do
They never said is was undeveloped or totally new concept. In fact in the video and in the news reports they explain that it's being used in several countries with a proven track record. With that being said it is new for the US.

Yeah passenger trains lol not any other trains
+howardkevinm we should really be getting Tesla's Hyperloop, except big oil and politicians are hindering development
You're updating the tracks too, right? Else they're just gonna keep being late.
They are. The Northeast corridor is already mostly owned by amtrak, over 80% of it, meaning they have priority over freight. All the upgrades being performed are at nec.amtrak.com/projects
It's never gonna be Europe. That project would be soooooo expensive.
Well, yeah, the shear comparison in land mass alone proves that. We have a lot more space than the EU. This is why high speed rail isn't economically feasible.
Some parts are upgraded. The part from Newark to Trenton, has the electrical capacity for trains to go 240.
The Andromeda I would LOVE that. Most of that track is straight and fairly isolated, as well.

Getting good train sets isn’t hard. The track infrastructure is the bigger issue here in the states. Outside the NEC and a couple other places Amtrak is at the mercy of the freight companies. So they don’t exactly have much dedicated ROW trackage of their own to run fast trains on. Even the NEC needs work, but it’s the best we got for now.

i like how the CGI train looks better than the actual one
Yeah?
That’s because Amtrak ORIGINALLY wanted to make their own train, but they jumped on another HSR project with a company in Europe to cut corners. Lol.
In reality, the train is a jumbled piece of crap. The reason the engines looks different from the coaches is because they ARE different. Two different models mashed into one.
The reason this stupid train is so late is because Amtrak was being used by Alstom as guinea pigs to test the train for the European company. They are just too prideful and stupid to admit it.
Honestly i like the prototype Avelia Liberty more than the actual
Why is this comment section so negative? Do you guys even know a thing about trains?! Before you judge, do your research on why America was late to high speed rail and why they don't have high speed rail. These "hold my beer" jokes just don't cut it.
Ikr. So many stupid people in the comments
the problem isn't the train but the rails it runs on. In order for improvements we need a grade separated dedicated rail line
dear American government and state governments, IT'S THE TRACKS THAT ARE THE ISSUE with the Northeast corridor, and American trains overall!! your new trains won't mean much if the old thoroughfares they travel keep them slow as the current acelas. I address America, because multiple freight companies and other organisations own the majority of tracks used by Amtrak
If there was a high speed section of track all the way from the bottom of the north east corridor to the top and high speed trains to run it, Amtrak would not not be so poor
You're absolutely right, the Acela has never been used to its max potential, the infrastructure is what needs the updating...not the Acela trains themselves!
yep, you do not wanna go to fast around Newark DE
Yep. In all likelyhood this train will be going over the same exact decrepit lift bridges that stop service to accommodate ponderous barges.
I find it interesting that you address this to America and not Amtrak for these concerns.
Well it is built by Alstom, the guys who made the Pendolino, so it should be good as that is super comfortable.
True. To me it's all under the Alstom umbrella.
its the SAME train like the french hight speed train TGV... stricly the same..
The difference between both : USA discover high rail speed when Europ use it since 25 years
It's not a TGV. But TGV-derived. This new Acela is a tilting train ( -> Pendolino tech), is an EMU (the TGV has two power cars coupled to un-powered coaches), and can have coaches added or removed easily (the TGV consists in fixed trainsets, coaches can be split only at a depot)
***** Yeah. However, I think that it may not be the greatest idea as the coupling isn't solid like a Pendolino\APT.
really? If it's a Pendolino derivtive it will be again two power cars with unpowered coaches. It won't, also, ever even think of reaching 220mph, that sounds like some top-class bs. I that thing even reaches commercial 300km/h that'll be already impressive.
you forgot to say. Price Rises 72%
We'll see...
I can't imagine they're planning to hike the price much in conjunction with more frequent service. Higher price = less ridership, and presumably they want to have the trains filled as much as possible.

One of my dreams is to one day see a vast network of high speed rails stretching across our nation. That would be so cool and an incredible improvement to our infrastructure. I’m tired of planes 😅
The US is far too large for a coast to coast HSR network. Connecting cities that are reasonably close is more realistic.
@@FFred-us9twyou do realize there is a whole interstate network right? Too large? How
@@omarguerra1838 I’m well aware of the Interstate system. But that’s not used for people in a rush. It’s almost 3,000 miles NYC to LA. A high speed rail line that went non stop at 300 MPH would still twice as long as a plane. And a perfectly straight line at that speed doesn’t exist anywhere in the world. It’s a fantasy.
@@FFred-us9tw no no I get you. But trains have never been around straight lines. What a train has that a plane doesn’t is its versatility. A whole network connecting all of America with HSR means many stations to middle of nowhere in between cities. Small towns etc etc. at insane speeds. Meaning better than car and for certain ovation even better than plane. Of course flying from one side of the country to the other is way better but people don’t make that trip every day.
I mean the interstate goes from east to west and north to south. Think about it when have you ever used the whole stretch. You probably The point is that it exist and that at any point you can use it.
Why spend 300 dollars to go from Omaha to LA in 2 hours plus airport times when with HSR you could pay 120 for what 4-5 hours? In car that takes 24 hours.
Plus just like the interstate Instread of using it to go from district to district in 20 minutes. I can use HSR from neighbor city to neighbor city in 20 minutes whenever I am not doing big long roadtrips.
I would argue US is THE perfect size for a super awesome HSR network

This literally changes nothing.
The only thing that Amtrak needs to change is the tracks. ;-;
Cryptic _ Ultron They can't do that it's a bit to late and to many other companies they share the same track with so they would also need their permission.
iFrostMoon They own the Northeast Corridor. All they need is money
This train is a great advancement for America. However, to really "launch" the high-speed rail industry in America, you must expand beyond the NEC into places such as the Empire and Keystone corridors. Infrastructure is also a problem. The Northeast's infrastructure needs upgrading to allow for higher speeds out of the new Avelia Liberty trainsets.
The Acela Express is the only Amtrak train with first class, but it is also the only without coach class. If the Avelia Liberty has coach class, that may increase ridership on the trainsets. Also, the old Acela Express trainsets shouldn't be retired. They could continue their lives on the Northeast Regional, Keystone and Empire lines.
I really hope Amtrak lives on and modernizes America's railway. Please, don't give up, and please, make America's railway the best in the world again!
DërKönigOpal yeah and the Acela is currently one of Amtrak’s few profitable routes so they should run it on the Keystone Corridor and as a hybrid between Liberty and Ne Regional.
America will give up and give Praise Thee Jesus to the Chinese, Japanese and Europeans for a job wekll done in their respected countries while accepting welfare checks from their won gobemint!!!!
I suggest the Hiawatha, it's already one of amtrak's busiest lines. Make an Express train directly from Milwaukee to Chicago and one that stops at every station. It's also only like a hundred miles and could be shortened to a one hour trip.
Caltrain is becoming electrified
Yeah the Acela is a train I absolutely love, but I've never ridden on. I can't justify the ticket price. I really doubt they're running the Train full all the time, so if they could at least add one coach car, they probably have massively increased ridership.
But really more than anything they need to update all the rails so that the trains can actually run at their maximum speed. Acela doesn't even get to max out, so this train will certainly not.
we also need to make the right to a little more efficient, I've heard that Boston actually has two or three stops just for the Acela with in one city. The Acela should be running two major stations like pain mainly, for local transport people can hop on the local Subways and such

It will still be an Acela that's not the official scheme...
acela is retiring in 2022 so we still got 3 years to see them

Considering all of the speed restrictions on the Northeast Corridor, much like the Acela, these trains will hit top speed for all of 30 seconds through Kingston then slow back down to Metro North speeds for the rest. You can upgrade tracks and catenary lines all you want. Good luck straightening out all the massive curves when buildings are in the way.
it's like buying a Ferrari and only having dirt roads...

They are fixing the problem the real problem is not Amtrak it is those DC bureaucrats and the Democrat Party since Clinton's time they have not given Amtrak their money it was Clinton who put Joe Boardman in there Boardman is not a railroad man he is a bureaucrat because of Boardman the Pioneer and Desert Wind got the axe because the Boardman the Northeast Corridor was not improved when the Acela arrived because of Boardman the Empire Builder is over-staffed overburdened can always late because of Boardman the regionals are always late because of Boardman the Zephyr is not reliable and it only serves a few stops and always faces outages when there are avalanches in the Rockies because of Boardman the Southwest Chief has not been rerouted and they did not negotiate with BNSF for trackage rights and they are being jerks because their own but that Robber Baron Warren H. Buffett because of Boardman long-distance trains are not allowed on the east coast in the sunset limited has not been returned to service all because of one stupid accident was caused by a tugboat because of Boardman the coast Starlight had to take up all the road and there is no way for it to turn around at the stations which are blocked by commuter trains and because of Boardman Chicago is a mass Metra is hording the rails and Amtrak's equipment is outdated unreliable and not efficient they are still going off the Democrats budget a budget That was supposed to be cut when President Bush took office but was reinstated when Obama took power only one project got done Englewood Junction is not the choke point in Chicago the choke point is Belt yard outside of Union station Boardman knows this and he didn't fix it because of three things and they are Metro the Federal Railroad Administration including CSX cause of a monopoly in Chicago and project tiger which is operated by Obama Joe Boardman has failed and has been kicked out of office Wick is now the boss he has spent most of his life at Norfolk Southern he's been there he served as an engineer he's been to Chicago he knows what it's like and he intends to fix it and he intends to fix the Northeast Corridor also and the whole system but it won't happen until Congress give them their money and abolishes project tiger and replaces it with a new Transportation bill with gives money to Interstate 11 Amtrak and all of the railroads in the United States project tiger was proposed by democrats key among them that Jack Mormon Harry Reid that liberal witch Nancy Pelosi Bill Nelson of Florida and Chambers in Connecticut others people who were behind that bill were Hoyer and Makolsky of Maryland and from Illinois Durbin and Obama himself. With Trump now the president and Wick now the head of Amtrak we are going to drain the swamp Amtrak is going to get her money and we are going to get all of our railroads back Amtrak is going to use every cent of their money to replace their Fleet and get service back on all the lines.
Aaron Peavler/Geomodelrailroader Railroad Photography still a slight issue. u still need money. politics doesn't help, but upgrading transportation systems costs a lot of money.
2016:I'm excited for USA
2024:I'm exhausted from USA
An very good train 👌🏻✌🏻 and the music too!🤑👌🏻🗣️
Everyone in the comment section: Mad about USA being late with next-gen locomotives.
Me: Is nobody going to mention that the train is goddamn SANS?!
RichDXtreme247 *[Megalovania intensifies]*
J
i dont get it. its just another eurostar train
Im from 2019 and this train isn’t out and the Chinese and Germans and Frenchs and Spain and Portugal and Japanese have faster trains.
Edit: The testing phase just began in 2020 lol
Ahnaf Kabir oh yeah i almost forgot about Eurostar lol
Ksparki oh but these trains can operate fast?
Nara Fire oh cool
You all need trains because trains are for poor countries... in the USA we use them to transport pigs and cows.
Ho Lee Fuk oh soo you say that everyone in USA owns a plane? And every country has a freight train. In Romania we have many freight trains but each freight train is owned by a private company. And your comment is stupid.
It has been seven years and all you have new are chargers.. that’s it… *We’re waiting*
It's so funny how the Acela can go 160-170 mph yet Amtrak won't allow it despite having one of the greatest safety records of any high speed train in the world, it's like they want us to be late
Nicholas Mulder they have a good record because their trains are slow as shit. Plus ever heard of the shinkansen? Not a single death and it goes 200mph+
Us railway isn't safe enough for those speeds
Nicholas Mulder Well the tracks on the NEC are over 100 years old, and so is most of the birdges, tunnels ect.
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the united cities of the I-95 Corridor, and to the Chevrolets for which we depend one nation under Petrolium!!!!
JM
By 2021, you mean 2121 right?
3131
9191
Meanwhile in Japan, it all already started back in 1964. LOL
noob168 SHINKANSEN YEEEE
Ummm well what if they are already working on it and 2121 sounds way to long
7 years ago……….huh
America's tracks: ------~~~--~~~~|_|------~~~~~~~~~~~~-----|_|-----~~~~~~~~~~~
2:06 just at the last second of that clip. I like how that man just walks up from the bar and approaches the cashier with absolutely no regard to the line in front of him whatsoever XD
SoundWolf, tip your bartender handsomely, you'll get that level of VIP service.
XD
That’s pretty much on par with what happens nowadays 😂
Very nice and attractive design
Can't wait to try it.
hell no
The people in this video are so attractive.
cronicjointpain: LOL.....
BITCH WTF
If hives of distopian monochromatic figures are your thing.
No profsnity in your comments please
R.I.P Acela Express
Active tilting technology
I just hope my drink finally won’t slip from the table onto the ground when the train turns....
@KYLE HUANG Not much faster, as bankrupt CT tracks are still deteriorating with no investment in sight. Can you say 45 mph top speed for most segments between NYC-Stamford-New Haven? Fastest segment near New Rochelle lets them go an amazing 70 mph. That is it, I don't care what train they have... they need new rail beds and straight tracks which are not happening.
But I’m not sure
As a Japanese tourist, I found my train trip from Boston to NYC quite pleasant. Very spacious and hella historic views. I miss those days before COVID....
Me too, I wanted to ask my parents to visit japan in early 2020 but covid came out of the blue and ruined it all, but now that people are being vaccinated against the virus, we are getteing closer to normal life
こういうのを見るととても行きたくなりますよね..
@@bluepine651 わかりみ…
if you want to travel to see the view, take slower train, want to travel for work etc, take fast train like the ones in Japan, china
Yup and we wont miss the days of orange bloatus, hello amtrack joe
Here is some perspective. The US has a population of 319M and 300 Train Journeys per Day . France has a population of 66M and has 14,000 Train Journeys per Day of which 800 are High Speed.
France is a very small country you shoud compare USA with EU and France with Wisconsin, California ou Montana.
For french people driving through Montana was such an experience as landing on the moon. No comparison is possible 60M vs .9M inhabitants. An we have no (or very rare) bears. ;-)
Yeah lol stop copying.
Gavin Wateski Am I copying a piece of literature or song lyrics? I am just restating some statistical and very public data.
+Philippe Durand If we compare the United States to the EU, the comparison will still be unfavorable for the United States. Comparisons, however, are possible because, although we have large swathes of sparsely populated land, we also have large cities within largely urbanized regions. It's a shame that the United States doesn't have high speed rail but this development is a great start and in the region that would benefit most from it.
Put another way, population density in square kilometers, in France: 114 people/square kilometer, in the U.S: 33 people/square kilometer
The real train was less futuristic tho
When the model gets the coaches correct instead of the real one
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 round of an applause.
This looks amazing, if its anything like this animation, then this up there with the best trains worldwide
It’s nothing like the animation mate, very different. Would have liked this liveyy try in the animation better, it’s fine if it goes faster than the old one. Just don’t really like the horn though 😐
Yes beautiful train French power
I like this Livery more than the one they chose, I generally don’t like pure white liveries as they can look really dirty.
White stuff always makes dirt so easy to see.
Agreedb
Sus
Unless we're talking about Japan, where their white Shinkansen is spotless (on the outside!)
I also like this livery more than what they ended up going with. It's still a good project, but what's even more disappointing is that the locomotives are now flat on the sides, and the coaches are round - unlike in this video. It's a problem both aesthetically and because it increases noise pollution when the train is passing by.
nice
7 years still waiting for them to be put in service
*Shrek rips the page out from the book and slams it shut*
"Like that's ever gon'ta happen! What a load of-" *FLUSH*
Amtraks facts: it’s a energy train
I have a feeling they might replace the Acela.
Something else that will never be built because of political BS.
