Avelia Liberty- Keystone Test

- Today on 5/28/2020 the 2nd Avelia Liberty began testing. The prototype has already been doing extensive testing in Colorado. This set is the first production unit. I didn't even know this test was occurring until the train snuck up on me at Paoli. That was 11:30am. I was able to get to Exton by 11:53am to film extra 2102. The train is beautiful in all aspects. I was expecting the horn to be more powerful but its got a nice sound to it. At 1:44pm I took a high vantage shot of extra 2103 passing Paoli Tower. I hope you enjoy this video!

The fact that the power cars don't line up with the passenger cars bother me for some reason.
Probably because you’re absolutely right. This is a brand new design and there is no reason why coaches and power cars shouldn’t match. It not only looks dumb, it will be a permanent source of drag and noise for the next twenty years.
💯Correct
I think it's because the power cars are of a design which is also designed for Eurkpean models so it has to be a bit narrower to fit within the European loading gauges. Just more of a thing with economics and universal compatibility more than anything, having one flexible design rather than having to design a new power car for every variant they get ordered.
I can't get over the mismatched body taper.
The passenger cars might be designed that way so they line up with the power cars when tilting, but I could be wrong.
Oh look, 21st century rail standards finally arriving to the US.
And American Railfans are triggered AF about the Euro-horn. Just the comic relief I needed in these times.

@@paname514 I just read this just to be sure "the Anno Domini era or Common Era, in accordance with the Gregorian calendar began January 1st, 2001 and will end December 31st, 2100" hence why we are in the 21st century.
@@Salmagundiiihmmm I wouldnt say triggered...if you look back on Amtrak's history its not they first time they've ordered trains from France. The RTG Turbotrains came delivered with French horns. However, most got replaced with P5 horns when they were in service. People really couldn't hear them when blown. Its just a difference in cultures and rail standards between the nations. So there is logic behind why people feel that way in regards to the Avelia liberties horns. But yes there are people that just don't like them not for the reason I explained above. I mean people don't like everything at first. Prime example there are people to this day that still don't like the ACS64's which are based on the Euro Sprinters and Vectron's.

y’all need to stop hating on the horn, Amtrak’s not changing it. It fits great with the train and nobody wants a freight train horn on a modern electric train.
Amtrak probably won't change the horns. I mean you could say the samething about the Acela I and ACS64's they use the K5LA which is also found on freight diesels. Here is an example in regards to the horn sound and loudness. When Amtrak ordered the RTG Tubrotrains from France they had French horns. Most sets got those quickly replaced with P5 horns. The reason is because people couldn't hear them that well when blown. Amtrak also added Mar's lights because the original RTG headlight arrangement confused drivers at grade crossings. The RTG's headlight setup's were similar to a cars. The same concept could be applied to the Avelia as far as the horns go, meaning not being loud enough. But they've had to have passed FRA standards since they are on the sets. Let's see what happens because lots of things need testing and, those evaluations will determine if changes will occur on the next sets.
Thanos this is USA, not Europe
Railfaner 232 so? Amtrak could have changed the horn, but they didn’t. There not gonna change it all right after delivery unless there’s an actual problem with it, and a super loud horn would feel weird
Thanos a super loud horn feeling weird?? What about railroad crossings, this tiny horn nobody will hear while driving, and how drivers in the USA they will just continue in the tracks. And they will not be used to that type of horn. And also the train is from France. That’s why they have this garbage horn. And since it’s not in service till next year that means there is still a chance of it changing the horn to a K5LA or a P3
The Avelia can reach 165 miles per hour 262 kilometers per hour it's between Princeton Junction and New Brunswick however it has to run that section at 135 mph 220 km/h otherwise the passing commuter trains would have the windows blown out
Maybe they should truncate commuter trains at New Brunswick and have avelia trains make all stops to Trenton then resume express service
So nice to see new rolling stock on the NEC, especially when made by a company as experienced as Alstom. Let's hope they will improve that horn. Can't wait to see videos of them thundering past your camera.

Does anyone know why the train has two engines like a TGV and not two steerer carriages like your typical modern EMU (ICE3, Hitachi Javelin etc.)?
I don't think Amtrak wanted highspeed emu's. Those would have to be built to withstand a crash for U.S. standards. I think they could be built but might have been more expensive and heavier. The Avelia is lighter then the current Acela trains. They also have a modular design meaning parts can be quickly changed or the consist expanded depending on ridership demand. The same thing could be done with the EMU also but Amtrak chose this route.

That's part of the four-track "Main Line" reduced to three. The spacing is 13'4". (ample) There is also an adjacent parallel two-track line - now reduced to overgrown embankment and 20th Century bridge structures - run to seed. There must have been a change in plan at some point.
I hope the final version of the Avelia Liberty trains have a more standard American train horn. With this kind of horn it is very difficult to tell what is approaching, a car / light truck, or train. This could be dangerous at crossings...
Daniel Sutton yeah, we need a K5LA!
Will the Keystone 🔑💎 Corridor 🐝 running HSR 🚄 like the Northeast Corridor anytime soon?
I don't think so..its a super curvey line so you can't got that fast. I mean with the tilt tech that train has it would reduce the travel time from Philly to Harrisburg.
EMDSD14R I understand. But it's electrified ⚡️ isn't it? Hence why they tested that electric ⚡️ train 🚅 ? Maybe they could run higher-speed trains 🚄 but they could 🐝 go slower if usage of that line should increase?!

@@EMDSD14R - That is why I was worried at the 165 mph test speed; Alstom itself has stated - rather plainly - that there is more there. 165 mph is not it? @@THEFINALHAZARD The Keystone is basically a clone of the NEC; like the NEC, it is fully electrified (from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh) - also, except for railfans, it's not as if it has a ton of eyeballs (from regulators - or even the FRA (Federal Railroad Administration)); what they are doing is a technical violation (running an uncertified trainset on its own power). AMTRAK couldn't do this on the NEC - too many eyeballs. On the Keystone, however (basically an NEC clone), they can get away with it. It was likely why Penn Central built the Keystone line the way they did.
I just wanted to make a few corrections to your comment. The keysyone line was never electrified to Pittsburg. That plan never came to be when WWII happen. If the PRR was able to there would be no need to switch to diesel power at 30th street. Also the Avelia has to be qualified and tested before Amtrak fully accept the train since Its still testing its technically still owned by Alstom . So before it can do any NEC testing it needs to complete these tests and more people must qualified to run it.
@@EMDSD14R - It's why I pointed to the technical violation of running it even on the Keystone line; it has not been certified to run on its own power. (That is what the testing at TTCI is for.) Keystone, however, (from Harrisburg to Philadelphia) is an NEC clone (which is why the Penn Central designed it that way); it is pre-NEC, in fact. They also need to get the shops at Bear, DE and Ivy City up to snuff (they will be doing maintenance on it ; they do on Current Acela); is there a shop NORTH of Bear that does the same? If so, they WILL at some point do MORE testing on the NEC - and north of 30th Street Station - for the same reason it stopped at Bear and Ivy City; otherwise, it will basically be track-compatibility testing north of 30th Street Station - which they had to do with Current Acela, but only toward the end of the Certification Track.
When will they test it on the nec

Why there is a mismatch between power car and passenger coaches?
Yeah I think that was done for crash protection reasons. Like in case the cars rolled over. But I am not sure. You'd think the engines bodylines would match the cars.
From what I read, it is because only the cars tilt into turns while the power car doesn´t. Works the same as TGV now, which imo is trash tilting. If they wanted to squeeze more speed out of the turns, they would make the power cars tilt too. What they did here is pretty much only for comfort with no speed benefit.
@@slovak_eagle the same or similar tilt system was used on the X2000. The locomotive doesn't tilt with the cars but still has the trucks that allow it to go around the curves faster. And I am pretty sure the current Acela power cars don't tilt either.
@@EMDSD14R It's because the powercars are design originally for the Avelia Horizon, which will have matching powercars and cars. Since it's a "cheap TGV" they didn't bother re-design them
I wish they would have made a tilting mechanism for the power cars too. Not having a tilt mechanism in the front basically means the train will not go any faster than other trains around curves. It also means that the lack of the bulge on the power cars make them not line up properly with the cars. It looks really odd that way. The paint on the train, and the horn are growing on me, anyways nice video!
The X2000 power car didn't tilt and the current Acela power cars don't tilt. But they have the trucks that allows them to take curves faster. The reasons the cars tilt is to counteract the forces exerted on the passengers and keep them up right and comfortable. Since the power cars are locomotives there's no need for them to tilt. Now if this set was a full emu then the whole train must tilt because all sections of the train carry passengers.
Ah, I see. Thanks for informing me!

The only thing I heard was it'll be heading to D.C. late Sunday night early Monday morning. That's all I know. I am still keeping an eye out for any new info related to it. If I find out something I'll let you know.
Ok, thanks! Appreciate it!!
@@NERJ607 Anytien buddy! Update as of right now I don't think its testing today. I haven't seen or heard anything about it.
@@EMDSD14R I just thought about how good the Aveila would look next to an ACS-64. *THE FUTURE* xD
I think it has almost the same paint scheme from the head-on perspective..
@@NERJ607 that would be a sick picture. Hmm I see what you mean
I love train!!!!!
All hail Acela Liberty
Virtual railfan confirmed
Honestly Idk what's wrong with people not getting used to this new color scheme when the current (soon to depart) color scheme of the Acela Express is SO BLAND!!!
Am I the only one that noticed that the locomotives and the cars don't exactly match up on the sides?
Nope your not the only one.
I think it’s a functional design related to the tumbling effect these cars can do to relieve g forces through high speed corners for passenger comfort
@@916_Nix yeah I was thinking that sane thing.
i want to see the Acela at full speed!
Same here!🚅🚅
@@EMDSD14R - That is why I referred to the 165 mph test run from TTCI that Amtrak released; only to find out from an Alstom presser that there's more speed there. 165 mph (incidentally, that exceeds the top of the CURRENT Acela at TTCI) and there is more to be had? Uh fricken oh. What in Ned is Alstom chasing? The top speed record for ALL Pendolino trainsets - regardless of location? Someone chase down what that is currently. It could well be "uh fricken oh" indeed.
What train
put a K5LA ON IT!! that horn is just ewwwwww
Ikr its so ugly
will they be running on NEC?
Its made at least two trips to D.C. after this video was made. More testing is planned though and it once more people are trained on it and its accepted by Amtrak the speed tests should start.🙏🙏
EMDSD14R Ok great!
Do you know when it will test up the corridor?
As far as testing I dont know when that will start on the NEC.I didn't even know it was testing today until I look out on my porch and it was passing my house. That's how I knew.
EMDSD14R How much you wanna bet it’ll come down here tomorrow? There’s still minimal train traffic and it’s a weekday
Sunday night into Monday morning it’s scheduled to travel to Washington from Philadelphia
Seth Simmons Thanks. Do you know when it’s going to go from Philly to DC?
@@sethsimmons5845 I heard that also. It might be towed there from what I read.
So, this is the latest railfanning sensation of the USA! Looks futuristic! BTW, why not 250/300 kmph?
Greetings from India :-)
Yep it sure is!😁 well since it was the very first test it technically wasn't accepted by Amtrak. Not only that but the crew has to get familiar with the train. During this test they were looking at various parts of the train to see what it did. Well its designed to do 220mph but inservice it'll do 160mph. But not on this line though.
Oh yeah and seeing it up close is amazing!
Greetings from the USA!🎇🎆
@@EMDSD14R Thanks!
Will you cover the high speed trials?
hi Eddie. how have you been?
I've been good buddy hbu?
Please tell me that horn is a test
Sadly no. That's the horn it came with from the factory.
@@EMDSD14R Please tell me they can equip another one
@@DV_Graph1cs I mean they could but I don't think they will. Lets see what happens when they enter service.
If this is the new Acela on the NEC, the old ones should put onto the Keystone Corridor
I think they are just being retired or sold to commuter railroads.
No there introducing 4tier service with the old ones
@@AnthonyBrusca they arent
@@davidb.5781 4th tier? So the Super express Boston-NY-Dc, normal Acela, NE regional? What's the 4th?
Anthony Brusca p.
Looks very good! It's a pity that it goes so slowly, I would like to see it at full speed.
Oh yeah its amazing! Well I am glad they weren't speed testing because I wouldn't have beat the train to the next station. They'll do speed tests on the NEC hopefully soon.
EMDSD14R it’s max speed on the northeast corridor is 160 mph but only on a few miles of track :(
@@matthewhanna9115 yeah sadly that's how fast it'll go.
EMDSD14R however, there’s a new high speed rail route in development that will allow these trains to run at 220 mph but it won’t be complete until 2040 :/
@@matthewhanna9115 oh really? So a dedicated line? That would be cool! so are they designing it or building it? I'll be 50 years old by then if its built😂
why this train isn't picking up speed ???? or this is not high speed train ???
Since its not fully accepted by Amtrak it has to complete qualification and certain tests had to be done. They weren't testing for speed. They were testing various parts of the train and familiarizing the crew with it. Not everyone can run this train yet so they can't just speed test.
@@EMDSD14R OHH OK 👍
