- What can we expect from the COP28 climate summit, starting 30 November in Dubai?
Governance This Week asked Professor Jos Delbeke for his take, just before he left for the summit.
Delbeke is the EIB Climate Chair at the European University Institute and he leads the STG climate team. He previously was Director-General of DG CLIMA at the European Commission and has shaped EU climate policy for decades.
In this interview he covers the Global Stocktake (a five-year assessment of climate action prescribed by the Paris Agreement), loss and damage, renewable energy and carbon pricing.

You guys either recorded this interview before the Channel 4 sting on the UAE cop28 heads or you haven’t been paying attention. They’re specifically using their position to sign more oil deals and in fact they’re planning to increase use of petroleum by promoting supersonic air travel and selling cheap petrol cars in global south to compete with electric.

Seems the host of this conference, UAE, has not only put a high exec from their oil company (albeit he's head of renewables) as chair but it seems to have leaked that UAE also intends to use the COP28 for sales of UAE oil and natural gas...

STG, please include hydrogen pricing as well as carbon pricing. They will be intertwined for years to come.
