  • In 1996, a Chrysler historical series was put together for the Chrysler Employee Network, with a review of the company's history through the 1980s. The Chrysler Chronicles has not been updated since but it's still a valuable look-back at our wealth of automotive heritage and innovation.

Lee Iacoccas come around once every blue moon. I'm currently reading his bio. The car industry needs a massive overhaul.

The K platform was a great success. I don’t expect Fiat to be able to duplicate this. I almost bought a new Challenger. Decided to keep my 68 Fury.

I hate to say this, but the mid-1990s was the last time the American car companies' futures looked as good as their past. The guy in the video said to savor these days - because they won't be seen again.

Chrysler had success going for them in the 2000s but the CEO had to agree to merge with Daimler AG 😑 that ruined everything

Chrysler needs another K car - an inexpensive, reasonably reliable car that will sell well.
I like how AMC wasn't mentioned at all - when AMC was purchased, it really was a reverse takeover. The Eagle Premier was the basis for the LH cars.

It's the Jeep Jinx...Jeep became the volume brand for FCA as it had been for AMC, Kaiser and Willys before it.

I worked for AMC/jeep/Renault in a dealership as a parts manager from 1987 until the early 2000s. I was there for the Chrysler take over. I ended up with a Dodge dealer.
The eagle premier was the worst car ever produced. This appears to be a Chrysler promotional film from the 90s. I can understand them not wanting to mention the Premier. It really was a brutal vehicle.
However, the takeover and creation of diamond star motors and merger with Mitsubishi was significant and should be mentioned

Wayne Deadder it was a pretty horrible vehicle in terms of build quality. The vehicle dynamics were a lot better than any K variant. Castaing was recruited from AMC to lead engineering at Chrysler. He was a Renault guy.
DSM is significant, I’d agree. The Colt was a more suitable subcompact than the Sundance/Shadow, which sold on price.

Chrysler purchased AMC and then gave AMC control of their engineering and technology and everything else pretty much.

The dreaded minivan is something you don't want to drive but yet if you have 2 or 3 kids to tow all the time is so amazingly practical that you had to buy one. That was actually a Hal Sperlich idea, Iacoccas right hand man and designer at Ford and Chyrsler. Henry Ford II hated both Iacocca and Sperling so few of their innovative ideas ever got off the ground in the 70s at ford

    • @nlpnt

The guy who called it a "lifestyle vehicle" was sadly wrong, it's a life*stage* vehicle. People either lease or they buy one minivan whose back window will go from a "Baby on Board" sign to "GO SENIORS!!!" soaped on it.

I have not owned a mini van in 7 years but I started doing projects during the pandemic and remembered how easy it is to pick up supplies like 4x8 sheets of drywall. I traded in my suv for a minivan and I am very pleased. BTW the Dodge Charger Hemi is also in the garage. My garage is like a mullet Business and Party.

My grandfather bought a 83 Plymouth Reliant and it was way better (in every way) than the 83 Chevette that was really popular at the time. Roomier, more powerful and very innovative

"Chrysler 80's'--spends 1/3 of the time in the 90's and doesn't mention: AMC, Dakota, Using K cars to make Luxo sedans, Daytonas and Limos. Shadow,Lancer/H cars, Convertables of many models, C body Imperial[or the J] Using 70s cars for the whole 80s[Omni,5th Ave], TURBO everything, Diamond Star cars., airbags, or massive profits.

For certain - Chrysler should've continued development of the M body, instead of the crap R body St Regis/Fury/Newport/New Yorker, and equally dismal AC body Dynasty/New Yorker.
Engineers did have a TBI system for the M body ready to install for the '86 model year, but bean counters forced the company to continue buying woefully outdated carburetors. Oddly, the TBI system was used in the '88 model light pickups.
GM had TBI in their 4.3 and 5.0 engines by then, and Ford actually had an SMPI 5.0 in their Panther body in 1983.
This intentional starvation of capital eventually made it impossible for Chrysler to compete, and combined with Iaccoca's hatred for the UAW at Kenosha, they reneged on their promise to build the M body through 1992, and killed the cars off in mid ' '89.
Intentional capital starvation was the name of the game in the DC years, and sadly continues today at FCA.
