Love your channel, I started racing this year just cause I was inspired by you. I’m not the best driver and the car is slow but I’m having fun and learning. Thanks for being awesome
New to your channel, but I really enjoy the videos. Getting back into racing over the last year and a half. Bought a LS car, but my heart is with a good ole SBC like I built myself multiple times back in the day. I may just have to list my 2012 Camaro and go old school!
Well then just build up a old school engine for the newer camaro. I went old school long long time ago in my original 86 5.0 LX Mustang, first engine i did was a 69 351 Windsor, then a 72 351 Cleveland, then current engine done about 10 Years Ago a Single 1000cfm 4150 Holley, 521 Stroked BBF, went Low to Mid Nines on 275/60 Drag Radials, N/A. Out of the box Trickflow Heads, Mild Solid Roller, and a really nice C-4, built 8.8 with 3.90,s I just gotta thing for Carburetors. Next Set-up gonna be a Large Single Garrett, 102-106 probably this same engine, with a few changes, But would love to build up a Big 598 BBF for the Single Turbo, but i don't have that much Money to play with. And i Won't put an LS under my hood, i just can't do it. Gonna have to go with a Powerglide also, I'm having a hard time just doing that. So build what you got if you like it.
Your videos are a testimonial to how obsolete low tech hardware can survive and win, when set up, tuned, and driven properly, with high tech software. This long block set up is just an air pump and could just about be discarded and replaced if you win one 10K event. No ego here, just common sense based on real experience and enjoying your hobby. Best part about it is that this hobby can actually make you money, and is probably much more enjoyable if you dont spend too much on unnecessary hardware. Keep rolling and stay safe...
Always thought you had their 13 degree heads. Its amazing what your doing with the 23 degree out of the box heads. I may have a chance this year with my track one vintage 1990 model castings. Boost will wake up anything. Sould get my FI nt 98 gen 3 next week. Wanted to go to better heads but maybe this fall. After seen this video I dont feel as bad about having to run my track 1s one more season though
Good luck with the build. I have had good luck with a lot of different styles of heads that should not have gone that fast. Boost makes everything happier, lol That N/T 98 is a bad piece!
@@TurboJohnRacing yea, had made some cuts in other places but the turbo is not one of them. Dropping my block off to TKM friday to get a callies magnum crank, grp rods, custom pistons fitted and some machine work done. Hope to get a chance to run with you @ the 252 events this year!
Yes, if a head is designed to run water through it, you run water through it. Otherwise, run a solid head. A true dry deck would involve plugging up the head and block, or whichever you run water through, which is always a good idea to do. Don't just use the head gasket. Once you hit that magic boost number and start lifting the head, you will see why...
I noticed you're not indexing your spark plugs in the head. Might help with more consistent burn if you did. It's a old racers trick. I saw 1 plug that had its ground electrode covering the center electrode from the cylinder. Indexing the plug, puts the electrode strap at the valve side of the combustion chamber and opens the center electrode to the cylinder for easier and more consistent ignition of the fuel. The way you index the plugs is you mark the plug where the ground electrode is welded to the plug. And then once you install it, make sure the mark is facing up. Or in the upper 90° of the plug.
hey John, resurrecting your old comments. Seeing as you're a smart guy when it comes to putting a budget combo together and choosing parts that work, I'm hoping you could help me out. I'm putting together a SN95 for no prep and I want to ship it to the US for Rocky Mountain Race week next year (My bucket list thing). If you had $13,000 to put an alcohol motor together what would you use? Firstly should I go SB or BB? I'm kind of set on a blow through 4150 4 barrel throttle body with a Procharger so your thoughts on the long block for that would be awesome!
Just curious, do you "anneal" your copper head gaskets before reinstalling? DAMN! 40lbs....that must be one fun wicked ass ride!!!! I've had great results with the Pro Filer as well! Great head! Great engine man!
Some people dont realize how good those heads are they kinda over look them thats what is going on my 377 along with aluminum rods and probably a turbo but might go nos

It's cool to watch $50,000 engine builds but I'd rather watch someone build a motor that is more like something we can all do at home in our garage. I'd rather build a 400hp engine with my own hands than buy a 1000hp that someone else built.

I’m building a similar set up only it will be mostly street driven so I’m doing lower compression and twin 80/88 turbos . Excuse if you’ve mentioned the cam specifics before but I’m having a hard time finding the right cam around 700 lift .
Watching this really makes me want to not put my 408 back in my circle track car but just go buy a turbo and see how much I can push a steel h beam motor. What fuel injection do you use?

Because, when you get right down to the nuts and bolts the sbc is much better for the money. LS motors are for guy with no motor building skills. Yeas you can pull one out of a wrecking yard and with some ring gapping and a cam you can make decent power FOR AWHILE. then its back to the wrecking yard again. Makes little or no difference ,in horsepower. This theory has been proven in the dyno cell. To make inconsequential gains in torque or horsepower.

At 40 psi it doesn't matter but, I would have to port match them heads? Just me🤔🤔
Thinking the same thing it bothers me to see a ledge like that hindering flow. Causes turbulence
I was more amazed of the out of the box stock ports than anything else.
Did you made any modification to the head besights the pushrod holes? With 5/16 pushrods it would work as it should be or any clearence issue?
Minor port matching would help a bunch i bet.
