I love the contrast between how "socially restrictive" Japanese society seems, and how it's okay for one guy to just randomly shout traditional greetings at the Emperor in the middle of a crowded auditorium.
Samurai Spirit!
It’s not really a greeting, it means “Long live the Emperor”
He probably didn't make out very well from this experience.
Yeah.. but it's "long live!" It's short for the phrase "Heika Tennou Banzai!" Or in direct translation: "Currently-Reigning Heaven-King Long-live!" It's like saying "God Bless America" or "God Save the King" it's a national blessing thing. So... It's probably okay. Plus, His Majesty's reaction probably made it so that anyone upset didn't do anything about it. Since He bowed at the person saying it.
it's like someone randomly shouting: "Long Live the King" when King Charles walks out... so socially awkward!! /s
In case you don't know, Banzai doesn't mean "Charge" but it means "Ten Thousand Years" or "Long live". When the soldiers charged they shouted "Tenno Heika Banzai" which means "Long live the Emperor"

This is important because the emperor almost never bows, one important exception being when saluting war heroes. Before WW2 the emperor used to visit the Yasukuni shrine to pay respects to war heroes and Japanese soldiers were well aware of this. They knew that if they died in combat the emperor himself will come to pay respects. 'See you at Yasukuni' was a commonly used phrase to say goodbye among soldiers. However the emperor (since Hirohito) has stopped visiting the shrine allegedly because WW2 war criminals from Tokyo Trial were 'secretly' included in the shrine's 'book of souls'. Now they have a separate ceremony (that you see in the video) outside the shrine.
Because they were war criminals. Japan's crimes in Manchuria will never he forgotten.

Seeing all these jokes made about the ww2, it's extremely interesting that everyone seems to be more focused on how the word sounds than its meaning.
The same with symbols. People on the internet seems to think that the world unanimously agrees that the nazi symbol represents the atrocities they committed when in reality, Hitler used it for the sole reason that it looks cool. They don't care if it has a different meaning in other cultures. Everyone just doesn't want see it. They don't want others to use it either. The meaning and origin be damned. And then they act like the people who has no knowledge of the Nazis are the uneducated ones, lol. Not everyone is fed with useless information that has nothing to do with their lives at an early age. Making yourselves the center of everything and not respecting other cultures is ironically what uneducated people would act.

It actually means "Ten Thousand Years of Happiness" although technically it translates as "Ten Thousand Years" and is derived from the same phrase that was saluted to the Emperor of China starting in about the Tang Dynasty around the year 619. It is exclusively used for the Emperor and was used by China, Korea, Vietnam, and Japan. Since only Japan has the only surviving Imperial Family and Emperor of the four nations, it is used sparingly for the Emperor of Japan in modern day.

Tom K Why?
Cultural savagery.
matt sinco If reverting back to an absolute monarchy as opposed to an American democracy is their cultural roots, then that backwards culture can be forgotten.
Germany: We sorry about what our ancestors did to you 😭
Japan: BANZAI!
While the Emperor no longer has any political power at all, and church and state are separated, he is the living symbol of the nation and the people.
His dynasty has been reigning since time immemorial.
Banzai is still a used chant in Japan. Used to wish good luck upon someone
Akin Khoo
Well they raped 20,000 and killed 300,000 in Nanjing, why wouldn't they steal their culture too?
and Then the War has Ended, Nobody take Banzai as the Glorious Praise term That Much anyways.
In the Meantime they're free to use it as a Cheer words, i guess?
It means long live (the king) you weeb, literrally means "thousands of years"
that's only what they think but we all know america damaged the whole world with those nuclear bombs
Schützengrabenvernichtungspanzerkraftwagen you mean those nuclear weapons which prevented a full scale invasion of the Japanese Homeland, which would have most likely ended in houndreds of thousands of more lives lost
? Not to mention, the Soviet Union was already preparing their own offensive against Japan after the surrender of the German forces in the west. Would you have preferred a country split between Russia and the U.S.? Or possibly occupied by Russia alone? Would history have been more favorable too you with the increased Lose of life, and potential communist dictatorship that could have taken place just like in North Korea?
Banzai from Germany
Slava SSSR from Russia

Looks like they encourage him first when he's about to walk down that bridge. After that they celebrate it like he'd finished a huge challenge

my grandfather (an Australian) served with the British and Australian army in WW2. He fought in Africa Europe and the pacific and got a military cross for raiding a Japanese fort. The Australians (like the yanks) were very brave men.

Popularization of using moon as a Religious symbol only start after The Ottoman era, which likes centuries after the Prophet's Deaths, We use Tauhidallah in our flag, but you guys can't read arabic , thats why the use of moon started.
Elderly american man: Sweating profusely
Probably not, the banzai charge was something that almost always ended up with a very large pile of japanese corpses infront of the trenches. Charging while screaming wildly isnt something that has made much military sense in about 300 years.
@@jimboblordofeskimos Still left people permanently scarred. Imagine reading a book in your trench and suddenly hearing hundreds of men running at you with bayonets and swords fixed. It'd definitely make a few people shit themselves that's for sure.
@@120mmsmoothbore2 that is very true, however if I get the choice between being the guy looking down at the corpse thinking 'well that was bloody terrifying' and being the corpse, id say the guy who wakes up sweating 20 years later is the winner.
@@jimboblordofeskimos I don't think that's something you can answer indefinitely until it happens, fortunately.
@@jimboblordofeskimos But it had a large impact on the soldier's morale, even though it doesn't makr much sense, it was stressful and demoralizing
