The only reason I watched this was to see how you would make the Knight. The way you made the Knight is the best one I've seen so far. It was simple (no carving), elegant (it matched the other pieces very well) and easily recognizable as a Knight. Some other turned Knights I've seen on RUclips were hardly recognizable as Knights. WELL DONE!
Fantastic, thank you. The designs are wonderful, so simple and appealing (as a keen chess player who wood turns, this was a delight to find). The execution is amazing I can imagine doing them all the same is extremely challenging. The designs also emphasize the grain of the wood beautifully.
I feel like a chess set is to a woodturner what a peacock is to a stained glass artist. Ya gotta do one....ok, well, I actually have peafowl, and they are as beautiful as you would expect, so I'm sure I'll do numerous peafowl projects, but I'm special like that. I like these. They're minimalist in an Art Deco kind of way.
Beautiful set! I dont know if you have maybe done this already....but i was thinking a set out of marbled resin or with wooden bottoms and a resin top would look really nice too! So talented!!
What an interesting but great way to make an amazing chess set. Just made a board and would love to make a set. Regards James One Handed Maker - Australia
I started to turn a chess set awhile ago, but never finished it all the pieces. I made the knights by drawing the side, front and back profiles on a block of wood, then sawed it out twice with a scroll saw, taping the pieces back together after the first cut and rotating the piece 90 degrees before the second cut. I turned the base and glued the horse head on top. I cut the slits for the rook and the bishop's hat with a coping saw.
Indeed, it is new design and great look. However, why did not you weighted it with metal block inside? Additionally, the king need some little extra distinguish between the queen, by more extra length. Again, it is great set.
Now you're talking-to! Love chess. It's a very nice looking set. All you need now are the felt bottoms and your set is complete. How long did it take to make all 32 pieces?
Great set, Andy. For the first time though, I have a slight disappointment in part of your work. The queen just looks so similar to the bishop. But I really like the knight. Love how you did that. Still get a like from me.
Excellent video Andy and so helpful. I've just been asked to make a chess set for a dear friend and felt it was beyond my skills at the moment. Your contemporary style is lovely and I will now give it a go. Thanks for the inspiration. What woods did you use?
The King is 60mm then I took 5mm off for the queen then another 5 for the bishop and the pawn is 40mm I think the knight and castle are pretty much 45mm I didn't have a plan for this I just kind of turned what looked in proportion .. hope this helps cheers Andy
Really nice nice chess set, Andy. I had intended to make a set when I first started turning, but the spring pole lathe and chipped flint tools made it just too difficult... :-) Clyde
Good Morning Mr. Phillip! I'm a High-schooler and beginner wood turner, making my first chess set through my 4-H club. I really like your design and was wondering if you would mind sharing up-close photos of the pieces. Your design is simple but beautiful and for my first project I thought it would be manageable. I do not intend to entirely copy your work, but I would like to keep the basic shape and size. Thank you for the video!
Sorry I don't have the set anymore ..Its not really my design so copy all you want .. A friend I made it for gave me some pictures to base it on but your right its a cool basic design ..
Nice set. Just as a heads up, the Queens are always on the D squares (d1/d8) and the Kings are always on the E squares (e1/e8). You had them in a checker pattern for some reason.
Amazing! I can't say it any other way but amazing! As with others, I was curious how you would make the Knight but as soon as you did it, I knew what it was. How long did this take you to finish? 💜
Hi Sean. . I've made one simular to this before so I did this one by eye but the first one I did I cut out some cardboard templates like you mention especially for the prawns as there's so many and they're next each other ... thanks 👍
Hi, thanks for this video! I'm also trying out my luck on a lathe. What tools are you using to make the pawns? Specifically to cut into and through the wood in a straight line like you did and then round them out? I want to find the same, but have no idea what they're called. Thank you!
The chisel that does the straight cuts is a parting tool .. I also used a roughing gouge to turn it to round and a skew chisel and a spindle gouge for the details ..cheers
Really cool! How would it look if you put the king/queen positions at the highest point and went down from there side to side and down to the lowly pawns.
Thanks Tom. . I thought that would look cool but the pawns only go half way down .I suppose you could still play though the grand masters might not like it lol.. 👍
Hi Chrisso ..I have an etsy shop there is a link on my channel .. Glad you like the videos .. a couple of good channels to watch if you are thinking of taking up wood turning are - Mike Waldt and Martin saben Smith they have channels focused more on teaching ..cheers andy
Andy Phillip Thanks for reply, there are myself and a few friends and your post are helping us set up as they have a lot of self help tips, Thanks again!. Aussie Chrisso .😆😎
Spanne R I was just being facetious. I am as awed by the work as anyone else. But the pieces are in formation, so it shouldn’t take a huge stretch of the imagination to imagine the squares. The queen goes on her own colour. She should be opposite the other queen.
@@AndyPhillipWoodturning I will! I made a pawn and a knight once, but getting them to match will be the problem. I like the simplification of the figures in this set.

the rook design is definitely my favourite, that dome is very unique and attractive. love this and the amazing board!
Gorgeous! I love the clean lines. So beautiful.

Thanks so much .. Did you see the board I made to go with them ??
I came to comment there must be a board to go with, gonna go look now. :) Great video, sir!
You make it look so easy . I've just bought a lathe, and haven't used it yet as am waiting for chisel's.
So when you get check mate you just make another king pin to continue?
There's nothing so gorgeous as a beautiful chess set...you make it look so easy and your work is always stunning...tyfs :-)
Thanks so much 👍

Interesting take on the rooks and the knights. I like them, simple beauty.
Glad you like it Thomas .. 👍

A neat and pleasant set that looks good but won't distract attention from the subtleties of the game.
What an interesting but great way to make an amazing chess set.

Hi Pamela .. that's great it's a nice set to turn nothing to fiddly I used walnut and oak . . You will have to make the 3d chess bd next 👍
What dimensions did you use Andy? Height of pawn and king?

Ha ha .. pull that branch a bit tighter find a sharp rock and go for !!! Cheers Clyde 👍
Bravo on the knight...I must admit, I too dropped by to see and was impressed. What brand/model lathe do you use?
Thanks..In this video I was using an Axminster avls lathe...cheers

Thanks.. I used a spray lacquer on these

Nice design!
Thanks!
Do you sell that set of pieces? Really Nice work, congratulations!
Did you design the pieces? They seem to be a stripped down minimalistic Staunton pattern.
very good Andy I like too try too make some.
Thanks Jeffrey .. 👍
Очень круто! И с большим уважением к времени зретелей. Двойной респект!
Thanks
офигенный дизайн ,,,, просто ничего лишнего ,,,, лучше проще не сделаешь
Satisfied!!💐
Just a thought, but could you make the White Chessmen from oak and the Black Chessmen from walnut?
You need to read the description ..lol
105 people play checkers. Great video!
Do you sell that set of pieces? Really Nice work!! Congratulations!
Thanks .. I hadn't thought about selling them but I suppose I could send me a message on my etsy if you want 👍
Simple but effective subscribed
Just because I'm curious, what were you spraying the pieces with?
Clear lacquer
Trying to make this currently. Most annoying part is getting pieces to be the same
Awesome! Now you need to make the board.....
Thanks Margery .. I'm just on with sourcing the wood for the board hopefully will be something a bit different ..thanks for watching 👍
Andy, Looking forward to seeing your artistic version of a chess board. I'm sure it will be spectacular! Keep up the great work!
check out woodworking for mere mortals. he's got a great board there.
Looks great! How long would you say it took you to turn all of these?
Thanks Phillip ... I did these over a few days but I think you'd be looking at 10-15 min per piece ..
Just.... Excellent
Beautiful!
Thanks Nik 👍

This chess set is worth 30 or 40 times more than the one's you buy at the store out of plastic for $25 bucks..... 👍..👏..👌..✌
請問,這個風格的國際象棋有名字嗎?市場上可以買到嗎?
Very excellent.
Thanks Tony .. I wouldn't say I designed it I wanted to make them minimalistic and got ideas from pictures of other chess pieces. .cheers 👍

Buen trabajo, pero hazle una base a cada pieza. Son demasiado minimalistas.

En mi opinión, tal y como están, son muy coherentes.
Very nice!

Not to take away from your beautiful finished pieces and tireless work, but the white queen is on the wrong square/:
Sorry to knit pick your knit picking, but what square?

I could not learn much from this video because it was in high speed. Maybe slow it down, please.
This is one of the most unpleasant things about manual wood turning. Making several pieces the same exact shape ...
LOL ..tell me about it ...
Exquisite:
Thanks Thomas ..👍
super +1
