    Great info! Didn’t know that cardboard boxes aren’t good for long term storage!

    You stated that the plastic ammo cans will leak when submerged, and you are correct. A great clue that they're not airtight like the metal cans with much more substantial gaskets.
    Therefore, airborne moisture is constantly entering the plastic cans.
    Oxygen absorbers like the ones used in food preservation have a very short lifespan. Once oxygen absorbers of that size have quickly used up their resources, they're done and no longer effective (once they've become hard). Nor can they be refreshed.
    Desiccant packs are what you want to use, which absorb moisture and can be repeatedly refreshed in the oven as needed (usually every several years in airtight ammo cans).
    If one wants their ammo to be sound for their lifetime and longer, then pay the couple of extra bucks for steel ammo cans (surplus or aftermarket) in good shape with good gaskets. Add desiccant packs to absorb the moisture.

    I prefer the metal cans and I put plenty of the little packs in and around plus I have a water absorbers in my safe and under my bed
