The new machines only accept the new $1 coin because the old $1 coin and the new $1 coin have slightly different shapes. If I didn't remember wrongly, the new $1 coin is slightly bigger. The inside of the machine must have been designed to be able to only accept the new $1 coin. But regardless, the new $1 coin is the main type that is in circulation today - I rarely get the old $1 coin now. :)
