    Ahhhh ovulation. The best time of year. I wish I didn’t get stressed EVERY year but I can’t help it. 🙃
    I have a ten year old gecko who isn’t bred and she is still ovulating. Looks like I get to look forward to a few more years of it 😅 Female geckos who are bred for multiple seasons live on average half of the expected lifespan from what I’ve heard from breeders, which is why many choose to only breed a female for a couple seasons or even better they get one year on one year off.
    Thanks for the plug :)

      Please help Leopard Gecko and Jessica 🙏 i got my first leopard geckos in April, a girl and a boy (kept separately) when they were a couple of months old. Around the 6 month age mark my female went off her food..she would only eat every now and again or only eat waxworms...she has slowly reduced this to more recently not wanting to eat at all! This is really starting to worry me because I have looked at everything and I cant think why she won't eat. Could this be ovulation?? And so early on in her life? If not then I really don't know what to do... we have changed her environment to a more naturalistic one with arcadia arid earth mix to see if it was her being bored but she's still the same. She's losing weight and its worrying me with what to do as we are coming up to winter and if she wants to naturally brumate I will worry more about her surviving it :/ please help! I can send a picture of her current set up and past set up if that helps? The boy is still eating and is totally fine and we have another female who is about 1 1/2 years old and she's still eating too...

    • @fionashepley478

      Please separate them ASAP! Chances are they’ve bred, which shortens the lifespan of the female and potentially causes eggbinding, which can require expensive surgery or even kill her. Leopard geckos are solitary animals and don’t benefit at all. It’s very stressful to keep them together. I’ve seen countless cases of geckos seeming fine for years, then snapping and seriously injuring or killing each other. Not worth the risks at all. I strongly recommend reading this, an article written by a person who housed two females together for a few years before they fought: aminoapps.com/c/reptiles/page/item/cohabiting-leopard-geckos/D8Qg_QpxUNIM8BDlKwQwYGZQzgrJ3Q1WWV8

    Ah yes. The fun of ovulation. I can sympathise with my Leo, although she’s about five (a rescue so I’m not 100% sure) and she’s never laid an egg in her life, and I’ve never noticed any ovulation ‘spots’ on her belly. There is no chance of her being male though. That has been confirmed.

    My bfs female gecko gave him a huge scare over the summer because she was ovulating, but because she's 11, it was difficult for her to reabsorb the eggs. He had to take her to the vet and keep her really hydrated, I believe she even refused to eat for about two weeks and kept to herself for a while. Happy to report, however, that Genevieve is doing great now.

      Fiona Shepley no no, i know that much. i’ve only got three 10 gallon tanks, so two are housed together. i know i’m supposed to have a 20 gallon for more than one, but they’ve been there their whole life so i’m not too worried. they’ll be in a 20 gallon as soon as i give the other two away

    • @fionashepley478
      @fionashepley478 5 лет назад

      ariana sulia 20 gallons is the minimum for a single adult gecko and they should never be housed together, regardless of gender. They’re solitary animals and it’s quite stressful for them. They will fight, even if it takes years. And considering the tiny tanks I’m sure it’ll be sooner rather than later. They must be separated ASAP.

    • @arisully28

    My girl is roughly 7-9 years old and she's never laid eggs but every year she'll dramatically lose weight it wasn't until you mentioned that I realized what was happening. She ovulates in the spring and hibernates in the winter and twice a year I go into a panic because she just becomes unbearably skinny. My male who is in the exact same care is ginormous and such an easy keeper compared to her but I wouldn't trade her for the world.

    My female gecko refused to eat and got extremely weak. I was ignorant in caring for my geckos at the time because they were kind of pushed on me so I didn't know anything about this. She ended up really sickly and lost a ton of weight, her tail got skinny, and I was under the impression that it was impaction. I was going to take her to the vet and put her in a really high place with a warm paper towel for her to soak on and my cat jumped up and got her. Later I found out she had eggs in her belly. It was terrible :/ luckily my male is still alive 7 years later and I have educated myself on properly taking care of him. He's my baby, I absolutely love him. I'm a (relatively) new gecko owner. I got my girl late October 2017. Thankfully since I was looking for as much info on leopards as I could (wasn't expecting to buy a leo, just happened, and had the stuff) I found your channel. You helped me learn some of the basic info I needed, the pet smart pamphlet is no help. And when it was around April or may 2018, she started eating less, but thanks to your channel, I learned it was normal behavior, and what other behaviors to expect. Though, I'll admit, i feed her more than everything says. I offer her food everyday, and if she eats it she does, if she doesn't she doesnt. I never leave the food in there with her, since I learned the bugs can hurt her. I honestly spoil her. Shes so thicc that I shouldn't have much stress if she stops eating. Of course if she doesn't eat for 3-5 days I do get worried. Even now, it's been 2 days since she ate, but she shed the other day, and it's the season, so thankfully I'm not super worried. Either way, thank you for making such an educational channel. She and I love your videos.

    I have one female gecko and once January comes around she stops eating. She only just started doing this last years. It is pretty stressful but I try not to worry too much. As long as she still looks healthy, drinking, and has a plump tail, she should be fine.

    I experience the same thing every Spring. It always stresses me out because I grew up with mammals and their care, and if a mammal stops eating, the results are faster and more dramatic. Its hard to keep my brain programmed in reptile mode, where its ok to go on a food strike for longer. But yeah, my leopard geckos go on a massive food strike during Spring season and I just generally monitor their weight to see if they're remaining consistent, all the while telling my anxiety to calm the hell down. Lol.
    My exotics vet recommended to me to have carnivore care on hand if I ever saw too drastic of a weight loss to feed through a syringe (not one with a needle, just a typical feeding one). Though definitely check with your exotics vet before you take certain actions like this. They advised I pop in for an appointment if I had a concern that might warrant its use.

    So, I'm a total beginner and planning on getting my first ever leopard gecko very soon. I've done loads of research (and binged loads of your videos :P) and spent time caring for other leopard geckos and feel pretty comfortable. The only thing that's really thrown me for a loop is whether I should get a male or a female. I don't really have a preference, but I'm wondering if getting a male might be easier as a beginner since they don't go through this whole process? I'm trying to make my first experience as stress free for me and the gecko as possible. Thank you!!

    One more question, is it okay to just use a heating mat without any substrate or is it unsafe to have their stomachs directly on the heating mat?

    • @fionashepley478
      @fionashepley478 5 лет назад

      The heat mat should be underneath the enclosure unless it’s wooden. You can have a thin layer of substrate covering it or you can expose the glass. As long as the heat mat is connected to a thermostat, the temperature is measured by a digital thermometer, and the tank is elevated for air flow.

    We have a 2 year + old female leopard gecko and she does not refuse food or make eggs, maybe its her young age? but she is ravenous for food all the time, she has never been nothing but a beast when she sees feeding insects her feeding response is too good, she always tries to hit my finger in her frenzy. :D IT has lessened with red pointed tweezer "training" but it hasnt gone away fully. But now she knows red tweezers mean food and no tweezers means that i just change water, clean the poop corner or spray the wetbox, but she still comes out to look if she would get something.

    My leopard gecko turns 10 in a couple months aaaaand has started developing eggs. We'd assumed (s)he was male up until now (we were told male when we got them at 3months old, but i know realise it was far too early to tell), though I'd had my suspicions for a couple years since she didn't have the obvious male pores/lumps. So glad she's decided to ovulate /s. We have tortoises that we breed who are currently in their laying season, so it's a bit like she was feeling left out! One of our tortoises is a different species and she's been laying eggs without the presence of males for a year now, so that's another to add to the list! Thank you for these videos, they've been a real help the last 24 hours while I've been googling how to deal with all this :')

    I own 4 female crested geckos. Two are house together (it’s a huge tank and they get along great) with all them, well except one cause she doesn’t like bugs, but the rest around this time of year they just want a lot of crickets or meal worms or anything living, and or something with bugs mixed into it.

    Hey can someone give me some advice? My lizard is stuck behind a dishwasher and has been in there for two days now. This dishwasher does not slide out and if we tried to get it out we would possibly hurt him. I put his tank on the ground and turned on the heat lamp to see if we could catch him basking. We also put a bunch of strawberries so he can smell them and find a way out. I was gonna spend some time with him and clean his tank when he had dropped on the floor and escaped to the dishwasher yesterday morning. Should I keep watch for him? He’s my best friend in the whole entire world and I’d do anything to get him back.

    I have a few questions.. My leopard gecko, who’s around 1 year old, is currently in ovulation.
    She’s very active and digging, as well as having the small red spot(s) on her belly. She has not interest in mealworms, wax worms or crickets and hasn’t eaten in a week; I still offer her food like I normally would. She drinks and licks up her calcium dust.
    Should I still / continue offer(ing) her food?
    How long can she go without food?
    How long will the ovulation last ( she started end of winter/ early spring )?
    She also enjoys wandering around my room - before she had no interest - is that her possibly looking for a mate? Or is it something else?
    Thanks, Love ya videos 💕💕
