My favourite Roxy song. It's just sublime. The siren at the beginning of the song has got to be one of the best intros ever. They were a force to be reckoned with & had so many hits in the uk in the '70s. Well worth looking into their back catalogue too if any younger viewers are seeing this for the first time & liking it. Brilliant band!
@@tommyrawlings3046 IMO it's their best album so I totally agree with you. It has a feeling all of its own. Tracks like 'Whirlwind', 'Sentimental Fool' & 'Could it happen to me?' could've all been successful hit singles.
As an American, I’ve always wondered why FM radio always seemed to avoid Roxy Music back in those days. Sure, Love Is The Drug was a minor hit, but it was a far cry from the kind of success they were having not only in the UK, but seemingly everywhere else in the Western world besides here. Even Canada embraced them a bit more than we did. From what I’ve gathered, they were every bit as big as Bowie was in the UK. Here, they were seen as barely even a ‘one hit wonder’. In 1975 when this came out, most of what was big was either early disco like “Fly, Robin Fly”, or pedestrian soft rock like Journey or Kansas. That was just what FM radio was pushing on us at the time. Not all of us were buying it, but it was nearly impossible to escape back then. It wasn’t like it is now, with all this easy access thanks to the internet. You had to really dig deep for the good stuff here. Find the record stores that stocked imports and carried the music magazines from across the pond, so you could find out what was going on. Unless you lived in one of the big coastal cities you were basically stumbling around in the dark, hoping to bump into something cool, new, and different. If you were as motivated as I was, eventually you’d find this stuff. I was never going to settle for crap like Foghat or Styx.
Bryan Ferry is such a cool elegant mysterious superb performer with great musicians that all gel together with such perfect sound all in sync! Such passion!
I don’t know about “disco”. More like blue-eyed funk/R&B, or as Bowie referred to his own album released at the same time, in the same style… “plastic soul”. This was kind of a forerunner to a lot of those early 80’s new wave funk sounds like Duran Duran, ABC, etc.
This was the perfect Era for ROXY MUSIC IN 1975 and it was right on the level of Bowe's YOUNG AMERICANS when the UK adopted that Blue Soul Sound!!! I thought it was over when BRIAN ENO left the band in 1973,but you can't deny ROXY MUSIC's inventiveness!!!

As far as late 70’s and early 80’s new wave bands were concerned, there probably wasn’t any other bigger influence than Roxy Music, and especially Bryan Ferry. I could see it with almost every single one of those bands in the very early days of MTV. Of course their influence was much more far reaching than just skinny tie bands, but nowhere else was it more obvious.

Saw Roxy play this tune live in Manchester (UK) in 1975 it was all about the brilliant musicianship / showmanship of Eddie Jobson and Bryan Ferry's excellent delivery and charisma. Roxy soon became mainstream after Jobson's departure as he migrated to his true calling in the Progressive Rock arena. Great version of this classic tune from Siren.
@@patrickhoulihan7210 Eddie Jobson is a world class composer in several genres, including film music, but only wrote one song for Roxy ("She Sells") and one for Bryan ("As The World Turns"). That aside, Jobson was Roxy's and Ferry's arranger and orchestrator, and seriously professionalized the Roxy sound after Eno, adding violin, cello, marimba, harpsichord and classical piano; a sonic and stylistic influence that is profoundly under recognized.

@801liveable Well, I'm not just a fan, I'm also a singer w/ sensitive hearing, so I pick up on how polished he sounds in the studio vs live; his difference is subtler than many who really need the studio, but there's a big difference between "good frontman" and "good singer". I never once doubted Ferry's ability to front RM --I prefer the ENO albums, & Ferry's Torryhood leaves a bad taste in my mouth, but he's clearly a good frontman. What he's not is a good singer.
Ruadhan 1334.Ii must disagree. Its impossible to generalise on ferry's voice. Ive heard him possibly do a dozen concerts live since the the late seventies .The power in his live voice in 1980 was remarkable. That said its changed over time to take on a much more qualitive timbre. For example friends who professionally sing and studied full time 20s and 30s period of music, say the way his timbre authentically captures that period is remarkable and he's not just cashing in compared to some others. They say he must really know his stuff. (and they wouldnt have known roxy at all) It's a very different sound to this but equally remarkable. But then has Ferry ever made a bad sound
@Ruadhán J McElroy you just sound silly, axe to grind? Don't try to rationalise it away by making a distinction between singer and front man, no one cares. His voice and delivery worked for the artist group he fronted. You don't need to justify that shit, or try to denigrate it on some totally irrelevant external "singer skill" scale which is even more irrelevant when discussing what is, after all, a rock group.
@801liveable No, Ferry and Eno had personal differences and artistic that split them up --but the first two RM records are superior to all subsequent RM records. My opinion doesn't need an age comparable to yours, as it's dependent on artistic merit alone, and as an artist, I'm absolutely allowed to voice it. Get a life. Seriously, honey.
