  • Making a strainer for under $15 to get the honey from our frames. An extractor is too expensive for the time being so we hacked a great strainer instead.
A project that can be done in about one-half hour. Thanks to FatBeeMan on RUclips for the method of decapping we'll use and to Kiwimana for the bucket idea.

save 2 dollars and use the bucket lid , drill a 3 inch hole in the middle . lids are made to stack buckets on top of each other

Great idea. Like I always say...I don't have the patent on good ideas. Thanks

i see a lot of people cut 5 or 6 buckets to make them taller when all they need to do is cut the center out of the lid .

Thanks for subscribing, watching, and commenting. Good luck with the bees. They are fascinating little devils for sure. How many colonies do you have and how have they overwintered? BTW If you buy an extractor get motorized right away. Easier use and more honey extracted vs manual crank. I use the 4/8 frame Vevo. I started with a two frame, then a four frame, then to the 4/8 electric. Save yourself the headaches and start electric. Here is a link to our Amazon Store. Go to the beekeeping section and look for the extractor. If you buy it from our store we get a small commission, actually if you use that link anytime we get a small commission. It helps keep the channel going and is greatly appreciated. But I'd really like to know how your colonies overwintered. We lost all of ours due to cold weather this year. Fabius, NY is not warm by any means in winter. Thanks again! www.amazon.com/shop/cleanslatefarm

Clean Slate Farm Thanks for the info I will check it out. I went into winter with 5 colonies and lost 3 of them I think the veroa mites got them I did treat them enough times before going into winter but I know now. I still have 2 colonies left I am hoping to be making some splits from them about the first week of May it has been cold here the last couple of days. I live in northern West Virginia on the pa border so we are still having some cold weather here.

Struggling Beekeeper Mark Cottrell It looks like ours absconded. When I opened the hives there were no bees at all. Starting this year with 2 new local nucs in a few weeks. Probably mid May up here in Fabius NY. We don’t treat and up until 2 years ago did okay. Some loss but workable.

Clean Slate Farm I wish you luck with your new Nucs I hope they do well for you. I treat my bees but I am hoping someday to find a way to not have to treat them I also have 8 swarm catchers out I am hoping to catch some feral bees this spring if I do I am going to try to introduce some of their genetics into my bees and see if that helps with the mite problem.

I like the idea and thanks for the video. I have a couple of questions. Did you fix the screen? How many holes in the bottom of the grey bucket? If the bottom is flat do you get quite a bit of honey left st the bottom?

The screen worked out fine. I did drill four more holes in the bottom to drain faster/bettr though. Not much honey gets left either. Thanks for watching. How many colonies do you have?

@@CleanSlateFarm I just have 3 as I only started out last year and I don't really want more, as I already have too much to do! So just doing what I need to keep one colony going for sure.

What did you do with the heat gun?

    • @CleanSlateFarm

I just heated the bottom of the grey bucket to make it a bit more conical so the honey can drain more completely.
